The way Imperial era Russia used the Classical artistic forms she borrowed from the West is so striking. Nothing else compares to it. There is such boldness in color & in the juxtaposition of forms. The use is quite independent of the historical baggage that governs their use in the West. Almost a child like naivette in approach to these motiffs. & it is not just the richness of materials either. It has something to do w/ Russias derivation from Byzantium & seperation from the West.

I was here when the citys name was Leningrad...(and I just love Leningrad...sorry St. Petersburg today...)(Also coming with bus from the finnish side to the russian..it was like coming home..(in some way..)I love the area around Viborg(old finnish city-Viipuri)and Ladoga..(This coming-home-feeling I ONLY get also in one other country(except Finland)and that is country...(look my signature)(or maybe just the coming-home-feeling is that I have LITTLE russian blood in me(only very little though..)
