  • audio (BASS!!!) starts at 1:25

  • if I were him I'd be bored as hell on that song, but you can still hear his little licks to enertain himself. The greatest electric bassist ever.

  • sound at 1:25

  • Anyone else notice the "Ox Cam" caption on the bottom right of the screen?

  • He did not "play" the bass. He danced on it with his fingers and made the bass the ballroom floor. He kicked ASS!! BTW, he has the same birthday as me, but he was 19 years older.

  • There will never be another like him. He's simply amazing.

  • Cliff is an aweful bassist compared to Thunder Fingers. Just listen that that lovely bass.

  • John Entwistle is the best bass guitarist ever. there will never be another with his talent. if you think his playing is good on Baba o' Riley. listen to won't get fooled again isolated bass and you'll really be amazed.

  • It gets fun at about the 5:00 mark

  • Ya know, when they finally show John that once in a great while, PEOPLE SHOULD STOP WALKING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA!!

  • One of my favorite parts of my DVD!!! Long live the OX!!

  • You could have just cut out the shitty minute and a half of darkness. A monkey can do that with Windows Movie Maker.

And why is it that after these days Entwistlle always played with the gain up to 11? It made everything sound like shit.

  • @Socioistic

This is what they had to deal with when they got the stuff out of the vault. Why would you want to mess with that? And what made it sound like SHIT?

  • doooooo

    d-d-ddooo doooo

    da-di-dum-da-di-dum dooooo

    dooo doooo

  • like 1:39

  • Until 1:25 you get to watch John alone in the dark

  • 3:28 he starts being absolutely fantastic

  • You misunderstand me, John Entwistle was a self stated "bass guitarist", which in my interpretation means he used a lot of top end. Paul, Jack, and all those great bassists in that era were very skilled, but they were never bass guitarists. Jack, using fretless basses and almost funk lines didnt cross into a "lead" sound, Paul was the first to make bass lines that were melodic and time keeping, still a bassist, Jamerson used in depth and thumping bass lines, John had superior sound and technique.

  • @RedRicky590 you simply don't know what you are talking about. What do you mean, they weren't bass guitarists? James Jamerson was the model that all players followed, including John Entwistle (look up some of his interviews). Jack Bruce truly created the "lead bass" sound, and he didn't start to use the fretless until the 80's. You are just too enamored of Entwistle to recognize anyone else's contributions.

  • @shomanca Excuse me? I dont know what im talking about? You continually misunderstand at every turn! Now, before you call me ignorant, or a Entwistle fan boy, may i acknowledge a few things. I appreciate ALL talent, and i have scoured the works of almost every noteable bassist of the past sixty years. If you knew what YOU were talking about, you would know Entwistle copied riffs from actual guitarists, usually country riffs. Please dont patronize me for my own opinions and throw dirt.

  • @RedRicky590 I have understood everything that you have been saying - but it's just mostly ill-informed or irrelevant. Why would John Enteistle copy riffs from guitar players (country or otherwise) - couldn't he come up with his own?

  • @shomanca What? You think he popped out of his mother in Britian with a buzzard bass and a XXL Acoustic sound system stack? He had to make his first bass guitar with his own hands, and he had to learn how to play it. He learned how to play bass the way he does because he copied guitar riffs from many different poeple. I know what im talking about, your just riding your high horse just a tad bit too high. Lets just agree to disagree because im tired of replying.

  • @RedRicky590 I can see that you can't take a joke - anyway, let's wrap this up

  • @shomanca I used to think trolling was funny, then i took an arrow to the knee.

  • @RedRicky590 why does having a contrary opinion make someone a troll?

  • @shoman I have been wondering that ever since i registered on Youtube:)

  • RIP John Entwistle awesome bass player unbelievable solo on this song. To the still gentle talented figure stage right you'll not soon be forgotten.

  • God, but Lemmy is so better

  • @rorschach282 i think Lemmy would disagree with you there

  • hows he gettin he really trebbley sound? Like even Rush

  • I wonder if him and John McVie ever hung out.

  • I think I just broke my headphones

  • yeah, you got that one word right. GLORY

  • @C4LXD quite normal. spend 6 hours a day with guitar in hand with nights sometimes and you'll understand. You wont even notice when you hold something in left hand like it was guitar neck

  • 240p....we meet again....

  • @alexandertarangerkin Safety reasons...

  • @alexandertarangerkin

    nice one

  • @alexandertarangerkin Stupid fucking comments .....we meet again.....

  • @xxxnickrhxxx

xD, but its true tho, i get pissed by this 240p shit and it should be gone by this day and age... the original recording was way better i expect.

  • @alexandertarangerkin yea stuff looks and sounds like shit when its copied just look at cover bands

  • @alexandertarangerkin i know this is gonna sound really retarded but what does that icon even mean ?0.0

  • 3:51 (lights fade) HEY! I'm still playing

  • The "best" at anything (as well as "beauty") is, of course, subjective. As a bass player I've had many favorites; Bruce, Cassady, McCartney, etc. But Entwistle was always my favorite. He would often pluck with both sides of his fingers (front and back!) which, if you've ever tried it, is pretty damn tough. That's why he often sounded like he had 8 fingers on his right hand! Not saying he was the "best", just my favorite.

  • Some tone! Wow!

  • what pedals and/or effects does john use in this song?

  • Holy, shit! John Entwistle is actually moving! WTF? how does this happen, I've never seen him move more than five feet.

  • I think he is overprated as a bass player - just because he has a flashy style with exaggerated hand movements, everyone is wowed by him. If you actually listen to what he plays, it is not that special - running up and down the pentatonic scale. Other bass players from his period play much more interesting lines - Jack Bruce, John Wetton, John Paul Jones, just to name a few

  • @shomanca Did you even heard this bassline? Even the solo in the song is amazing. And how can you acually say that his solos are nothing special? If his solos are not good, then there are no good solos in music. If you don't like him, just don't click on the video. Every famous person has haters, you're one of them. So spare us of your comments, and watch your videos....

  • @wlattkouzd You're more of an asshole than Sho is. He gave his opinion, and now you're giving your opinion as immutable fact. Nice going.

  • @Th1sWasATriumph Let's start from the top. He came here and said that the best bass player of the milenium is not something special.

  • @wlattkouzd Let's start from the top. You are asserting that something entirely subjective is in fact objective and measurable. The moment that you can prove empirically that certain music and musicians are better, as opposed to simply evoking a particular reaction in particular people, is the moment you get to use phrases like "[adjective][musician] of the [arbitrary time period]".

    Begin!

And PLEASE don't resort to "you're a hater so I don't have to respond". Entwistle is a master.

  • @Th1sWasATriumph Im form Croatia so english is not my stronger side when it comes about talknig/commenting. I know what are you talknig about, and maybe I was a bit to offensive to shomanca. But again, John was declared as the best bass guitar player of milenium. That means something. The other thing is that I respond to his comment...

  • @wlattkouzd Declared by who? Some music magazine, I'd imagine. I know a lot of people who would contest this. Clearly John is a great bassist. But jumping from that to "he is THE greatest"?

  • @Th1sWasATriumph I didn't said that he is the best, but I said he was declared as the best bass player. It's a little confusing, but that declaration means that he is one of the best, what you already told. ;)

  • @wlattkouzd Actually it DOESN'T mean he is one of the best. That, too, is an opinion, and one we happen to share, but it's still subjective. You called someone a hater and said that if he thinks the solos are not good, there are no good solos. All because he called JE overrated. Deal with it, not everyone loves the artists you love, and if someone tried to convince you that an artist THEY liked was great that you didn't care for, you wouldn't care. Because it's taste, not fact; subjective.

  • @wlattkouzd I never said that I didn't like him, I just said that I don't think he is the best like a lot of people think. I think he is a good player, just not the best. And just because he was voted "Bass Player of the Millenium" by the readers of Guitar Magazine doesn't mean he is.

  • @shomanca Just cut the crap shit talking about The Ox, he's a good bass player and nobody says he's better than Jones or Bruce, so cut the comparisonsn and learn more about him before you speak. Thank you. Goodbye.

  • @alvaropv24 I know he was a good bass player, I just don't think he was the best, that's all

  • @shomanca or think of it this way, THIS ONE SONG is made up about 10 notes altogether. not really that hard to play, listen to some other songs, like the real me, or eminence front, then say the same thing

  • @JakeBrownYT oh yes, The Real Me - otherwise known as the Pentatonic Scale Wankfest. Eminence Front is a nice tune

  • @shomanca Jealous?

  • @JakeBrownYT why would I be jealous? I came on here saying that he was overrated, and that other bass players might be more deserving of the accolades he receives

  • @shomanca even though those are great bassists you listed, The Ox, with help from other instruments, made him ready for the fast, innovative way he played the bass.

  • @JakeBrownYT that statement doesn't make a lot of sense

  • @shomanca i know, it just keeps getting harder and harder to win this argument, i'm running out of things to say

  • @shomanca i know, it just keeps getting harder to win this argument, i'm running out of things to say. (sorry if i posted this twice, i think something might have gone wrong)

  • @shomanca I believe the proper way to say that is John Entwistle is the best bass player in the music genre in Rock n Roll and in all aspects the father of modern bass guitar, these are proven facts. Bass amplification would not be as advanced today without his innovative designs such as splitting his high and low signals, and his custom made strings(Rotosound swing 66's)

  • @RedRicky590 he was an early innovator, but that doesn't make him the best bass player in Rock and Roll - you might want to think about Billy Sheehan instead.. As for being the father of modern bass guitar, you might want to ask Jack Bruce, Paul MbCartney, James Jamerson or Tim Bogert about that

  • It's just three simple chords (F, C, Bb), but by God, what an impact.

  • He's got some fingers on him.

  • Well, what's so great about this? Only the bass line without the song just annoys me. Repeats the same line over and over again.

  • @Tttribe1 Because he's one of the greatest bass players of all time

  • @MaxlikesWeiners

    You got a point there.

  • why didn't they choose pinball wizard for this?

  • hahahahA, heard that1!

  • i get dreams about that sound.

  • It sounds so unique... Semi-slapping, semi-overdriven.

  • 3:20 is kickin

  • John always had to play at least two rythm instruments: the bass, and the drums, since Keith seemed to think that his skins were a lead instrument.

  • @VAB0L0 As John himself said, "The Who haven't a proper bass player," referring to how much of a lead he took on bass.

  • Not being a musician, I always wondered what their listening to threw the ear piece, maybe it sounds something like this

  • I love how Entwistle calls it like it is, or at least how he feels about it....right after the last note he just drops his arm off the fretboard and then shakes his head, like "welp, that kind of sucked". Meaning of course the band's performance as a whole, especially considering they hadn't been playing together much at this point and Moon, God love him, was becoming a sad shadow of his former brilliant self.

  • That was cool.

  • If I could, I'd LIKE this TWICE.

  • I always loved his bass tone and technique.

  • This is why I Hate Punk Rock The Bass Follows The Guitar Exacty, But This, This Is True Tallent

  • i never realized how sick this bassing was

  • 1:26 to skip the intro sequence.

  • Awesome tone!

  • is that an alembic bass???

  • His was the work that inspired all that immediately followed. Anyone who questions the rhythm work of The Who questions music itself.

  • han oido la version de the acid queen de la pelicula? no chinguen, ese bajo me hace bailar si que o lo quiera

  • how did u do that?

  • @rallyeluke He's playing along, they just isolated his sound from the others.

  • @rallyeluke i was bored wen i was doing ur mum.

  • You were bored at school as well I take it? seeing as you cannot spell @UltimateWhoFan

  • @rallyeluke its a thing called text language you cock. BETTER NOW?

  • "text language" being reserved for morons and idiots, hence why you use it @UltimateWhoFan

  • @UltimateWhoFan Your dad was a retard when he was doing your mom, that is why you are what you are.

  • @WilmoTheBear your lifes a bigger fail than your dads condom

  • @rallyeluke FUCK OFF U NOB

  • It's spelt "KNOB" you ignorant cunt @UltimateWhoFan

  • @rallyeluke lol he or she meant noob xD

  • nah He is from the uk (like myself) we all call each other Knob here ;) Noob is a very american thing and not said often in this country. If you call someone a Noob in the uk then its fair to say you are a cunt ;) @Bool1995

  • @rallyeluke Can you tell me what a bass guitar sounds like from inside an ass, since that has to be where your head is?

  • @Nokkieification You must recognise that sound!?!?!!?

  • he handles the bass so naturally! like it's a limb or something!

  • dear person at 1:57

GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY!!!!!!!!

    that is all

  • Damn that sounds good

  • the ox best bass player of all time!

  • Wow-in all his glory indeed!

  • HAHAHA THE BAR LOOKS LIKE A JOINT

  • can't wait for the special edition, with Townshend's 'isolated farting' circa 1976, live on Stage!

  • Respond to this video... My mom is a bass player & notices he screws up a couple times. So I say,"Hey, even gods make mistakes!"

  • @BassMisteress101 tell your mom she suck John's almighty bass

  • Wait this is from the DVD when you could listen to a certain part, my bass teacher she me this at school, until the boobs popped up.

  • never did understand what all the fuss was over this guy. He's no better than some of the decently talented 13 or 14 year old kids here on youtube.

  • @leokasper7107

    tell me youre joking?

  • @TheSmithIsDead I say without regret, no, I am not joking.

    /watch?v=gtHbxsdExlE&feature=related

  • @TheSmithIsDead

I agree.. he's good, but he's not amazing. His tone made up for what he couldn't play.

  • @leokasper7107 dont be talking down to the ox

  • Nice

  • anodino es la palabra

  • @Nokkieification I'm 97.5% sure that you haven't seen 'The Kids are Alright' movie by the Who, particularly the version mentioned in the description box (which I'm 74'3% sure that you haven't read)

And I'm 110% sure that a person that cannot even spell ENTWISTLE is in no position to tell if he is hearing an ENTWISTLE cover or NOT.

  • @testaferro

Calm down mate, I think you have anger management issues.

  • @testaferro

    Ad Hominem fallacy.

  • @testaferro great comeback

  • @Nokkieification Trust me, this is John's playing.

  • @JesseTheRef

    Fine, I stand corrected!

  • @Nokkieification Why isn't it John playing? Where did you get your information? Your, "humble opinion", is complete crap. ANYONE can see that the fingering and the notes match. There is a very brief delay between finger movement on the video and sounds being heard, but the triplets, taps and light finger slaps are coming from John's fingers not "testaferro" or anyone else. Nice try making up an imaginary percentage and trying to claim you have credibility to disprove a videos integrity. Idiot!!

  • @jacobjohnford You're the idiot mate. If you had the courtesy to read the thread before your inane rant and ridiculous accusations, you will have seen that I had accepted that this does indeed appear to be the genuine article. Muppet!

  • @Nokkieification .....to confirm testaferro's post this is 100% genuine. It is one of the special features on "The Kids are Alright" DVD.Do a little research before slagging someone!

  • @Nokkieification OWNED!

  • @Nokkieification Eh, you're speaking from ignorance. Nuff said. Better to just appear to be ignorant than to post and remove all doubt.

  • @Nokkieification its the other 2.5% dude

  • @Nokkieification OH BULLSHIT! THIS IS THE OX PLAYING!

  • @Nokkieification ur an idiot plus u got totally pwned

  • Sing you bastard Daltry ... me fingers is killin me

  • I photographed The WHo in 1976 and 1977 in Switzerland and Canada. To see the shots go to ianmarkmusicphotos (.com)

  • Noooo! Voglio anche io i porta bibite dal microfono! :D

  • Wow. I've never heard his lines isolated before. Obviously he's enormously influential to anyone who plays bass, but this sheds so much light on his talent and ear for music. So much subtlety in his style that I never knew about. Yeah he rocked, but I never knew he was throwing in so much harmony and dissonance at the same time. Thanks for sharing this.

  • @Spymagicianzero This song IS great by any bassists standards but if you think THIS song has a great bass part you are in for a shock because he is'nt really even trying, there are songs that put this one in the maybe column in the Who's catalog of John's greatest basslines,he goes well beyond this song in terms of creative bass parts, this is a mere drop in the proverbial bucket of Entwistle bassline's.

  • @cottonfever1221 just like 5:15 (the song) and my generation

  • Just another unbelievable performance by the "Ox".

  • Derek Smalls ;)

  • @Tilaron I think you're "Under the Bridge" if you catch my drift.

  • coke addict

  • @HalfofHendrix and???

  • Alembic basses are the best. Nothing beats a Series II (as seen in the video, of course)

  • @sac1577 the bassist doesn't have to be low key. just listen to flea. a good example is around the world or tell me baby.

  • @weinrichnoah Are you serious? Flea is fucking terrible. Get out of the internet.

  • How did you separated the bass sound? I have to do this in many songs to learn the bass. Can you explain to me?

  • @UserNamei5 you spelled bass wrong... just sayin

  • This epitomizes how low key the bassist role really is... One of the sickest bassists ever, playing for one of the most popular rock n roll bands in history, and I never friggin knew about him until now. Maybe I'm just slow, but I'm thinkin I'm not alone here. It's just ridiculous how he can make two and three note phrases sound sooooo interesting...

  • S U P E R !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't listen to The Doors, I don't listen to The Rolling Stones, I don't listen to Led Zeppelin (even though there is "Have A Cigar" on our setlist), and I don't listen to The Beatles. Only because I like Heavy Rock. But Fundamental You are right. \m/

  • @The1Kong you do know "Have a Cigar" is by Pink Floyd, right?

  • @The1Kong First off "Have a Cigar"is a Pink Floyd song, not a Led Zeppelin song! and if you don't listen to any of the groups you mention I can only presume you don't listen to many others of the greats.Your Rock music knowledge has to be woefully deficient!

  • @lcphillips150 Listen, mate, I just made one mistake. I hope You dont make some. And, listen again, didn't happen anything in the last 30 years? Just being wrong by mixing up Led and Pink makes You sure about my knowledge? You are so smart! Don't try and judge other people without developing the last 35 years. This year I celebrate 35 years on stage as a rock musician. And be sure, I listen to all the music I like. Stay in Your corner. The oak does not care about the pig scrubbing on her bark.

  • @The1Kong I was a professional Sound Engineer for almost 20 yrs,,House Sound Engineer for Joan Jett,Prince,Weather Report and many others. You are a Professional Rock Musician. What club will you be p[aying at?

I'll stop by and give your Soundman some tips.

  • @lcphillips150: Sorry for delay. Give me the dates of your appearance, and we will meet. Always happy when getting some advice from a pro. ;-)
