Zappa always put on a great show. Never the same twice. A few friends and I saw him in LA, next night in Santa Barbara, on to the City, then over to Sacramento and finally up the hill into Reno. Different music at all of them.
Don't smoke that pot! Now what I want you to do is take this dirty sock, and yes I want you to roll it up in your highschool diploma and smoke it. Go ahead and smoke that education.
Who CARES if Frank did drugs or not? It's just like the rumor about Bowie and Jagger. Or the fact that Elton Jon is a queer. SO WHAT? It's their life. I just enjoy the music they produce. Ya know?
Monday, December 21st, His birthday, was officially Frank Zappa Day in Baltimore, Md, his hometown! Long live Frank Zappa, and may we all be "Moovin' to Montana soon!"
Oh now I can really see his influence on System of a Down. I'm pretty new to this guy, but immediately after I first heard him I noticed his influence on Weird Al, and immediately after hearing Captain Beefheart I could hear Zappa's influence, but I didn't quite hear the SoaD until Camarillo Brillo. interesting.
I love Zappa's playing! I was at a concert with a friend, and after a solo, he looked at me and said, "Was that intentional?" I assured him that since Frank had repeated the lines several times, it PROBABLY was!
It is faster, because Frank got bored of the song, which he had to play on every concert, because the people liked it. Frank tended to not like his own commercial hits. Only for the fact that his hits made him the money to do new unprofitable musical projects.
I don't know if it was necessarily that Frank was bored with the songs, I think that he constantly challenged himself with the meat and potatoes by playing them in a completely different key or at a psychotic tempo. Quite often he would turn to the band mid performance and completely change the register from what they had rehearsed just to keep everyone on their toes.
WOW....I WAS AT THIS SHOW! Thanks for bringing back the memories. Frank was an amazing guitarist and the reason I spent many many Halloween nights at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden. Remember that French Poodle??
But wasn't the Palladium great? I snuck into "the city" from Brooklyn when I was 13 to see Black Sabbath there, my first concert! I remember the balcony floor bouncing when we rocked out!
