Those flying manta lizards are fun to battle with. They dive bomb at you and then twirl a bit to dodge your shots.

The only thing bad about Unreal Gold is that, the characters, like the enemies in the game were a little too blurry. They were not very well animated. Turok 2 had better looking characters that were better textured, and much better animated. Waterfall effects were kind of corny in the beginning, and you had no splash effect when you fired into water. The enemy AI was fantastic for it's time, dodging your fire, even retreating to minimize damage with little health.

I only recently got this game. Heh. It has gorgeous graphics for it's time, & my opinion still does, of course nothing special that the XBox 360, PS3 can't do, even the Wii, but for it's time, it was breakthrough graphics. Only Quake II had comparable graphics. The textures didn't really blur when you came up close to them. Textures were pretty nice, used extensive dynamic lighting. Multiplayer shows no decline in graphical detail either. Historic game.

Man I wish Epic would stop milking Gears and just get back to their franchise that made them big and doesn't have a million glitches everywhere, like chainsawing the air and invisible covers

Let's just hope when the Unreal engine 4 comes out the first game to use it will be Unreal 3 or Unreal Tournament 4 and not Gears 4

This is easily the best PC FPS in history. You start out with Doom and Dark Forces, great games but limited by the technolgy. Then you get slighty better with Quake which then leads onto the likes of Jedi Knight and Quake II, getting even better. Then finally, at the end of the 90's, all the good bits from those games i just said are put together to create this master piece. After Unreal, we get the crap games like Jedi Outcast, Doom III, Unreal 2, Quake 4. Unreal is the peak.

@nooblet911 Truly a nooblet, what do you play now? Cock of duty or Halo?? If you think about it, this is the first true 3d video game in the history of it's past. Quake and Doom were 50% sprite animated. This is the start of the FPS genre, and will always be the best. But hey, if it is boring to a n00blet than that is fine with me. At least I will bury it with the classics where it belongs.

@nooblet911 Quake 1 is based 90% on death-match in a coop environment, which makes the story SHIT. Even the story it self is shit, there is no fucking story. And another reason why unreal is better is because Unreal 1 Death-match kills Quake1-3 death-match. I just walked onto quake 3 arena one day and raped everyone because I was trained by the magnificent Unreal Gold legends. Unreal has better graphics, and game play. And I am not a noob, for I have been playing games since the Saturn.

@nooblet911 In fact, Unreal was the first video game to compete online with the mouse. As far as I see it, quake 1 was extremely boring trying to run around shooting with your arrow keys. I don't get your point why unreal sucks, the multiplayer on unreal is wider and it certainly makes deathmatch revolutionary. Quake 3 Arena is the second game I would say that makes deathmatch revolutionary. But quake 1-2 suck so bad I wish they were never real.

GOG now has Unreal Gold for 10 bucks fully patched and ready to go with windows xp, etc.. I just picked up HOMM3 and Arcanum for $6 each. They are starting to get some really good games, and no stupid drm protection or whatever it is.

Unreal, I have so many good memories of that game. Awesome graphics back in that time, wonderful gameplay with a great feeling of exploration and mystery.

I agree with Intecrisis' post, they should really remake this game. I can't remember a single other game which gave me the same gameplay experience as Unreal did.

Likewise, I play every few weeks on Sunday (hLk is still together, and their are usually a few guys in the servers Sundays). Just not enough people on in general anymore. Still, one of the better games out there today even in my opinion.

UNREAL was a great First Person Shooter, but when it was released people were already used to QUAKE 2 so it paled in comparison. Unreal tournament revived the series and now Unreal truly lives on in Gears of War.
