@k12tn Cage would argue that we don't have enough time on this earth to ignore and not appreciate the noise around us. It's all about the zen man. Taking in the earth around us and trying to soak up all there is. He stood in a room that was supposed to be completely silent and yet could still hear the inner workings of his body. for a musician that's intense/ knowing that nothing is ever quiet and trying to find a way to organize that sound..... Cage is amazing
Being very well versed in music from Romanesque to the present, I find Cage's works juvenile and trite. The emperor's clothes, if you will. You can buy in to him if you want- I have better things to do with the little amount of time we have on this earth... mg
the people laugh because as serious music, is a total stupidity... don´t let him fool ya... under the concept of concept you can create so much things... untrascendental music and thrash... that`s why nobody wants to write something like this anymore or nobody programs this his repertoire... studying for 20 years to "play" something like this? you know the real masters of music in XX century.. you know them... this could be just interesting as an oddity... no more...
I think people laugh because they weren't given a very clear explanation of what they were about to hear. What the host of the show said and by the way he said it, I think the audience was under the impression that this could be a comedy act or something.

I don't hear any discomfort or disrespect in the laughter. It sounded like the audience enjoyed being caught off-guard by the carefully composed sequence of meaningless events, even if they may have been unaware of how this fits into Cage's philosophy of composing. Cage's selection of props suggests that he composed this with a sense of humor, and he was smiling at the end of the performance.
Cage was one of the first musicians (...with Maynard Ferguson) to take part in Leary & Ginsberg`s psilocybin sessions in early 60`s.I don´t know what influence those experiences had in Cage´s music...

Si tan solo la gente no se riera... pero imagino q hasta el Gran Cagela hubiera hecho de ese gesto de agravio una parte de su música...

I think laughter is proportional to how much something is ahead or behind its time. This is definitely the first case.

@RyLay The host of the show didn't have his flock under control and should be berated for that.

Sheesh, stop being so damn reverent of the man's genius that you kill the spirit. The audience laughs because it was funny.
Western music/theatre/dance is so specific about controlling our audiences. When to clap, when to laugh, etc. It all becomes so stilted.

The audience was perfect; it's the comments here that don't get it.

The audience laughs because they were given permission to do so. Surely Cage expects it. Maybe even welcomes it.
