  • A Prancing Flautist . . . can't do it. The instrumental portion of this song is pretty bad-ass though. Barrymore Barlow is Amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • I have every tull album , this one is un playable because i played it to death!

  • Thanks whoever you are. May you be Blessed.

  • Brilliant song, brilliant album, even the cover is brilliant.

  • @Jorsalfar

Not as good as Stand Up !

That album always jumps out as a great cover!

  • great

  • Everyone here delivers so hard.

Great band. Drummer and Bass Player can be proud.

  • Ah, just listen to the nonsensical lyrics, that's what this song is about. Listen to Ian laugh as he sings.

This is my favorite Tull song simply because of the repeat lyrics (into song) and the evolution of style into what became mainstream Tull.

Ah, I love Tull till this day!

  • jethro is all magic just the best

  • I always thought he said "So I brought a lady... for your entertainment" at the beginning...

  • What are you on? An atom, a speck of semen???? Listen to the song for god,s sake! And why do we always have top comments from some kid. We have had to put up with great music for years. Lol.

  • I.A. is king

  • i am an atom and i also have a likening for jethro tull

  • I am a speck of semen and I love jethro tull!

  • Barrimore Barlows drumming and Ian Andersons arrangements- Match made in heaven!

  • @TheSpo69

    Yep!

Barriemore Barlow is also the greatest name ever.

  • @glenclosed Agreed!

  • awesome drums. Jethro tull is the best.

  • just seen Ian Anderson and his band at Manchester Cathedral, playing live for charity, great night, brill Ian, thanks for a great night:)

  • Saw Tull live in concert many times. The live performances were almost note for note from the studio albums. The aqaulung tour from early 70's at Boston Gardens was jaw dropping! They played for 3 hours with standing ovations for early sets. Anderson said,"sit down and relax cause you are going to be here awhile".

  • @plasma3211 I hear ya on that one, was there myself for that, and many more from that era!

  • Great! Just Great.

  • Does Ian admit to being a "Women Hater?"

This is what the song is about, right? Introspection?

    Martin is a guitar master.

  • @modelleg He's not a woman-hater. It was one of the flaws of some audience members observed by the minstrel. This song is more or less about realizing that we are no different from anyone.

  • @modelleg If Ian is capable of introspection I will have to re-evaluate all his lyrics. I love his sound but he strikes me as rather sel-righteously smug in criticizing alll points of view but his own - I'll re-listen with your thoughts in mind.

  • and he threw away the looking glass and saw his face in everyone...

    rock n' roll forever...

  • Music from my childhood... I remember leaping around the sitting-room...lol!

    How wonderful!

  • Martin Barre - really underrated!

  • @QMPhilosophe Under rated? Sure. But, as Ronnie James Dio said (many times), "you're only as good as the people that you play with"...I think that Anderson and Barre both understood this fully. Wonderful, beautiful music.

  • I was so high on the previous albums that I did not like this album at all when it came out. I thought it was lacking and did not have the kick azz sounds of the previous albums. I did like this song and I really like "Baker Street Muse" aside from these two songs I thought Minstrel in theGallery a real let down. Maybe its just me..... :)

  • hi MrJackwitz i agree completly with your words...Ian Anderson is indeed musical genius...but do u also agree that Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy was a genius in his own way....great songs like King's call...all forgotten songs...

  • @10wink10

YES! I would buy you a beer right now if this was real life!! Ian and Phil are both (in my own opinion) two of the best frontmen/songwriters ever. period. Phil was an Irishman, Ian is a Scot, not that that's important...

  • Martin Barre!!!

  • 15 in 1975 saw him in Cinti Ohio Amazing

  • M A R T I N B A R R E ! !

  • @superazteca1 why diss on metallica what did they do to you that would cause you to say that? if you dont like them keep it to yourself. keep the comments about jethro tull. who is also really good

  • Ian Anderson is a genius who surrounded himself with master musicians. He wrote all the lyrics and music except Aqualung which was written by his wife. The 60s and 70's Rock music will go down in history as the most creative and most influential of the 20th century period. Period!! just sayin ;-)

  • @MrJackwitz Actually his wife was a photographer that brought him photos of 'old bums'...vagrants in other words, of which Ian constructed songs( for Aqualung). His wife got a song credit mostly because of the photos she contributed, from my understanding. Anyway it comes out, it's a classic and most perfect album as well as song.

  • Loads of emotion. never fails to uplift the spirit.

  • The acoustic ballad is Ian's, and the main body of the song, but the inventiveness of Martin Barre lights the transition on fire, while Barrie Barlow pounds the crap out of that beat........

     Similar to Martin's " Conundrum"

  • I enjoy the first part, a wonderful contrast in styles and like many Tull songs, "sets the table for the main course" Purely a matter of personal tastes.

  • @CorvusDreams I would not know this Jethro tull song if it wasn't for heavy progressive part.. I think of viking heros just standing around talking with severed heads held by the hair in hand from pictures i often see in history books..

  • better without the 2 minutes intro

  • Great songs from my youth, better than all the crap today

  • i'm only 5 years old but i still listen to classic music from 2003 sometimes as far back as 2000

  • @magneticjesus Umm... I woudlnt really classify 2003 or 200 as "classic" sheesh... and you type really well for a 5 year old.

  • @magneticjesus 2003- 2000 is still in mainstream rock music. anything from the 60's to the mid to late 80's would classify as the main core of classic rock music. In my oppinion the best music that was ever created.

  • @patmann123 we might say that "classic rock" includes primarily classically trained, talented musicians, not just old "classics"... but music with great musicianship. like this!

  • At 2;27, OH MY GAWD! He kicks the fucking door in! Again!

  • Jethro tull is one of the best ever !!!!

  • Jethro Tull the most unrated ever.

  • Ian Anderson is a Timelord.

  • this still might be one of the greatest compositions ever.

    Thank you.

  • Score one for Ian and Martin.

  • This song is about the artist creating a satire of his audience and then realizing it is but a satire of himself.

  • I'm a seventeen year old girl, and I acquired the taste for this band on my own, it is pure genius!

  • @PurplePerry15 "Acquired the Taste"? So you're a fan of Gentle Giant too?

    Marry me.

  • The sound of a good life.

  • good music knows no age............

  • I was tripping on acid with friends, around 1980, and we all listened to Tull, YES, Gentle Giant...Anyway, the line, "he threw away his looking glass and he saw his face in everyone..." just kept repeating like a mantra in my mind even if Tull wasn't playing. The whole notion of foregoing the approval seeking image in the looking glass and seeing "god", "brahman", the "self" in everyone was overwhelming.

(the preceeding is in no way advocating nor degrading the use of LSD)

  • 2:14 That's where shit gets REAL!!!! HOLY FUCK!!!!

  • Last night we saw The Moody Blues. Pure magic.

  • I am 15 and I bought this album yesterday. HUGE Tull fan!

  • @LedGratefulAllmanBro Same here. c:

  • great drumwork. Thank you Mr.Barlow

  • once you polarize the pumpkin eaters...you have won.

  • Lyrically theres nobody to touch Ian Anderson - its a song about his ambivalent attitude towards his audience - lines like 'he pacified the nappy suffering, infant bleating one line jokers and 'freshly day-glo'd factory cheaters, salaried and collar scrubbing' just don't come out of nowhere. Like Neil Peart says on some Rush documentary 'you want the listener to feel like care has been taken with the lyrics' - The fact that they are impossible to sing for anybody else makes it even more amazing

  • I saw them last month and damn, Ian and Martin can still play like muthalickers!

  • i only like the part from 2:18 and on. but i fucking love that part so much its totally worth it to listen to the intro first, it actually gives it more anticipation. i mainly like jethro tull for the instrument work they do which is amazing. im not really into hearing Ian Anderson sing with an acoustic all by himself but when the band comes in with electric guitar and the powerful drums its amazing to me. they really know how to rock out and i think the flute goes perfect with it all

  • e pensar que essa e so uma faixa do album. antologico.

  • i've said before ,commenting JT vds that Ian Anderson is will always remain unique in his genre.

  • Lol im 13 and into jethro tull

  • arguably the finest songwriter(s) in rock history

  • @sheltech12, I totally agree. Musically more sophisticated than many contemporary classical composers (I've been a pro musician in my life and he's written tunes I have trouble figuring out time signatures for), and I think one of the greatest unsung poets of the 20th C.

  • @PlayHorse3 Hey, don't feel bad - Ian can't figure out the time signatures either - and that's part of what makes this music so awesome.

How in the world Martin, Barry and Jeffrey, and David could "get" what Ian wanted is one of the great mysteries, but it sure did turn out good for a few years in the early to mid-seventies.

  • "My Lord and Lady......we have tutors,we happened upon these stroving players who provide....."

  • Ian Anderson - bard, jester, entertainer, he is the ultimate minstrel.

  • It's just fathers and their sons watching these videos. Isn't that great.

  • @batmanofni and mothers and daughters- and sons. My brood loves Tull.

  • why the fuck does some ragnarok shit come up when I type in "minstrel"?

  • Been into Jethro Tull before I was a teenager, I just turned 48

It's still as good now as it was back in tha day!!

  • @cyberteque -just short of 50 and I agree in spades with your post!

  • I love this song, my dad introduced me to this band, I am 12 now and leaned about them one year ago, when I learned about Traffic and King Crimson.

  • Excellent song of Jethro Tull, but listen close to the drum of Barriemore Barlow. Amazing.

  • @1961vampire Heck yea man, very wicked march!

  • im 15 listen to the good old heavy metal etc

but jethro tull rules ! saw them last year live here in germany

  • @noobpower96 !st concert I ever saw. I ws 15 in 1975 saw him in Cincinnati, Ohio He jumped off a HUGE stack O f Marshalls I've been truly blessed saw Led zepplin for $15 a ticket

  • @kellyM4760 lol...seen them over here in dear old england back in the early 80's....i recall i wore a red cloak and jodhphurs of deep crimson....my butler got pissed and totally embarrassed me..the cnt.

  • When I was younger?? Never mind!! This is still one of MY most favourite Tull songs. The genius of Jethro Tull is lost on the youth of today; Hell, it was lost on a lot of people in their time. Brilliant forward thinking sound, meaningful and intelligent lyrics... Definitely a GEM when it comes to music.

  • @dandrea694eva I think their Genius was only not paid attention to mostly from critics they are one of the biggest selling bands in the entire world.

  • Haha this used to be my favoritte Tull song when I was younger.

  • King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Traffic are what makes music great :)

  • Absolutely Love Jethro Tull. One of my favorite bands. They're so unique and they just plain rock.

  • Jethro Tull freakin' rocks!

  • LOL I have been listening to Jethro Tull since I was about 6 years old when my dad started introducing me into music. Im 22 now and still LOVE Jethro Tull.

  • i think this is my favorite Tull...

  • just saw him play at the scottish rite theatre. im 16 :)

  • love this songs guitar style and sound.

  • I was fortunate enough to see Tull's Songs From the Wood tour as a youth. I consider myself equally as fortunate to receive all of the kind feedback from my original comment about my 15 year old son. Thank you all !!

  • I'm 14 and JT's my favourite band and has been for a long time!

  • AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!!

  • Yeah Ive been a Tull fan since oh, 2001ish when I was a freshman in high school. It sure made me hate the crap they put on the radio station. God the music "Fly 92.5" couldn't hold a candle to this stuff. A ton of my friends liked Jethro Tull, its true; GOOD MUSIC NEVER DIES!

  • Your bad when you can rocK!!! a flute

  • Sincerely; Thank you for all the Quality Tull postings.

  • Believe it or not is the first time that I listen to the whole version. Well, this song has essentially two parts, and I'm more familiar with the second one. I saw Tull when I was about 16 years old in Tampa, and I don't think they played this song in that concert.

    Thanks!

  • This is the first time I hear this band...Im 14 and yeah I like them too :)

  • this is gold

  • thanks for giving us such of this great music.. Tull 70's music.. poetry, music and great energy at the same time

  • Everything in the Universe has a reason to be. Well, Jethro Tull exist to show how high music can take our soul.

  • Would you believe my 15 year old son is into Tull? I'm one proud papa!

  • @thefeepy yeah you should be proud :D

  • thats good taste

  • thats good taste ..this is complex music ...not many people will appreciate this kind of talent

  • @thefeepy I'm into it as well, I'm turning 18 in a few weeks. Great band. I've never heard someone use a flute to such great effect, either.

  • @CaptainHollyShort You have great taste. I saw them perform during The Song From the Wood tour. I was around 18 then.

  • @thefeepy I´m 16 and like it too :P

  • @patrikrush Good taste, my friend.

  • @thefeepy I believe it. I've been into Tull since I was that age...I'm 22 now and love to discover more and more deep stuff from Tull and other artists of the day. Also let's us be cool and aloof because we listen to something the rest of the people are age don't.

  • @mjwenzel Hi, well, I'm a 53 year old woman who has listened to Tull since the beginning, way before you were born. It's just wonderful to know that Ian's music lives on! God bless.

  • @thefeepy I've been into them since I was 15.

  • @thefeepy I'm 15 years old boy and I'm into Tull too, and in many other groups.

  • @thefeepy Im 15 and love Tull! Been to see them in concert twice - fantastic! So much better than music being pumped out these days!

  • @thefeepy

You SHOULD be proud! Tull is a mix of everything -- rock, folk, medieval. Good for you for raising a good one!

  • @thefeepy your son beat me. I got into JT 1 year ago when I was 16 :p

  • @thefeepy Congratulations to you both! There's a number of people these days that took at the music of our day with fresh eyes and listen with unbattered ears.. :P

  • @thefeepy : i can relate, my son came home @ 14 and announced he had just been at a tull concert ...(i was angry initially as this was wop(without permission). but.... then i was proud!!!! tho his revieue stated that ian was "korny" when he said he would now "play backwards" and turned his back to the crowd. LMAO!!!

  • @thefeepy I was around that age when I borrowed the first vinyls by Tull from my Dad. I call that good education. ;-)

  • @thefeepy That's great! I hope you go to concerts together. That's really special :)

  • @jethrodassam I took him to his first concert last year. We saw Zappa Plays Zappa ( a brilliant performance by Dweezil Zappa's band ) and Dream Theater in August. In November we had the privilege of seeing Steely Dan at , my son's request. The ticket price was outrageous ( $400 ) , but the memories are priceless.

  • @thefeepy Sounds like you have a great and close relationship with your son. You're a lucky man. Yes, that was a lot of money for a concert, but if the memories are that great, it's well worth it.

  • @jethrodassam He is a great guy and a lot of fun to be with.

  • @thefeepy Who can blame him? Tull has waaay more actual talent than at least 95% of the crap that the mainstream music industry tries passing off on us today. Ian Anderson would destroy Justin Beiber, 50 Cent, Black Eyed Piss, Usher, Lady Gag Me, Katy Perry, and their ilk just with one flute solo.

  • @Pbirv Well put, my brother.

  • @Pbirv seriously? you typed all that out, naming pawn after pawn... to prove a point about a flute? tull reduced to being better than beiber because of a flute.

  • @Noddy93 Not just the flute. Tull could simply stand on the stage doing nothing and still blow away the aforementioned crap. The point I was making that each individual member of Tull has waaaayyy more talent than all of today's crap "artists" put together ever will.

  • @Pbirv Exactly, is too sad to someone like me, who is just an adolecent, it's nasty to meet people with my same age that like pure shit commercial music and ignore this awesome classics.

  • @AnEndlessPain Total agreement there. Of course there's always one or two you could turn on to real music.

  • @Pbirv Amen to that!!

  • @thefeepy Im 18 and i can't get enough Jethro Tull. Good to know there are others :D

  • @TheScapAttack /highfive. I second that! Im 15 too though

  • and my son. He grew to love it in his teens.Hes 26 now

  • @thefeepy that is awesome. gotta raise 'em in the faith.

  • @grokgov Keepin' the faith, my Brother.

  • @thefeepy I've been into Tull since I was 13 and I am 20 now :-P.

  • @thefeepy I'm 16 years old fan too :)

  • @thefeepy Yeah, I can believe it, because I'm a 14 year old who is into Tull, Thin Lizzie, Kansas, Journey, and Guns n' Roses.

  • @thefeepy

Have a vast collection of 70s and 80s rock albums. Consider this JT offering one of the very finest!!

  • @thefeepy He's probably into TOOL but you misunderstood. LoL... Just kidding..

  • @01AcidTrash10 Actually, I'm the one into Tool. He calls it dreadful angry people music. Go figure. He says he wishes that he had lived in the 60's. He even had me buy tickets for The Moody Blues this June. The kid has no angst. I have it all. thank god.Lol.

  • @thefeepy That's awesome! I am 18 myself and into Tull as well.

  • @thefeepy

I am in my early 20's. My father introduced me to Tull and many other classics. Speaking on behalf of the younger generation, I salute you for giving us the gift of good music!!

  • @thefeepy well im only 21 and tull are one o my favorite bands, handed down from my grandfather :)

  • @thefeepy It's good to hear the past is influencing our future generations...

  • @thefeepy

You've made a good job, papa, no doubt!

  • @thefeepy awesome man, there is some hope for the future

  • @thefeepy I'm fifteen and like them :D

  • 3:58

  • If I rem correctly, after the 'Punk' revolution (in U.S. '77), Anderson 'fired' the original band. From that point on, it has been 'Anderson's' gig, with revolving cast.

  • @rjpancerniCAUSA Not really. Martin Barre and Barry Barlow were still with the band in '77.

  • @sandro28grizz Cool. Did not know that. A buddy went to a 'late seventies' Tull concert (that is what I based my post on).

    Thank you :)

  • I think each of the GREAT rock groups has an album in which they play at their best. (which is not necessarily their best album). THIS is the album in which Jethro Tull play at their best...and it's one of their best albums too!

  • I can't stop listening to this!

  • pull up ya breeks, and down a few ales..god bless the tull.

  • This was my first Tull song ever heard, when I was such a young kid. And it blew me away and made me Tull fan for life. My theory about Tull not being "that" popular it´s because the lack of live material in their best period. The 70´s of course. Would you imagine how much respect and recognition would Tull get if the world had an official live performance of them between the 1971-1975 period...

  • "...and he threw away his looking glass, and saw his face in everyone." how awesome is that?

  • @tecwolfen pretty awesome!

  • Ich habe gestern Suppe gegessen ...

  • @Frodolino53

das tut nicvts zur sache, gar nichts.
