Why do old people need some many drugs? Because the natural state of our species to is live to about 35-40 and then die. Modern medicine has given us longevity. The draw-back is that we need medications to regular systems that would have already failed or begun to start failing by that time. Blood pressure, digestion, kidney function, liver function, etc.
I love Bill Maher but his ideas on medicine border on the retarded. The body is not a machine that would otherwise function perfectly were it not for bad food. It's an ad hoc system designed arbitrarily by natural forces. If some bad genetic function doesn't prevent us from reaching breeding age, it gets passed along to the next generation.
This part of his show is pretty serious. Our diets are horrible for us. The companies don't care about quality, or health. They only care about profit, just like any business.
McDonalds doesn't put a gun to your head and force you to eat their food. Why should they care about our health? I care about my own health. I don't give a damn about yours. So why should McDonalds. Stop pointing at "The Corporations" and blaming them. Take some responsibility for yourself.
I googled this just now, and found an article that discusses how women's shoe size in the US increased from a 5.5 in the 1940s to an 8 or 8.5 by the 1980s. The article also mentions that the average fashion model wears a size 9 or 10 (consistent with their statuesque height). This suggests that the relationship between our increasing rates of obesity and increasing shoe size is extremely noisy at best, and perhaps nonexistent. Why didn't Bill discuss BMI instead?
