jesus, Bruce was always an amazing singer but unlike most others singers he actually gets better over time... wish it was the same with rob halford. Those 2 have always been my favorite singers. PRIEST and the BEAST
i have seen many videos of maiden in 86 87 playing caught somewhere in time from the "somewhere on tour", but i keep asking to myself, why they dont sound good in the video?
it starts with the intro of the album, sounds just right, and when the time to play comes, they dont sound as good as the intro just played
well, because the somewhere in time album had a lot of extra effects, such as chorus and delay, and sometimes its hard adding all that for live performances
when i am playing this song on guitar i also use chorused sound and sounds pretty awesome almost same as the somewhere in time album i really love the sound of this album
and also. somewhere in time is a pretty hard song to play, specially live. Because the galloping on the guitar is quiet fast specially if you also have to be moving around for stage prescence and that sort of stuff.
You said it. It's 86-87. That's about the time where the world started to use the technology of digital music. Maiden used guitar synthesizers and so. Try to listen to Stranger in a Strange Land from Somewhere on Tour, and try to find a recording of Stranger in a Strange Land from the Ed Hunter tour which was in 1999 and you'll notice yourself :)
@metaljorgo Because those were recorded with very old VCR cameras, an the quality sucks, what do you expect, DVD sound quality from a tape taken 23 years ago?
This song is very underrated. But something that's horribly underrated as well is Dave Murray's solo. And Adrian's solo is as awesome as people say that it is. :D
Yes, from the World Slavery tour and onwards he struggled with his voice. The tour dates were just too close in between. He didn't get enough time to rest and recuperate between each gig unfortunately. And the rock n' roll lifestyle (being young and all that back in the 80s) probably didn't help either. But now, he's fucking great.. But he did reach the higher notes, during the NOTB and PoM tours tho.
@ChillenMcGrillen93 its not that at all, once you get older your voice keeps maturing, so his voice is at its best now because its matured to the fullest.
@magikmike210 Bruce had singings lessons, 'cus he learned a new style of singing, if he would've kept singing the way he did during the 80's, with the dist and stuff, I don't think he would be able to hit the notes he does today!
@ChillenMcGrillen93 I kinda see you point but he def sounds to me like he has a cold in this video, He could sing better than this back them ive seen so many maiden concerts both on video and live
@ChillenMcGrillen93 I agree. When Bruce came back to Maiden in '99 on the Ed Hunter tour, I was like 'Woa! He's rebalanced his voice and is hitting notes live that he only used to hit in the studio'. He still maintains it over 10 years later. It seems he's learned to "belt" in a way that doesn't damage his voice. I asked him in an AOL chat around the time of Brave New World how he sings better than ever... he didn't give me a straight answer. Oh well. lol
@ChillenMcGrillen93 I think the problem was a combination of running around onstage too much, plus inadequate monitors. If you can't hear yourself properly onstage, you're singing louder than you should, and end up not being able to deliver. I think these days, he uses ear monitors, so he can hear himself better onstage and therefore can sing better.
@InvisibleYetVisible Well maybe, but the World Slavery tour took quite a toll on him. Thats why he sounded they way he did on live after death. If you listen to the rock in rio, he sounds freaking amazing.
Great video all things considered, BTW did anyone notice Bruces blooper at 4:40? He should've said "make you an offer you cant refuse" Thats a few times Ive seen him get the semi chorus wrong, and in the same place too, lol
They should release this. I thought there were no professionally filmed performances from this tour. If they ever continue their "history"-thing (early days, somewhere back in time), they should make a dvd box featuring 12 wasted years, maiden england and concerts from the 86-89 tours, like this one. They did it with powerslave/LAD.. why not!? If they do that after the new record, I'll see the tour, and then I'll stop going to metal concerts, cause that would just be un-top-able. SBIT was great!
Yeah, I saw this year's tour, and it was epic. Best heavy-show I'll ever see, I think. I'm not suprised they're gonna make a new record. I've heard they're gonna play more songs from more recent years, but what do I know.. I wish they could've played this after the encore in their next tour (like they did with moonchild this year), cause there are SO many people out there who wanna hear this again. But Alex the Great or Back in the Village would be fantastic to hear anyway. We'll have to see..
Oh, and I know there won't be an 86-89-tour again (still I find it odd that they dubbed a "powerslave-style"-tour containing only 2 SIT and 3 SSOASS songs "Somewhere back in time"). I hope we get to hear some of the rare songs from those tours again, though, like Stranger in a Strange land and Seventh Son. For their history-tours, there is no way to top the last one, but perhaps they could include some of the forgotten classics from the late 80's in upcoming tours anyway.
If there is a god, please make these guys play this song during their Maiden England Tour 2012!

Nah, he was like that through most of the 80's, listen to the Live after death video and you'll hear it!
He's a much better singer nowadays, I believe he got singing lessons some time after he left Maiden!

@ChillenMcGrillen93 also singers' voice has to last the whole tour, so they usually don't try to get the perfection they can get in studio.

I can promise you, there will be no tour with songs from 86-89!
They had that this year!
But the DVD I bet will come out!
And after the album tour, Bruce said on a radio interview they would play a tour with songs that haven't been in a tour so far!
So maybe then we'll get to hear Alex the great, Only the good die young, Lonelines, Duellist or Back in the village!?
