I don't get it. I've heard that the clean channel on just about every tube amplifier "sucks", even on fender amps. You can't expect state of the art clean on just a raw amp, you gotta rig it with a chorus, EQ, reverb, or whatever else your ear says is good. I think the clean demo on this is pretty good, even for a raw amp.
@virusofthedeath That Bugera is a 5150 clone and I agree, sounds a lot like it. But..when your transistors start melting and those cheap chinese parts start to fall off or break, then you will wish you had the 5150! its USA made and they use military specs. The most sough after are the orig block letter 5150's, 20 years and just gettin warmed up lol. I wouldn't trust your Bugera in a live gig without a backup. You get what you pay for, but yes they do sound alike.
@SaintsCheat Made in USA with chinese components? Good grief. I'd buy two bugeras instead of one, and with the rest of the money, ill buy 40 tubes for each amp. Theres not so much difference between the 5150 and 6262, I'm yet to see any amp builder that doesn't use chinese parts. My bugera have been running now for 3 years, same tubes that came in factory, and with a nice bias (5150, and 6262 come VERY COLD biased from factory, main reason why they sound with crossover distortion all over it).
@virusofthedeath You read wrong, 5150 is made in usa with military specs/components (means its tough as nails). Perhaps you got lucky on your buga but do some net searchings and you will hear frequent complaints about stuff melting and breaking in the bugeras. Why doesn't everyone own a 6262 instead then? Cause to some who gig, quality and reliability takes precedence over saving a few hundred bucks. 300 wont get you another 6262 and 40 tubes even if they are chinese lol
@SaintsCheat I guarantee you that it does got same china components as the bugera, the head cost like 400 €, I can buy 3 heads because the peavey is like 1400 € here in europe. People doesn't buy it because some people put brands before the amp; I've heard so many people saying OMGOMGOMG I got a peavey!! I've seen peaveys failure, mesas failuring, even DIEZELS failuring. The Bugera problem was a simple conector which was solved in the recent batches of amps. That's why mine is alive :)
@Shadowsghost specs and components as in what we would use to make military tanks and equipment. IE: it wont break down (i suppose anything can take a dive in reality), but less likely to break down rather. And it does sound like M16's if you crank it up :)
@SaintsCheat Well sounding like an M16 is def. positive lol but I really dont get what you mean by military equipment and tanks. 400-1600 mm armored amps ?^^
@deegz01 "people are always bagging the clean channel on 5150's i like it"
Oddly enough, the clean channel sounds slightly tinny on "Rockish" stuff, but sounds great doing Jazz with my Ibanez GB10 archtop - the flatwound 12's fattens the sound. Who would've thought that this "Metal" amp would work for strait-up Jazz as well?!? However, my JCM2000 TSL can cover Jazz AND the "Rockish" stuff with its clean channel...
The boss delays are brilliant, you can adjust abseloutely everything on them and the sound quality is brilliant. But if youve never used pedals before then you need to get the right power adapters or be prepared to go through loads of 9v batterys.
My issue with this amp, after playing it myself and hearing others use it online, is that no matter who plays it I hear EVH's guitar tone, which is good or bad depending on what you want. I realise many things add up to a person's sound. . . . guitar type, guitar and neck woods, strings, their actual fingers and style used. . . . but this amp undeniably sounds like that EVH sound which frankly was a turn off for me to have EVH keep popping in my head when trying to find my own sound.
i like the crunch channel better in this video, but not in real life... the lead channel is darker, has a lot more smooth bottom end (that doesn't get overbearing at loud volumes, like crunch sometimes can), and it sounds more "together", like the lows and highs dont have as much difference in tone or something
@Huzzawful Dude, countless bands have been incredibly successful using Peavey 5150s or 6505s. They have legendary tone man. I'm looking to get one myself.
Finally, no crappy camera mic demo made by an idiot who couldnt possibly understand tone if he used a 15 cent mic...nice job. People, at every chance condemn camera mic recordings--they are for total retards
maybe the best amp i've ever had pretty much too powerfull but on a good stack with a good soaker it's great most people says the clean is bad, toofix it up i'm using a tubeman H&K preamp in the power amp in via a switch pedal and it sound like a fenderr twin reverb, sound's great with my burstbucker and classic 57' of my ibanez ARC 500
This must be one of the best reviews iv'e seen/heard of the 5150 amp! Btw, can you say anything about the differences between this amp, and the other peavey/Evh amps? Whats the best choice?
Thats because he mic'd it. They say drummers are stupid but the entire Youtube guitar playing community is a bunch complete doofuses demonstrating their so called awesome tone through a 5 cent camera mic...haha
I bought a Peavey 5150 with a half stack for $10, this old couple said it was their grand kids and they wanted it out of their house, LOL! It works perfect, the only thing wrong with it is it's missing a knob.
One of my biggest regrets was selling my block letter a few years ago. God I loved that amp... But my band broke up and I wasn't gigging anymore, so I had no reason to have a huge half stack, however I wish I still had that thing. The tone was unreal.
Nothing, besides the name and the fact that it is no longer EVH's signature amp(technically.) The 5150 II and the 6505+ are the same aswell. They differ from the 5150 and 6505 by having separate eq's for each chanel and I believe a footswitchable crunch boost. They also only have one input as opposed to the two inputs on the 5150/6505 models.
thanks for explain :) I really like to know it, because I love the tonality of 5150, and also the overall look, but I'm bit worried to get one from ebay etc without hearing and seeing it live.. So I decided to check out the 6505 as an perfect equivalent.. and I can get it new..
maybe there's one more question for you.. what about the tubes ? which ones are you using ? or which ones are you recommending to use ? I've been always little confused about what brand to choose, to get the best sound.. crushing and deep.. because I'm new to tube based amps.. so I'm glad for every advice that I can get..
Unfortunately, I do not own one (YET). Although I do plan to get a 6505+ when I sell my SpiderValve head. So I can't help you in the tubes department. I myself am just getting into tube amps aswell. The best thing I can recommend is to try a bunch out and see which you like the best. You can also do a little bit of research on musicians forums where knowledgable people can probably help you out.
oh, I was expecting that you have one for sure.. sorry :) but thanks though ;) I'm getting the regular 6505 as soon as possible.. I have to get some cash together now for it, and also for some good cab..
(I'm planning oversized Marshall mode four series 280watts, loaded with moded V30 speakers which is good for low and tight sounds liek nu-metal etc. or the Peavey cab with Sheffield speakers.. but I haven't heard it live yet, but so many people told me that, it is a really good cab too, especially the older version made for 5150 amps..) I'll see which one fits better for my sound :)
Yea I'm not really into Mesa tone as much as I'm into Mesa features. But I'd rather have tone I like. Mostly I like different Peaveys, 5150 being one of them. It just has some things about it I would tweak a bit.
yer i don't know man like when i've been to concerts they have always been really fuzzy sounding and i haven't seen what it was and i thought it was a peavey and look at it and it was
this is nothing what they sound like in person. not even close lol. it's hard to tell with mic'd demos. really should try one if you're looking for something that has some serious balls. 3.5 on the gain. turn the presence up as you increase the volume.
Lol true, I find them to lack much needed higher frequencies. They are bottom heavy yes, but that lowend is never in a record. Point being you can't add what is not recorded, and I'm referring to mid and high range. The peavey has upper frequencies.
yer man i dunno when i've been to concerts the peaveys always seemed fuzzy but i don't think alot amps are really that heavy anymore everyone has to put overdrive pedals infront of them to make them sound heavy now
Great demo, but I think it would better with a cab with CL80, T-75, or K-100. The amp is very middy in nature and the speakers would complement the amp perfectly. Still, great job!
Hey man nice demo! I have a question tho... I'm having a tough decision here between the 5150 and the 5150 3. Which would you recomond? Price isn't really an issue because I have a job so if I have to wait you know an extra 2 weeks for more money for the 5150 3 then ok haha. Any advice?
Sounds sick dude. But for all the metal players out there, maybe you should have done an extra demonstration of the lead channel with the "Pre" up really high, just to show people how much gain there is on tap.
@MegaMave my point is that people crank the pre gain on these amps too high when playing loud, causing lots of unwanted noise. cranking the pregain is more useful for bedroom levels.
Can you keep the clean sound at high volumes or does it distort?

The 5150 has more balls. The 5150 II is a little tighter and has a better clean channel. Slightly less bass in the 5150II/6505+

I spoke with a peavey rep and the only difference between the three are the stock tubes and the independent EQ knobs.

Good demo thanks.
What would you recommend for punk, a 5150 or a 5150 II?

Great demo, but I think it would better with a cab with CL80, T-75, or K-100. The amp is very middy in nature and the speakers would complement the amp perfectly. Still, great job!

nice, man.and i see you didn't crank the gain, like some idiots do!
i got the combo version.these amps are like vintage cars, man.there's gotta be a club or something for 5150 owners :P

Hey man nice demo! I have a question tho... I'm having a tough decision here between the 5150 and the 5150 3. Which would you recomond? Price isn't really an issue because I have a job so if I have to wait you know an extra 2 weeks for more money for the 5150 3 then ok haha. Any advice?
AssassinSteven 2 years ago
thank you!
Yeah, the price isnt the same. I haven't tried the 5150 3 so much so I cant answer that question Im afraid.

Sounds sick dude. But for all the metal players out there, maybe you should have done an extra demonstration of the lead channel with the "Pre" up really high, just to show people how much gain there is on tap.
MegaMave 2 years ago
this amp sounds good when the post gain is pushed, not the pre gain
hetfield2x4 2 years ago
Yes, as do all tube amps. What's your point.
MegaMave 2 years ago
@MegaMave my point is that people crank the pre gain on these amps too high when playing loud, causing lots of unwanted noise. cranking the pregain is more useful for bedroom levels.
hetfield2x4 6 months ago
@hetfield2x4 Have the pre gain on 5 or 6 is plenty.
