for a non native, she does make some very great frybread.
but there are many different varieties and many recipes.
she is very informative but just remember dont stretch the dough too thin, cause if you do. It will make a very hard tortilla. Plus, if your dough is still dry, add more water.
Eat the frybread with slow cooked beans, or have it as a dessert with powder sugar and honey or fruit preserve. ^_^y
well, i wouldn't eat next day frybread, when you fry flour with milk and baking powder, the gluten in the starch turns rather tough when exposed to air and makes it somewhat hard to eat. So, I would just make fresh frybread. Usually frybread will stay tasty for a few hours, but the longer its exposed to air the hard it will become. Plus, fry bread is supposed to be eaten either hot or warm, never at room temp.
For some reason, when i added evrything and stirred the mix, it was too powdery.. And it would'nt turn to dough. Are you sure that you said the right amount of milk? Thanks for posting this recipe!
....That is true how everyone has different ways of making frybread...mine is a little different but I'm sure natives would agree that Blue Bird is the flour of choice!
hey err'1 i haven't had this type ov frybread but it looks pretty gud- i am part native n my mamma makes wut we call frybread- she mixes flour n water n puts it in a skillet like pancakes only it's much thicker- n we put butter on top n it tastes awesome
ya um ur were supposed to poke in the middle also that grease wasnt hot enough or the frybread well be to greasy! haha i crisco canola oil inside of the lard stuff hahai never seen sumone stretch frybread using a rolling pin gudstuff haha
I remember my aunts making fry bread and Indian taco's when I visited them but I havn't had any since I was 10 or 11, I loved it tho and was going to make an attempt at it tonight, this video helped me out =).
As great as Frybread is its even better with Lyed Or Dried Corn Soup. Im sure this Lady's is very good but here on Tyendinaga i think we have some of the Best! But HEY ITS ALL GOOD IF ITS MADE IN A GOOD WAY....OnenKiWahi
thank you for posting this. It made my mouth water!! I miss my frybread@ I lived in New Mexico for almost 6 months and I fell in love with it!! I tried to make it once for my family to try and well lets just say I started a fire and now my mom needs new cabinets above the stove. OUCH!! So I am banned from making frybread. Of course I told my bf and his family and they all got a laugh. So ppl plz use caution when heating up the grease.
Thanks for showing us how to make frybread!. I had it at the Navajo res. in New Mexico about 20 years ago and I loved it! They had made a buffalo mixture and put on it. Do you have a recipe for this? Or any other Navajo recipes? I would love to have them or see your videos if you could make some more!!! thanks and good luck!!!
you boob there'e no write or wrong way really just as long as it tastes good when your done, and hers looked just like my dads when she finished and we're navajo
hhmmmmm, i don't remember my grandmother, my mother and aunties using milk to make their frybread. they also use lard in the mix. but none the less a belagona woman making frybread is kinda neat.
Far out Kathryn, I am STARVING now! lol That recipe is similar to how I make 'damper', but we bake in oven-Not sure where I'd buy the grease, but am going to shop around now! Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed!

is the frybread still good the day after u make it? do u have to warm it up, or is it supposed to be eaten room temp.?
matoaka21 3 years ago 2
its still good the day after. just wrap it in a napkin and put in the microwave for about 30 sec and that will moisten it back up

you only poke a hole in it for luck and is mostly only done by fellow natives or dines

Actually, I am frying it in Crisco. That's my favorite solid vegetable shortning. It doesn't burn like a lot of other shortnings.
