  • Like this loads. Visuals were very important in the70s but capturing it and videos and stuff were not yet developed. Low quality of this songs visuals still don't take away from the beauty of the audio. Great track from late gabriel Genesis.

  • please no background singing dude

  • after Peter I was done with Genesis too

  • Danke schön!

  • I wonder if Yes, Genesis, King Crimson or Pink Floyd ever shared the same bill.

  • Peter Gabriel is the sexiest thing that has ever graced the planet.

  • vietnam!

  • awesome song, band and era of music!

  • this is fantastic!

  • The most creative and magic progressive band in history.

  • Never forget Steve Hackett's contribution to Genesis. He held the candle for the progressive and more inventive material and once he departed, Genesis became more mainstream. Excellent though Phil, Mike and Tony were(and still are), Peter and Steve were the heart and soul of the Classic line-up.

  • is that PG singing??

  • @ThePinkguns Peter Gabriel, yes.

  • Fantastic, what a difference between Gabriel and Collins. Collins sound as a cheap Cat Stevens, while Gabriel's voice has a deep range and emotion. I love when Punk came, but have to admit that I always liked Gabriels singing (and Genesis with Gabriel)

  • Lumpy Bumpy

  • Genesis is a story of 2 bands. Genesis with PG was more experimental, theatrical, progressive. Genesis with Phil Collins gradually morphed into a pop song powerhouse. Both versions of the band are appealing in their own way. I personally prefer Peter Gabriel's voice and impact on the band much more than Phil Collins, fwiw.

  • Great post man! This brings me back fantastic memories. Unfortunatly Peter left the band and left us with ......."Phil Collins y sus muchachos". lol

Just kiding, until Wind & Wuthering things were quite acceptable but after......no comments.

  • Phils voice is nothing compared to Gabriel's voice

  • phil's voice is over powering peters even at this stage...................LOL!!! peter might be creative BUT his voice cant fuck with phil.

  • @rwk1983 Which drugs are you on man?

  • Hopefully??? ..There MUST BE a DVD made of the entire "Lamb" tour. Pretty please???

  • looking at this stuff makes you worry about the world today !!!

I educate my 8 yr old son continuosly on how the drum machine has ruined the world !!!!

    love,

    jc

anybody interested in purchasing a piece of the moon ? the REAL thing !!!

    ww w. lunarmeteoritestore.c om

  • Thanks bestcutester for remembering! People sometimes forget the beginnings of things...there was such a strong following for Genesis and the music I used to love the Strawbs and Gentle Giant because they seemed to me to be greatly influenced by this unique sound that was Genesis. Watching 2 drummers on stage in perfect rythum is a sight and sound to behold....they truly were unique and pioneers in music.

  • bighairbandgirl is right about that green laser show. I was in college the first time I saw them and I remember when that green laser came out everyone went crazy. It was the first concert I ever saw with lasers. Damn I 'm so grateful your post reminded me about it

  • Hopefully you can put together a DVD recreating entire The Lamb show someday with all these random clips out there!!!!!

  • I have heard so much about whether Phil or Pete is more tallented, but I must say that after listening to them for 30 years that there were many musicians in the band and they are ALL brilliant...I couldn't choose a fav song if I had to because they are all FABULOUS. I am merely grateful that folks upload these tunes so I can hear the ones I don't have anymore...Thanks Tommy

  • Great musicians, ALL of them. A pity they separate too early, but their music remained with lots of magic sounds and lirycs...

  • All I can say is..I was the ultimate Genesis Fan...FYI they were the first band in Canada to have a laser light show...yes it was a GREEN laser light from the middle of the stage that took over Maple Leaf Gardens...the ones that were there know what I am talking about...it changed everything about concerts...it just transcended the music...they totally took over!!! Ya Phil and Peter!!

  • Sure, Gabriel was a BIG and a important asset, simply amazing but Genesis is more than Gabriel. Well showned in the albums a trick of the tail and wind and wuthering. The whole line up together makes the sound so unique

  • yes... no Peter no party ;)

  • Everybody talks about Gabriel, Collins, Banks, and Hackett, but no one here has really acknowledged Rutherford. He was an awesome bassist, did backing vocals, and even did lead guitar in later incarnations of Genesis. He and Banks are the only constant founding members! GO RUTHERFORD!

  • @progrockcoffee I mean, seriously. The Return of the Giant Hogweed, anybody?

  • No Peter,NO Genesis

  • great voice.....

  • Peter was the John and Phil was the Paul of Genesis...This is a great tune

  • @Tod661 thats kind of stupid becose the beatles are not the point of references for every band and plus genesis whit gabriel will never be a commercial band

  • @unlikeanyotherhuman

LOL I thought the same once, but you can easily see that Genesis fans are probably the most elitist, divided and insulting fans in the history of rock music!

  • Foxtrot, Foxtrot, Foxtrot!

    Genesis' Magnum Opus.

  • Tommygun, Thanks for posting .

  • after Gabriel, Genesis ceased to exist for me

  • @woofer720 That's too bad. I enjoy both.

  • Does anyone dare to make a 3D version of the story of Rael?

  • collins is magnificent

  • I guess you had to be there to understand that Peter was theatre and Phil was the soul of Genesis. i mean, Peter played a tambourine and pHIL WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS of all time, Phil reluctantly took over vocals for the band after Peter ditched. Phil saved Genesis, plain and simple.

  • @whalestail1955

You sir, are one of the FEW INTELLIGENT Genesis fans to not only see but speak the TRUTH!

  • I must say, it felt like the end but the show was terrific and so was Genesis but only "old" songs could be somehow understood. The Lamb was quite complicated

  • damn, Pete was, like, skinny...what a voice.

  • PG sings without any force the flowing out like a wave .

  • GENIUS!

Peter Gabriel was, for a brief time period, the god of prog rock music.

  • I would of loved to see this concert in it's entirety. Awesome vid thanks for the upload.

  • yes tommygun, this is the real carpet crawlers, when phil sings it, uh, no just some sloppy remake.

  • Peter was soooooo much better than Phil, no disrespect, but Phil was a great drummer, Peter's voice .... ecstacy

  • this album should be made into an epic animated movie - such imagery - waiting to come to life

  • YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT!!!!

  • @mooners40 and what a sound track!

  • ....anyone out there live near the Runcorn area? Moonlit Nite play their first gig on saturday 13th march at The Norton Arms. Show starts 21:30. Be there!!

  • The fact that Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering were so good was testament to the true instrumental genius behind it all, Steve Hackett. Once he left, they were just another English pop band.

  • I think it is a good thing Peter left right after this because seriously what else was there left to accomplish? They had many epics and a rock opera. This short period of Genesis is considered to be the golden age it probably wouldn't be so revered had it not been short. However, I wish in the 90's when Genesis started sucking they would have got Peter back. They are without a doubt way to old to ever play a show again. I was born too late! I was born in '93!

  • @OdysseyIntoOblivion

some good points but I was born in 87' and think that phil did a great job after peter left look at trick of a tail and wind and wuthering two great albums with out peter...the entire discography of genesis is great beginning to end!

  • Peter wrote all the lyrics for the Lamb.Rutherford wanted to do something else, that the group had started without Pete, who's wife was having a difficult pregnancy..Peter liked the music, and went into another room to write. These are the best lyrics I've ever seen. And it made the group stand up to him, rather than shake his hand. And we all lost.

  • Bruford never played with Geneis when Peter was there. He only played during the 76 tour A Trick Of The Tail. Sorry...

  • I dedicate this song for all the people who live in Belgrano, Capital Federal, Argentina (Belgrano es un país), and all the places around it. Especially for all people who have studied at the Liceo 9 Santiago Derqui school.

  • WTF! Belgrano is not a country, Belgrano is a "barrio" between Nuñez and Palermo, in Capital Federal. Also, Belgrano was named after the Argentinian lawyer, soldier and politician Manuel Belgrano, who created Argentina's flag in february 1812

  • Look finderil, It' used to said so about that "barrio" in my country as a nice way to talk about it because it's one of the most important neighborhoods for all the cultural movement it used to have (it has to many schools, colleges, universities, etc., for example) and there are a good diversity of kind of people who live there, for so many reasons, and also I recognice that it's one of the most beautiful places that Argentina has, for everything I'm telling you. So, Belgrano es un país.

  • jajaja

  • YES, this is the real Carpet Crawlers. I love it!

  • It's not about knowledge... it's about song... perfect song...!!!!

  • BritIronRebel, The closest thing you would see to two drum sets on that tour was Phil's set-up, which until that point was the most elaborate set-up he used as Genesis' drummer, and Peter Gabriel's bass drum. Bill Brudford was deeply ensconced in King Crimson at the time.

I can't force you to believe this. If you do, great, if you don't, well, then I guess you'll have your point of view and I'll have the facts.

  • @knouraee, these are all easily verifiable facts. There was no need for Bruford before Gabriel left the band. Bruford wasn't hired untill the following year long after the Lamb tour was over, Pete had gone and "Trick" had been written, recorded and released on vinyl. So, he either was lucky enough to have seen the "Trick" tour with Bill (stunning, I saw it) or it was Peter's bass drum - (heh)

  • I believe the concert was just a few days before the LP was officially released or very shortly thereafter because when we went, all the songs were brand new to us....and we were already Genesis fans. As I said, I KNOW I saw 2 drummers and I was TOLD (no way of knowing unless he was introduced...which he wasn't) it was Bruford from a source I think would know.

I have never been to a post-Gabriel Genesis concert, so I know it wasn't later on.

  • Nice clear audio! Great to hear this...wow listen to that high-hat! go Phil!

  • Peter and Phil shared a great sense of humor.

  • Oh yeah, this video is just as lame as all of the other sorry splices floating around youtube. I'm not sure we'll ever see a real recording.

    Nice audio though.

  • Yeah, but old boy is referring to the song The LIGHT Lies Down, and NOT the lamb.

  • i believe it's "The Light DIES Down on Broadway"

  • @memetic07 yeah my bad it is dies not lies, its confusing lol but such a great play on words between the two songs.

  • Jeses, thanks for sharing, i have chills...

  • Outta sight man! Outta SIGHT!... Or should I say:

"You gotta get in to get out"?

  • I saw this tour in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. I have never seen such a concert's like, ever again. The way they used slides, almost as animated film, was fabulous. My friends extended a warm welcome to Genesis when they filled in for Focus at Case, and we were rewarded later and able to greet them again on return visits to the city, when they were more famous. Greetings from Paris, France.

  • I was at the same show in Cleveland. If I remember correctly, the 'Lamb' LP had either just been released or it was a few days before it's release. The concert was more like a musical-play.....equipment hidden and the acoustics and volume were perfect. Bill Bruford was the 2nd drummer I think.

We came up from Baldwin-Wallace in Berea...lol

  • You must have seen the first tour after Gabriel's departure. Bruford was on that tour before they got Chester. He wouldn't have been on tour when the Lamb album was just coming out. Phil was still "the drummer" at that point.

  • No....there were two drum kits. Collins and Bruford both on drums and Gabriel fronting the band.

  • Bruford never played with Genesis with PG singing. Bruford played from March 1976 until late summer/early autumn.

  • I know what I saw and I saw 2 drum kits with Collins on one and Gabriel doing vocals in Cleveland - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I was told that it was Bruford on the 2nd set of drums and have no reason not to believe the radio station (WMMS) that said it.

  • there's here in the youtube a version of this song led by PCollins. it's a very good and inspiring performance, more soft than PGabriel, not better only different

  • Genesis sin Peter no es lo mismo, esta canciòn me trae unos bonitos recuerdos Peter genial y ùnico!!!

  • peter is the heart and soul of genesis ...

  • @abangcupi Peter is great, but I also dig Steve & Mike's rifts, stuff like Steve Hackett's lead in The Cinema Show & stuff like that

  • @ abangcupi verissimo

  • Rad9000 is right. Peter was the head of Genesis. I see a interview with Collins there ask them for that album. He totally have no idea what is and told them: Ask P. Gabriel

  • Thank you soooo much for this.

i looked over years for an original live scene of this-my favorite song. thank you so much.

    Peter

  • Thanks AGAIN Tommygun!! This stuff will never get old!!! Genesis is sometimes imitated, but NEVER duplicated... Bloody shame that Phil has had to quit his percussion due to his back issues!!

  • poll..... T/F you are fried right now.

    True +1

  • Tommygun, do you know where I might see accuate transcriptions of Banks KB work? Especially interested in The Lamb...

I admire your access to footage and efforts on our behalf.

  • There is a paperback called "Great Keyboard Solos of Jazz and Pop" that has work from Tony Banks in it, it's available at Schott Music web site, there are also Youtube videos that show how to play some of Banks material. Good Luck!

  • Thank you for getting back to me so soon. Message read and understood; thank you!

  • @SWEENZtube I picked up a book in the 80's that was called the "Genesis Anthology". At first I thought it would be the typical "re-writes"... but in fact it had a lot of Banks work intact. Lamb, Mad Man Moon, and others. Lots of over-hand technique in lamb

  • @SWEENZtube If you get a sheet Music software program such as Midi Notate or Finale or Sibelius, the midi files for Genesis are in the main quite outstanding and can be turned into sheet Music.

  • I saw this tour..and like I said before Gabriel WAS Genesis.. Even Tony, Mike et all sounded so much better when they together..

  • Peter was a visionary and a creative mad-genius. Phil is a superior musician and also incredibly talented. Both deserve credit for creating artistic magic!

  • Phil is a drummer. Period. Don't forget that. Peter wrote this entire album and the rest of them had no idea what it was about. . better listen to the early albums and get your head together. . .

  • no man it was banks collins and rutherford who wrote must of the album bc gabriel was absent check it out on wikipedia

  • @elmaso80 them three wrote the majority of the music while gabriel wrote basically all the lyrics. I think the only song gabriel is not credited with writing the lyrics to is the light lies down on broadway.

  • @mdornbos27 the title is the LAMB (not light) lies down on broadway

  • @MightyZoltan2001 Sorry for the confusion, but I was referring to the song the light lies down on broadway. which I think Rutherford wrote. The rest of the lamb lies down on broadway Gabriel wrote the lyrics to.

  • They wrote a lot of the Music. Peter wrote All the lyrics. Most the band didn't even know what the album was about.

  • right... great album though one of the best

  • @elmaso80 I may be wrong but Peter wrote most of the lyrics? Tony and the boy's made most of the music.

  • @rodeopac

Phil was a good drummer and.... yeah.

    LOL

  • @rodeopac when peter left genesis, it really was a blessing, as peter continued to show his genious in a solo career that has been brilliant, and genesis turned out their best work with phil at the helm

  • @rodeopac don't forget about the rest of genesis. steve hackett, mike rutherford, and especially tony banks. helly banks probably put more in than anybody else musically. its not all about peter and phil, man.

  • Tommygun, Thank you for posting. You are correct. This is the real Rael version. Pre 1975 was the best of Genesis. Still waiting for a Gabriel/Hackett/Genesis reunion.

  • Phil Collins is one of the greatest drummers. And a capable singer. But of an outspoken "poppy" quality. I don't want to make a judgement, but there are just two categories: the artsy gabriel-genesis and the more straightforward collins-genesis. The first category is very intellectual, dark and mysterous. The second is more direct and takes itself less seriously. It is then a matter of preference. I mean: land of confusion is a funny song. Pop at its best. On the other hand a bit too clear cut.

  • It isn't about who is better. After Peter left, the band lost its creative spark. Just look at the solo work. I'll put Sledgehammer against Sususudio or Against all Odds any day!

  • I think Phill sounds really good on the newer versions of this song. He sounds alot like Gabriel. And as for comparing the work Genesis did after Gabriel left you need to look at the times. Gabriel also went to a more pop oriented sound just listen to Shock The Monkey. I dont think we will ever here the prog rock of the 70's again so let's just enjoy it and not campare it to what came after

  • 3:15- "and this in turn turns into an ugly, lumpy, bumpy humpy species of humanity. not totally dissimilar to our percussionist, phil collins, on my immediate left"

    Haha, didn't expect that:)

  • 1st of April 1975, i still recall the mellow feel of the entire thang. All of the audience were in a somewhat crazy but uplifted, cordial mood and me and my classmate enjoyed the given athmosphere to the fullest. Guess this concert changed my way of listening to pop tunes broadly, because when i came home i started to search my cassettte recordings for "good" and "bad" tracks and compiled them with the aid of my elder brother's huge tape recorder. Much to his hassle :)

  • Comment removed

  • I honestly cannot see what "Phil vs. Peter" adds to this discussion or has to do with this song.

The Carpet Crawlers is among the most mysterious and haunting songs of the rock era. I compare it to Court of the Crimson King and Whiter Shade of Pale, songs that torture while serving pleasure on a golden tray.

    This video is lovely.

  • Thanks for the focus Cameraman

  • I prefer Gabriel's voice over Collins' voice on all of these old classics, including this one. But, I do think Phil's voice mixed with Peter's for the chorus sounds tremendous. They work great together and are both slightly weaker without each other. Genesis was a collective. There is a version of this song live without Phil's voice in the background (maybe mic malfunction) and it sounds like something is missing. Peter and Phil=best band duo of all time IMO. Both are still considered megastars.

  • Genesis died after Peter this Lead Vocal is impossible for Collins & co. Long life for Peter

  • So my favourite Genesis albums are Foxtrot, the Lamb, and Wind and Wuthering.

  • wenn ich schwul wäre hätte ich mich schon 1972 in den meister verliebt..

  • gen with gabriel can break your heart-

    gen w/ot breaks your balls

  • To me - also an "older" guy like you moezmoe - there was no more Genesis after Peter Gabriel left. Just compare what they did before and after: Does anything after come anywhere close to The Lamb, Selling Enland, Foxtrott, etc??This is a completly different band and has also different fans. Sure it was not just Peter Gabriel to be credited for, but all the band, it was just magic.

  • Peter Gabriel Is sexy :3

  • Tommygun, THANK YOU for putting this up - simply awesome to see the "real" version after sifting through endless **** to find it.

  • I'd like to spank all of you, you silly young bucks. Your refernce is only in what you know...Genesis was Peter Gabriel...They took it to a commercial level after he left...most of us didn't like it

  • I love tis song so much. Evertime i have a goosskin.

  • well i wish they all stood together said and done but still the phil era was good. but one of the best eras in genesis believe it or not is when steve hackett was still in and peter left. around the time when the song :ripples: came out .

  • shame on you!!!

    how can ou say that!!

there's no one to compare with peter gabriel!!!

well maybe you can say that if you prefer more a comercial and pop version of this song (in that case you should listen to CARPET CRAWLERS 1999) than a sentimental and deep version of this song!

  • Does anyone have Carpet Crawlers and Cinama Show. With Peter Gabriel in full stage makeup and decent video quality?

  • Best fucking song ever...Coliins' interpretation not too bad neither...

  • Splendido...

  • why did Gabriel leave Genesis ???

  • he wanted some time as a solist

  • He left because he was getting too much attention for his costumes and flamboyant stage persona. There was too much focus on Gabriel and the theatrics rather than the music. He didn't want the spotlight in a band situation where everyone contributed. That and some personal problems with family and differences in opinion between him and the rest of the band were also factors.

  • there were several reasons, one of them was that he was the first of the band to be a father, and the other guys wanted more time than he could give to them, also he wanted some time for his solist career, and he was angry with phil i dont know why im not sure, but i think it was because in the concert phil didnt let peter sing, cause phil was singing in that time very loud, but im still not sure...

  • I also love Genesis with Peter (and many of his solo songs), but I think I understand those who say that Phil was better b/c Genesis TECHINICALLY sounded better at concerts later. I don't know why, but with Pete in studio versions they're perfect but on stage, sometimes, sound, kind of, 'amatourish'. But (before I get all those angry responses), to me, Genesis with Gabriel makes my top 3 favorite bands ever!

    Cheers

  • Listen to the hairy one in concert clips with the 'mockney' accent post gabriel. When he sings from the lamb by himself it sounds empty.

  • They did get tighter after Gabriel left. Could be because of the extra drummer. Maybe they acquired better equipment onstage. Maybe they practiced more to prove they could work without Gabriel.

I think all of the above had some effect.

  • Family reasons. His wife had a baby and the band was just breaking big. Listen to or read the lyrics of Gabriel's Solisbury Hill single.

  • I saw alot of good shit back in the day.. this was grand..

  • Live, this was the best

  • Hey man, great, they were very good.

  • i been posting this in about 20 videos, genesis died when gabriel after that they were no more "genesis" i would call it

    "phil collins and the others"

  • They were ok up to Wind and Wuthering. After that, eh. I could take them or leave them.

  • cmpletely agree

  • If you look at the whole body of work from ALL of these musicians it is amazing! You can't really define it by sales or popularity. They all are great and have made a very positive difference in this world.

  • In my opinion, this is the best band of the 70s, Gentle Giant, ELP, whutever. no one is as good as Peter G.

  • I think both eras are great. despite turning commercial, there really wasn't a band that sounds like 80's genesis either

  • you da man, tommygun. thanks for all the info!

  • Wind & Wuthering was the last great audible work of Genesis, from the wonderful Progressive scene. Anything else is merely pop music. Not saying there aren't interesting songs, but face it, they are all pop/commercial songs... nothing really special there. And as stated by others, Genesis without Peter Gabriel, is not Genesis at all.

  • you gotta get in, to get out :3

  • while all are genious its really Tony Banks that should be getting more credit

  • Sure, he is who supports the core structure of genesis music.

  • I agree wholly. Banks' work in this era is genius. People don't realize how central Banks' is not only to their sound, but to the compositional strength of the work. Genesis of this era was just an overwhelming barrage of talent. Almost too much for one stage. No weak links in the chain. And one more reason that this body of work is so enduring.

  • AMazing...one thing you gotta remember about this band back then..how YOUNG they were! How old was Gabriel when he did this?

  • Must have been around 24 he was 18 in '69

  • He LEFT genesis when he was about 25 - man that is some body of work to walk away from at that age

  • I agree. Genesis was nothing without Peter. Phil is a fabulous drummer and back up singer but...

Genesis is NOT Genesis without Peter Gabriel!!!!

  • Lot of love going on here for Mr Gabriele. I'm going to be controvertial and say I just don't get it. Phil collins absolutely nails it on vocals post Gabriele era...

  • It may not make sense to you. But if it did, it would be an absolute epiphany. You have to sit with it for awhile - put Foxtrot in heavy rotation. Sooner or later the light bulb will likely come on.

Yeah, I'm really not sure what you're talking about with Phil's vocals. I don't know what he nailed, but it certainly didn't nail Gabriel's vocal parts. They came out weak and whimpy. Gabriel delivered it with eloquence. Ironically Phil sang it like he didn't get it either.

  • Laughing... epiphany? Nosebleed more like. I guess it's a matter of choice. What you can't ignore is that Phil became a solo artist in his own right which totally eclipsed Gabriel's solo career - not even comparable. And as for the suggestion that Collin's took Genesis in a commercial direction? Well, there are two other band members as well as Phil and they're all still together. That says something. And it was their commercial success that probably saved them as a band.

  • You, are a "safe" listener. You don't understand the value of this music. Collins solo career "eclipsed" Gabriel's? What? Album sales? Even though Gabriel has sold a ton of records in his own right, I'm not talking about that race. Meaningless. Listen to Gabriel's 1982 album "Security" - you will hear something that doesn't strike you as innovative now. That's because everyone who made music then heard it and their jaws dropped. That sound BECAME the future. Collins was busy imitating Motown.

  • The poignant sarcastic comments in the film "American Psycho" sums up the direction Genesis went.

  • WOW abso amazing

  • I saw them in ' 74 when they did this show - Gabriel ran into a mirrrrrrror and became 2 Peter Gabriels at the end instant - it was freaky and exhilhirating all at once a phenomena - never seen a show like that b4...the best !!!

  • I saw the show in `75 at the Empire Pool at 13 years old. Big mans first ever rock concert!!!

  • Tommy does a great job! If you don't believe me, check out what he did on my song "It's Just The Energy".

  • i think that get films like this must be very difficult because genesis didn´t film a lot of shows if you can see there are very few videos of genesis (with peter gabriel) here in youtube but each one is excellent thaks to everyone that have uploaded videos of genesis classic formation

  • this song is creepy but i sort of like it.lol what are carpet crawlers anyways? lol this was made the year i was born lol
