The Lord of all my heart sings this song on the day, this is my beat to any and every movement I've made. Your vid is a good reflection of the time they had to live in and feel. fuck up the whole lot of ye and listen to the song!!! can ye not say how good the song and singer is instead of coming on here to talk absolute shite! it wont change anything.
@killyneary Hi mate, do you not think that when Michael Mc Connel penned this song, that he wanted people not only to listen and enjoy, but to reflect and discuss, and then actually do something. Or was he concerned that the middle classes should buy more CD`s. And a good day to yourself.
but you guys are not really stable. First, a "united Ireland" will be an economic drain the real Ireland in the south does not want.Second, some nut "real IRA" faction will torpedo any reasonable settlement before or after signing, via an atrocity bombing. Then the British Army has to come back like dad to clean the mess. It has been this way since the eighteenth century. The Arab analogy is in no way comparable. Please do not call us beaten curs over Viet Nam. topic of another day..
I guess provocation is a good thing if it gets people talking. No need to be abusive. I am an American and have nothing against Irish nationalism. I was suggesting that the Irish do not seem to have a talent for military organization. They fail at every rebellion, and then retreat to sad songs like this.
@PetroniusSatyricon69 we gave the world guerilla warfare, the same type that drove ye out of vietnam like beaten curs, the same type that will drive ye out of iraq and afghanistan,we fought one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen fo a thousand years against overwhelming odds and never gave up,think what you want yank but im proud of that and i know ye scum wouldnt have the balls or the heart to do it,what battle were ye ever the underdog ?? dont even say the war of independence
@gt2e Why exactly can an American not name our war of independence as an example in which we were the underdogs? Because if that is the case then you Irish should not be able to use your own war of independence as an example, and given that all the conflict you're referencing can be combined into one long conflict as you yourself have done, where exactly does that leave you? And as a simple point of fact, even without the revolutionary war, how about the War of 1812?
@asmodeon , The American "war of independence" was more a war between two sets of Europeans, fighting over the right to control a part of an empire. A war of secession, rather than independence. The native Americans were the victims of an invasion, and have yet to drive out their occupiers. Ireland, like many other places in the world, was invaded and occupied by the same "forces of the English Crown",.
@landsker Uh huh, and are The English/Scots and the Irish not both sets of Europeans? Were the vast majority of American colonists not born in the New World to parents born in the New World? My ancestors came from England in the 1640s and from Germany and the Netherlands in the 1830s, do I have no right to the land in which I was born and in which my fathers were born? I've never been to Staffordshire or Mecklenburg, but you seem to be suggesting that I belong there and not here.

@BrianCorrigan1 Ah, the US war machine is worn out and about to collapse...they are just realising that their warmongering has led them to be despised and abandoned in isolation. In fact they`re not even very good at war, 3-5 million in the armed forces, more ships and planes and armour than any other nation, and defeat looms large against a couple of thousand angry mountain men with rusty rifles and a few sticks of dynamite.
@PetroniusSatyricon69 What does talent in military organization have to do with being able to resist an oppressor? If talent for military organisation was all that was needed the Germans would have won both WW's. Obviously, there are other factors (politics, geography, economy etc). Anyway, what you call "failed rebellions" were not altogether fruitless. They all contributed to the changes of the 20th century. Even the songs helped because they kept the memory of the fight alive.
@FraAKM well put my friend as it says in the song. it was music that kept their spirits free so join us hand in hand i in my own opinion think these songs kept our brave vollunteers going during their worst times.
@PetroniusSatyricon69 A lot of the spirit associated with the fight for freedom comes from the memory of those who perished in the past. That is a huge driving force. The Irish fallen were never forgotten while those who fell for the Crown did so in vain.

@knumbknuts95 i know my history...why dont we have a march to commemorate the good friday agreement...instead of a paedophile that barricaded himself into a post office...daft prick
a Paedophile who barricaded himself in a post office... wow.
He helped lead an uprising against one of the most powerful Empires in the world. He was not a paedophile who barricaded himself in a post office, he was more of a man than you will ever be.
Freedom is not just a word that is to be tossed around the worlds air waves like a feather.Freedom is a way of life that eludes millions all over the globe!Take care ADonovan43
@TomBarry192I Well as a protestant bringing up all my children as catholics surrounded by protestant friends who accept us all the same How free do you want to be?
@TomBarry192I your so dramatic!this man never hurt or killed anyone your living in a time thats gone.we have relative peace now and a few terrorists wont bring back the old days, things were bad in the past but weve moved on your page says your 25...youve never even known any different, you werent even around when the proper troubles were on!.id guess your just another fella jumping on the bandwagon...typical friday night provo that follows what 80 year olds talk and argue about in pubs!:)
@royaldutch101 Ireland is still under British occupation, collaborationist police forces in any occupied country were targeted. Why dont you look for a lasting solution, british withdrawl. This has been going on for over 840 years. If anyone thinks it will stop while britain continues to keep Ireland sliced in two, they are living in a fanstasy land.
@TomBarry192I agreed get the fuck out, what the fuck business have you there english........... ,spanish, french portugese, dutch, murdering raping robbing bastards, history is littered with all this shit.and now its the fucking yanks.and israel.fuck em all, lots of love from ur welsh butt.
@CiaranBarclay1990 : No man i agree, its amazing how much we're come on. It would be really amazing for the Island to be recognised as one country. This comes from someone with no belief in any religion
@TomBarry192I What freedoms would you republicans grant to the 1 million protestants of Ulster? We like your music, we love your craic but we have a culture too and its a british irish one. Its only a screwed up culture to those who dont possess it! What freedoms would a united Ireland bring us? Your issue is not with the English, its the protestant Irish and were not going anywhere, remember our battle cry is no surrender! We all have to get along mate, you will have to live with that.
t palestine was governed by uk after ww1 by mandate from league of nations , which evolved into the un. the mandate ended in 1948 and palestine was to be a triiparte state, with arab, christian and jewish citizens. in 1948 war, several jewish paramilitary groups attacked both the british and arabs and siezed the largest part of palestine.palestinians were then restricted to a much smaller part of their land. that history, plus rthe siezure of further land is reason for todays conflict
why cant people detatch political implications from music, americans have a lot to say but they shoud take more of an interest in their own county and leave the rest of the planet alone!
stop being pawns. i listen to tunes i like, regardless of the 'political implications'. There will always be those in power playing on the emotions of the rest of us. We're all in the same boat, so as soon as we all realise that we might start sharing the life jackets.
IPAC (Irish Political Affairs Committee). This has a nice ring to it. Even Irish Americans 3 generations removed from Ireland have strong, strong feelings for Eire.. Why don't The Irish(in Ireland) harness this love to thier own benefit? If they could get 10 percent to write a letter or call a congressman that would be 3.6 million letters or calls...Congress would not, could not ignore those numbers...Isn't is worth a try?
Why don't the Irish follow the lead of the Pro-Isreal Jews in America? Lobby our Congress(via the 36million Americans of Irish descent) to pressure England out of Northern Ireland. The Jews have lobbied our leaders for support of Isreal with outstanding success! A recent poll of Congressmen showed that the lobby groups they listen to the most, and follow the most are 1. The AARP(American Association of Retired People) and 2. AIPAC( American Isreali Political Affairs Committee).
that's probably because - 1. America created the Isreali state so they wouldn't have to take the demon jew into their own home.
And 2. the hollywood giants from MGM finance the Government. Your Democracy is bought and paid for by money men. Why your so proud of it is beyond me. Not dissing the American citizen, just curious how you can be so blind to your Governments manipulations?
don't take the comment on the 'demon jew' out of context please. It was a comment on the attitude of the American government of the time and not a personal slight of the jewish people
actually it wasn't the America that created the state of Israel...not even close. It was a UN mandate that took the land from the UK. who had the land since the end of WWI. and before that it was a part of the ottoman empire.

Markesaurus, or whatever your nick is? Whover asked Irish people our opinion, 800 years of genocide from the base wars of the 1100s, through the reformation and genocide of the middle ages, then when we were nearly wiped out through the famine, they still ruled us, Ireland is not British, Jesus made a sea there for a reason, how many more lifes must be lost before the thick maggie loving brits get the message?
You say may our Ireland be free and then you say "up the "RA" we will only be free when there are no factions tearng us apart. no matter their private agendas, none of these people ever asked me if I wanted men women or children murdered so we can "Be free" I would have slammed the door in their hateful faces, I will make my own way in this world. please dont believe you are on sone sanctified mission from the irish people, its just not so.

The song and its meaning are as true today as 500 years ago, sadly we just swopped one form of tyranny for another albeit more subtle. ''The Sow Turns Her Arse On Her Own Litter'' you only have to walk the streets to see how we have been raped Financially, raped Culture wise, disinfranschised politically and soon to become the Arran Islands (no disrespect to the Arran Islanders) of this european Federal State, OH to be the 51st State of the good old USA.
The irish are all over the world but every beast loves his native land ..Granted there are some spongers that want the best of both countries but not the true irish person..The person that wrote the song was 16 at the time and witnessed first hand the awful things the british did...
@stelvans Yeh, no one other that the 1.6 million who said they have Irish in the 2006 census! And thats expected to rise substantially in the next census... Looks like your mind is still enslaved by the English language (post) colonialism. I feel sorry for you!
@spraoi111 Ok make it easy, why would it be translated for the minority ie less than 2% of the Country, not to mention the rest of the world who would also have no interest. Nothing againt people who want to keep up their traditions but why should the rest of the Country be bothered. Welsh, Irish, Scottish are all the same until you want something from the English.
@stelvans I'd like to hear a version of this song in my native language thats all and if you find that offensive or annoying then youre a bigot and a racist. Anyway your last statement is pathetic and not to mention your figures are wrong and don't reflect the opinions of the majority of people in Ireland.
@stelvans 70 million? I think your confused with another country? Or else you could be assuming Ireland a part of Britain? If thats the figure you refer to then english native speakers are a minority- Just ask your mates in the BNP ha ha
@stelvans That spraoi should ignore your ignorant ramblings. Its obvious that you have never fought for anything in your life and have always taken the easy path and quite frankly you strike me as a serial bed wetter. You should take some advice from me and purchase yourself an electric blanket.
@fitzrightin Your probably right i am happy with what I've got and don't see the point in dragging up the past and how things used to be so much better.
People like you are constantley looking to take the Great out of Great Britan accept what you have and make the best of it instead of whinging about everybody else good or bad fortune. I'm certain you have patches on your jumpers elbows, knit, hug trees and are part of CND rent a hippy.
@spraoi111: Spraoi, I have NOTHING against the Irish language, but I have to agree with the point of view that this works better in English - but not from that git's POV - I simply don't think the Irish translation would match the tune.
@NobleKorhedron It works great in English! Think it would also work well in Irsh...Could be good to have versions of a lot of our loved songs on a CD, maybe as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, I know plenty of people who'd enjoy it, if there were musicans to sing and record them, which i doubt would be a problem either.
@NobleKorhedron you would have to change some of the lines alright but it would work and to be honest I think it would sound better as gaeilge, but thats just me I think everything sound better as gaeilge
I am an east belfast man,and was brought up on so many falsehoods about IRELAND,I HAVE NEVER BEEN AN ORANGEMAN OR A LOYALIST,I GUESS I HAD PARENTS WHO JUST WANTED A QUIET LIFE??
Ireland is in my heart and my soul, all of its people lets move forward and appreciate each others culture.
May,be our destiny is to be together???And yes the BRITS SHOULD GIVE AN APOLOGY TO THE EARLIER DAYS OF THE CONFLICT.
@karmapeach God bless u for ur honesty, I wish all people from your side of the divide had the same views. At the end of the day we are all Irish, even if a loyalist goes anywhere outside Ireland he would be considered a Paddy like the rest of us
Where are you now when we need you..great song, remembering great people..This generation needs to see a revolution, the bastards in the dail need to be run out of it, once again we need to give Ireland back to the people.
This lyrical song was written following the killing of 14 people in Derry on Bloody Sunday. I deem it a measured response to an ugly act by the state. Christy is a champion of justice for Ireland and the world. He is a worthy successor to the mantle of Luke Kelly, and Sinead O'Connor and Damien Dempsey also keep that flame burning. The Irish have great cause for grievance, that their singers draw attention to oppression where they see it is a testament to their connection to the world.
@Percy1916 Well said, what you have just written is so true, and there is no one like the Irish for composing very emotional and very beautiful songs that demonstrate the grief and pain of the oppression and hurt they have suffered in the past.
@josparkes1 Thanks friend. We've had 900 years of oppression and we still turn its ugliness into art. What humbles me is our artists are so keenly attuned to the oppressed in other parts of the world, and keep their flames burning. Christy sings about suffering people in Central and South America, and South Africa, and Damien Dempsey laments the plight of native American people. Part of me is glad I don't feel injustice as deeply as Sinead does; but what she condemns needs to be condemned.
@Percy1916 Well said, that is so true, this song is a song of truth and pathos and consequently very beautiful and sad as well as a history of Ireland !
Thank you for your lovely message, by the way the messages keep disappearing, on my inbox.
@Percy1916 Sorry to be a Youtube Nurd... but the the song predated "Bloody Sunday" it was written by Mickey MacConnell in 1965 and was to do with the patrition of our country looking North towards the state of Northern Ireland
@malachy1847 I stand corrected Malachy, I was misinformed by the fiddler who taught me it. Thanks for putting me right - I'm pleased the song is older than I'd thought, it means more people have heard it.
i really like christie moore's version of this,...i myself was going to do my own version last sunday to be sure,...but then i took an arrow to the knee,...

AIPAC( American Isreali Political Affairs Committee).
ptrckcwly 1 year ago
@ptrckcwly
that's probably because - 1.

@stelvans Yeh, no one other that the 1.6 million who said they have Irish in the 2006 census! And thats expected to rise substantially in the next census... Looks like your mind is still enslaved by the English language (post) colonialism. I feel sorry for you!
spraoi111 1 year ago
@spraoi111 Ok make it easy, why would it be translated for the minority ie less than 2% of the Country, not to mention the rest of the world who would also have no interest. Nothing againt people who want to keep up their traditions but why should the rest of the Country be bothered. Welsh, Irish, Scottish are all the same until you want something from the English.
stelvans 1 year ago
@stelvans I'd like to hear a version of this song in my native language thats all and if you find that offensive or annoying then youre a bigot and a racist. Anyway your last statement is pathetic and not to mention your figures are wrong and don't reflect the opinions of the majority of people in Ireland.
spraoi111 1 year ago
@spraoi111
stelvans 1 year ago
@stelvans No problem call it a stand off. My grip is the minority fractions always seem to over come the majority.

Pity you did not know me as you would find your racist jibe funny xx
stelvans 1 year ago
@stelvans 70 million? I think your confused with another country? Or else you could be assuming Ireland a part of Britain? If thats the figure you refer to then english native speakers are a minority- Just ask your mates in the BNP ha ha

@stelvans That spraoi should ignore your ignorant ramblings. Its obvious that you have never fought for anything in your life and have always taken the easy path and quite frankly you strike me as a serial bed wetter. You should take some advice from me and purchase yourself an electric blanket.

stelvans 1 year ago
@spraoi111: Spraoi, I have NOTHING against the Irish language, but I have to agree with the point of view that this works better in English - but not from that git's POV - I simply don't think the Irish translation would match the tune.
NobleKorhedron 1 year ago
@NobleKorhedron It works great in English! Think it would also work well in Irsh...Could be good to have versions of a lot of our loved songs on a CD, maybe as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, I know plenty of people who'd enjoy it, if there were musicans to sing and record them, which i doubt would be a problem either.
spraoi111 1 year ago
@NobleKorhedron The national anthem was written in english then translated and works ok

Percy1916 1 year ago
@Percy1916 Well said, what you have just written is so true, and there is no one like the Irish for composing very emotional and very beautiful songs that demonstrate the grief and pain of the oppression and hurt they have suffered in the past.
Your comment is very very good indeed !
josparkes1 1 year ago
@josparkes1 Thanks friend. We've had 900 years of oppression and we still turn its ugliness into art. What humbles me is our artists are so keenly attuned to the oppressed in other parts of the world, and keep their flames burning. Christy sings about suffering people in Central and South America, and South Africa, and Damien Dempsey laments the plight of native American people. Part of me is glad I don't feel injustice as deeply as Sinead does; but what she condemns needs to be condemned.
Percy1916 1 year ago
@Percy1916 Well said, that is so true, this song is a song of truth and pathos and consequently very beautiful and sad as well as a history of Ireland !
Thank you for your lovely message, by the way the messages keep disappearing, on my inbox.
