  • Where is this in Japan? City, prefecture? Are there this many deer all over Japan or just this area?

  • @jedirifleman This spot is on Hokkaido island in Japan. The mainland has deer too. But this over population is only the issue of Hokkaido I think. Hokkaido is the northern part of Japan. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice Do you live near here so you can hunt often or do you only come to Hokkaido to hunt? How many deer are you allowed to harvest each year during deer season?

Thank you for such a fast response to my earlier questions. You have one of the best knife review channels on the internet so I have subscribed. Keep up the good work.

  • @jedirifleman I live on Hokkaido island and after 4 hour drive from my house there are lots of deer. Of course in one hour drive before my work in the morning I can get a deer. I hunt 60 days in 5 month hunting season. We have no limit for the number of deer hunted in a season although we have a rule one stag a day. So I got 50 stag and 15 doe last season. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice WOW! That is a very high sucess rate! Your freezer must be full. I wish you much sucess this coming season as well and look forward to more knife reviews from the field.

  • Wow so many deer! Now I understand your deer population problem.

  • for your safety when you are in the bear mountains, you should buy a JetScream whistle. its a very high-pitched whistle you keep on a keychain, and the high frequency hurts the bears ears. a bears hearing is more acute than dogs, so is his smell, thats why pepper spray also does damage, like you said. BE SAFE!!! thank you for the videos :)

  • @daddad77 Thank you for your advice!

  • @daddad77 Thats why Japanese bear shit smells like pepper spray and has JetScream whistles in it.

  • How about Peltonen M95?

  • @espaceblank I checked it out. It looks great. But the weight is much less than ESEE6 or RItter Becker. So it will not chop well. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice Yes M95 is not a chopper but available for batonning as well as ESEE6. You can carry folding saw for 6" trees and a bit longer camp knife for light chopping. I don't think that I can fight against bear with any knives, but length and thrusting performance, and lightweight would be very important at such time IMHO.

  • I could see you on T.V. here in U.S. like the history channel or National Geographic channel that's how much I love watching your videos. Your videos, for me , are some of the best on YouTube. Thank you.

  • Legal blade length limits..? Totalitarian much..

  • @Gungrave123 Japan is a kind of Totalitarian country actually. Liberty is less here. People don't like to take responsibility for anything, so we are obedient to the government. But the government itself is made of irresponsible and obedient people who don't like changes. So our Totalitarian attitude will not change easily.

  • I would love to see a video on how you convexed the Becker BK2. Thanks.

  • @lmsloan I have a video on it. Please take a look. By the way I carried some knives to woods yesterday and chopped down a dead tree. Then the convex BK2 took a couple of micro chipping while the others didn't. My convexing on this knife was very shallow and wrong. So I will put a deeper angled micro convex edge on it from now. Thank you!

  • stay safe my friend

  • great video. its being discussed on bladeforums

  • Are you going to put a convex edge on your ESEE-6?

I would like to know as I may do the same to mine.

    Love your videos!

Can't wait to ski Hokkaido powder again!

  • @Shutterguy This ESEE-6 has a full height flat primary bevel on 4.5mm thick stock. If I did full height convexing on it, the edge would go too sharp and weak. So I will sharpen the edge with waterstones at relatively shallow angle, and after that I will put a micro convex edge on it with compound loaded leather strops as I did on my ESEE4 knife. Thank you!

  • @virtuovice I should have clarified. I meant to say micro convex not full convex, a full convex on this knife would be dumb. I hope to see a video of your micro convex edge on the ESEE 6! Thanks again!

  • @Shutterguy I gave a micro convex edge on the Ritter Becker knife and tested it yesterday. The result was pretty good and I will upload a video about it today. And next I will do the same thing on my ESEE6 and take a video. Then please take a look. Thank you!

  • I enjoy your videos very much. please keep making them. great reviews

  • In bear country in Alaska you are REQUIRED to carry a firearm which makes much more sense to me!

  • @Nebulax123 I require guns all the year in the woods. Every year some people are killed by bears. A couple of weeks ago an edible plants gathering guy was killed by a bear.

  • @virtuevice a Kyley knife for bear should work really well and be strong.

  • How long were your old randle knives? would they be good to carry in case of bears?

  • @chrismcnie I already discarded my 7 inch Randall M-1 all purpose fighting knives. I am very sorry about it. Thanks.

  • @chrismcnie oh toy plan on killing a bear with a knife ??? I'll bet on the bear.

  • are there no natural predators for the deer? that much deer could cause ecological damage.

i don't understand the 6 inch limit. what is the justification i wonder? do they think there is some kind of magic number under which you can't kill a man with a knife? i can slice somebody's gut open with a 2 inch keychain blade if i really wanted to...but facing a bear, i want to use 9 inch blade or bigger!

  • @Urudrim In reality many knife guys own longer blades which are selling in Japanese market. When the police find a suspicious guy, they cannot arrest him just with suspicion. But if he has a 7 inch blade in his house, the police can arrest him for that reason. This law is such. The absolute illegal length seems to be 10 inches or so from the past judgment in the court. My gun right is covered by the same law with knives. So the violation of the knife law leads to the lost of my gun ownership.

  • @virtuovice it's hard for me to understand. in the country that invented the greatest swords known to man, no one is legally allowed to own one?

  • @Urudrim The sword martial arts sportsmen can own the Japanese swords. But they and the swords must be registered to the police. The art or ancient Japanese swords can be owned by the admirers after the registration. I once tried to register my 7 inch Randall knife to the police, but then they refused it. So if I had wanted to continue to own it, I would have had to own it illegally. The basic attitude of the police is for reducing the number of swords and knives in this country like guns.

  • @virtuovice okay, thanks for the information. it angers me when the government encroaches on your life like that. i see a similar trend here in the usa, at least in my state of michigan, the laws aren't as suffocating as they are in some of the other states...yet.

  • Whoa!!!!

    Hunter's paradise.

  • @TheBladebuster Yes, it is.

  • I hope u don't have to use the knives for defense my friend. But if u do, I hope u will be victorious! Thanks for the video, take care!

  • @knivesfishwild My mind is determined to give it my left arm and stab its heart with my right hand knife. Just imagination though...lol... Thank you!

  • @virtuovice I don't know Japanese, but there is a Chinese saying: 三十六计,走为上计。 I think that is the best way to deal with 熊 haha。But your fighting strategy is interesting, hehe. For me, I would throw my food and run... :D

  • @knivesfishwild Just kidding of course. Knife is needed because the bear can be an ambush predator, in which case, fighting is important because human may not be able to outrun it.

  • Hungry deer in over-population conditions can do much environmental damage! Wildlife authorities should extend the hunting season and encourage more Japanese to take up hunting as a sport.

  • @sae1095hc The government already extended the season from 4 months to 5 months 2 years ago. But the deer population is still rising at high speed. So they seem to extend it to 6 months from this coming season. October the first is the beginning and March the last is the ending. It will be a great season!!

  • what are the natural predators for your deer in Japan?

    great knife comparison

    thank you for the video

    -boyce

  • @mooseyou2 There are no efficient predators for deer in Japan. I once eye witnessed a bear attacked a deer outside the hunting season. But their population are far different. The bears will be 5,000, and the deer are 600,000 on this island. Thank you!

  • Great vid!!!! Too bad about Japan's 6 inch legal limit. I just received my Essee Junglas with 10 inch blade. It would be great to defend yourself against a bear as well as chopping and splitting wood.

  • @bobosantos1 I believe what you say is absolutely true. The blade length limitation here is a shame of me!

  • bears will track you because of this bacon man. If you intend to take food on a bear hunt, take it inside an opsak, and toiletries too, bears are inquisitives about any unknow smell. how you intend to hunt the bear? with traps? nice video btw

  • @androidandre I am understanding the bears have very good smelling capability instead of their weak eye power. I am always searching for a bear to hunt with a gun in the season. There must be lots of bears. But it must smell me out and get away faster than I spot it out. Some day I will get it. Thank you!

  • Nice video! I believe Rowan is simply the heat treat company, and not the maker of the knife. They are an excellent heat treatment company.

  • Why did you get the version with the sharpened spine?

  • @MrBladeDude I don't baton wood. I will stab a bear if I have a chance. So I need good stabbing and good chopping in a single package, therefore I picked up the clip point ESEE6. Thanks.

  • hi ..another great review... where did you purchase Esse 5 please ?

  • @zaarcon I forgot where I had got my ESEE5. But I believe The-Knife-Connection is one of the top stocking dealers of ESEE knives. Their ESEE corner is very interesting. Thanks.

  • All I can say is.. I hope you never encounter a bear.... Perhaps some smokey bacon in an Air-tight vaccum bag.. Then if a bear is coming at you, you can Rip open the bacon pack, and throw it towards the bear and start running very fast.

  • @knivesandstuff It must be a good idea perhaps! Thank you!

  • @virtuovice no, its not a good idea, bear , or most predators for that matter, like live fresh meat. they will completely ignore the jerky or bacon and keep coming straight towards you.

  • @Wyndstarthedruid Okay, I got it. Thank you!

  • @virtuovice honestly. and i have thought about this many times. as i live in north america. and go hiking often. best thing to do is. buy a cold steel bushman. i think its less than six inches. and if not. you can grind it down to a crappy edge or w.e and make it a spear. leave the sheath on while you walk and its just like a walking stick. if a bear charges at you. put a tree between it and you. a BIG tree, and back up. when he comes around the tree, STICK, and move, slash at the eyes! goodluck

  • virtuovice, may i ask please if u dont mind, if u now not eat deer or other animal for consuming because of the radiation from the fukushima accident?

I think you should move out from japan, but that is my opinion. I'm sorry if I abusive with question, but I need too and want to know. Thank u very much. If no asnwer I understand is ok, I always will love you :-)

Great review again and video, always great!

    Peace

  • @michelb08 The government decided that in 200km radius from the reactors it is banned to let cows eat grass on the ground. Pretty much radioactivity is falling around there every single day and accumulating on the ground. Fortunately my island is separated from the mainland where the reactors are standing, and 700 km away from there. So I can stay here safely. When the cooling water circulation system stop at nuclear reactors for any reason, It must go to the uranium rods melting down like ours.

  • @virtuovice Thank you very much for the reply. Be well and healthy my friend and keep up your awsome vids going, we love u all. I hope soon I maby can visit japan again, when I have time.

Btw, I have olso the ESEE6, I think its a little big for me but it's very good tool too. I rather bring the 4 with me when I go outdoors. But my favorite I must say is F1 Falkniven from sweden made in your country. Very gooe one these laminated san mai!

    Peace

  • @michelb08 Today my family and I will go and gather edible plants with some 6 inch knife as an anti-bear weapon and Fallkniven F1 as a cutting tool. Thank you!

  • @virtuovice Ah very nice. You will have a very nice time I believe so then. I wish u and family a very beautifull day with good gathering edible healthy food. I hope you won't have to use the esee6 against bear, because bear olso needs food :)

    Bye bye and thank u.

    Peace,love,understanding.

  • Keep it up ... soon you will be wearing Buck-skins and trapping beaver and bear.

You really are getting some serious knives. I like it ...

Maybe "Bushcraft" would appeal to you ... looks like plenty of woods to get lost in and you have alot of gear already. JUST A THOUGHT.

nice to see you out and about ...

ESSE 5 be the best knife in this line-up ... did the best.

  • Wako: I think with the limitations that you have on blade length you have chosen wisely.

  • @Nebulax123 I am kind of knife crazy and ordered the best thought knife for my purpose and for my county's law from custom Kyley cutlery. It will be modified from his Forrester7 knife at his Sell-Your-Knife website. The stock will be thickened to 5.5mm for my purpose. It will be available in a month or so. Thank you!

  • sounds like a challenge to kill a bear , i wish u the best of luck and nice blades by the way :)

  • Nice knives..I was wondering when you would get an esee 6...

Chestnut ridge knife shop do a great kydex sheaths for the 6

I have one and it is very nice, + the price is good

Have a good day mate !!

  • @stripymccatpuss I checked it out. They really have a great lineup of Kydex sheaths!! I bookmarked it. Thank you!

  • @virtuovice my pleasure .....I always love to tip you off on a good deal...

  • You have a blade length limit in Japan? Wow, that is crazy. What about Samurai swords and such the like? Or is it only for importing knives?

  • @TheEnglishRedneck45 The old or art knives are allowed to be owned regardless of their length after registration to the police. The sportsmen of the sword martial arts can own the long sword after the registration. But regular people can own up to 6 inch blades for outdoor purpose. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice I find that amazing. I for once feel lucky to be over here in the UK, where there is no limit on blade length, except of course for daily carry. I did not realise Japan had also become so controlling. Thank you for the information though, it is most interesting. Can you carry let's say a Spyderco Bug in public, or is any sort of sharp implement illegal?

  • @TheEnglishRedneck45 Even the Ladybug is illegal to carry in public. The minor offense law is applied to under 2 inch knives, and the gun and knife control law is applied to over 2 inch knives. In any way the knife EDC is totally illegal in Japan. Thanks.

  • ++++

  • good show

  • Great knives, expecially for stabbing!

    Congratulations!

You should also check KA-BAR D2 Extreme and KA-BAR Next Generation.

They are great fighting knives too and they can kill a bear, infact ''KA-BAR'' comes from ''kill a bear''!

  • @darknuke96 If the naming of the KaBar is what you say, of course I believe you, it is awesome!! Thank you!

  • @virtuovice Of course it's true, check out KA-BAR's website and look ''how KA-BAR got it's name'', it's very interesting!

  • @darknuke96 I just went to their company info page. There I found a very interesting picture where I found myself. Thank you!

  • Man, it's like a deer safari!
