you can't compare f1 in the 50's and 60's to todays f1, they are totally different. I think Hamilton and Alonso would have given Fangio and moss a challenge just like they would have done if they were racing in modern times.
Maybe it's me but I still don't find Alonso , Hamilton and button great drivers. Alonso won two times the world championship with luck, Raikkonen en Schumi were better. Hamilton won the championship whilst Massa should've won 3 races more. and Button had a advantage at the beginning of the season while Vettel was much quicker at the end.
@erwinruys That's the funniest thing I've heard for a long time. Go on then if you can give me 100 F1 drivers that are BETTER than both Hamilton and Alonso then I'll eat my dogs.
@MrMangoFace22 And here's why almost every driver that was in 1950, 1960 , 1970 in the top 10 of the championship is better than the drivers today. Cars were more difficult to drive in the golden ages.
@erwinruys I respect your opinion. I wouldn't class it by top 100. I would class it in who has shined in race and qualifying. But also who has had most wins and success. You said that modern drivers aren't as good, but you did praise Kimi and Schu. Also it is easy to forget those like Jean Alesi, who never had the cars or luck to show how good they truly were.
@nickJod1234 Yes but let me remind you of a interview by Lewis Hamilton did on TopGear. When he was driving in the McLaren of Senna. The conclusion was, that people in those most have been crazy, that is for me the proof that today racing car drivers never really could've hold themselves in the old days. Don't get me wrong I love every F1 season and race or whatever. But I would never classify the modern racers as better then the golden oldies.
@nickJod1234 Not that they "old ones" are always better. But that it was more difficult back then for the racing driver. These days it is "less" difficult (still bleeding difficult) for a driver. Therefore the drivers back then are better. When the "true racer" Hamilton (not a fan) says this, it has become clear to me that old drivers must be better.
@nickJod1234 I really don't think so as today you've got all these technical benefits that the old cars didn't have. As for safety, most racing car drivers could push themselves as it has become less dangerous. The older ones did everything without any safety. In the 1950's the racing drivers were driving with a t-shirt and a little head protection. The barriers were trees or spectators. Today they have all sorts of safety measures.
@erwinruys Good point. Another thing is that back in the 1950's they raced on the actual Nurburgring, which is, well unbelievable. So much respect to those. Ok what do you think of racers like Prost, compared to Fangio?
@nickJod1234 Hmm that's a difficult one actually. Both had tremendous pace, were extremely intelligent and were multiple world champions. Fangio was like 20 years older then Prost when he had his F1 debut. But he still drove everybody to shreds. Allright that's is a bit to much. So Fangio must have been a very strong driver. He also had the talent to go to teams where the car was the best of the field. So I would go for Fangio. Especially when you know he had competition of Moss, Ascari etc.
@nickJod1234 I think it's better to compare like the 1970's to 1980's as those years had a more flowing character then the 1950's to 1960's. 50's began with a engine in the front but were going to the back and middle at the end with Black Jack's Brabham. The cars were becoming lighter and smaller. And in 68 wings became a issue something it never was until that point. 70's and 80's had ground effect and the turbo cars as a real development. Which stuck around for a long time.
@erwinruys So how about in 2004 when Schumacher had by far the best car in the field, or Hakkinen in 1998, Hill in 96, Mansell in 92, Senna in 88, Andretti in 77 and numerous others who had the advantage of having the best car in the field?

@erwinruys I think it is you, Lewis and Fernando (as much as I dislike him) ARE the best drivers in the field. Fact.

@MrMangoFace22 That says something about the modern f1 field. Alonso , Hamilton shouldn't even be in the top 100 of the best F1 drivers.

@erwinruys But maybe the old guys would never be as quick in modern cars, just like this years drivers would struggle in old cars?

Button always had it. He must have overtaken more in 2009 than any other driver.

@godsumbrella
are you serious? I hope you have the season review and watched every race because no, he did not do more overtaking than any other driver.
