This is a germohobes nightmare! When I make kombucha it takes hours because I wash, rinse, vinegar rinse, sanitize, purify & destill everything before starting the fermentation. My jaw dropped when you touched the SCOBYs. Hope you had fun though.
Kombucha tastes good, its been used since 2nd century B.C. in China for healing. The mushroom or SCoBY is a "Synergistic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast" not a mushroom, although looks that way floating on top. Because of this, it helps to balance gut bacteria. It kinda reminds me of a cross between beer and apple cider vin. The American Cancer Soc, hasn't accepted Vit C, D,A,B17,E, or K for helping with cancer. They stick with the good old drugs, chemo, rad & scalpel. Good Video BTW. : )
According to the American Cancer Society there is zero scientific evidence supporting health claims by Kombucha Tea. However there have been reports of serious side-effects, and even several deaths linked to Kombucha tea.
@justintrayford show me your sources. I just like the taste of kombucha and don't buy into the health benefits....interested in seeing your death stuff tho
@Skurvy2k I got the info from the ACS. It was a cut and paste job so what you see is from the ACS website. Like you I don't really buy into the "health" stuff either.
Tastes sweet with a slight apple vinger taste. I'm drinking it now for the first time. Nice. Trying to find the origins of Kombucha (in nature) and there seems to be a connection with Chaga a mushroom that grows on birch trees. It can be made into a tea and is much like Kombucha. Birch tree sap or syrup is one to look into.
I tried some of this stuff the other day. I'm a big tea drinker, but I couldn't down this stuff. Still, one of those things to cross off my life list, I guess.
It's really meant to be drunk as a tonic, one cup in the morning, one in the afternoon etc..Sometimes the store bought stuff is pretty harsh. Homemade can be made much milder.
omg yeah, that last comment.. dude.. I was just searching for 'kvass' recipies... I'm russian and that's what we have and this is meant to be the equivalent? hehe... it's so cool..
And i like system of a down, and it just reminded me of sugar... I haven't listened to them in a long time but i remembered, 'kombucha mushroom people sitting all around the world'
making kombucha isnt only for geeks! lol i make it and im not a geek haha. but i make it with 4 tea bags of organic black tea and like 2 cups of sugar i think. i cant handle the mushrooms though, they creap me out!
How do you actually start a batch without the actual kombuvha culture itself. I left mine to long and it went moldy so had to ditch it. How do you grow culture without an initial culture to start one off.
you really need a scoby (Symbiotic culture of Bacteria and Yeast) You can find them on Ebay for quite cheap. You can't just leave tea out and have it turn into Kombucha Tea. Its pretty good tasting stuff for a probiotic Drink!
Geeks Making Kombucha Tea? I'd name it 'UPRIGHT YOUNG FOLK MAKING KOMBUCHA TEA'. O what frolicsome youths and maids, O the joys of youth! But you didn't mention the brown suger requirement for the green tea!
DO NOT cover your kombucha with a lid. This suffocates it and allows condensation to form on surfaces where it will grow bacteria that would typically be suppressed by the culture.
people need to upload more clips like this. I prefer funnier stuff myself, check out dolphinhump. lostfrog . com , I laughed so hard I got kicked out of class! haha.

Does anyone know if we could use Green Tea?
tiffyj85 8 months ago
@tiffyj85 You're actually supposed to use Black, but White and Green are good substitutes. Never use fruit or herbal.
MachuLawl 7 months ago
How does the Kombucha tea taste? Even if you sugar it? Does it have a weird or bad after taste?
tiffyj85 8 months ago
@tiffyj85 Personally I love the smell of Kombucha. It has a tart taste, kinda like sour wine.

Can I use herbal (caffeine free) tea instead of white tea?
Doc says NO CAFFEINE! nice vid
ponkkaa 2 years ago
@ponkkaa The caffeine degrades during the process of fermentation. Use common black tea: Orange Pekoe and white sugar.

just go buy a bottle of unpasturized, unflavored kombucha and use it for starter, allow a couple weeks for the culture to grow

DO NOT cover your kombucha with a lid. This suffocates it and allows condensation to form on surfaces where it will grow bacteria that would typically be suppressed by the culture.
yndig 4 years ago
he put the lid on top of the cloth, because the cloth will absorb the condensation
however, there is no air able to get to the kombucha
so i do think it was a bad idea
the kombucha needs air
and the cloth stops condensation, gives it air, and stops fruit flies + mould
