Yes these dust storm can be dangerous, but those engines can handle way more than you think. The planes were grounded and all but a few planes were caught NEAR not in the actual storm. We didn't have much of a warning either.

It's entirely too dangerous for them to be so close, as the dust would instantly clog everything that's keeping it in the air. Any pilot with half a brain would never be even close to this thing.

@NLPCPNL I'd say that the biggest factor is that no person with a pilot's license would fly anywhere close to a dust storm. All flights are grounded and the planes would never be within the same vicinity of it. It would ruin everything that it takes to fly it.

Before I saw the vid, many people told me they were UFOs, but nobody suggested planes. Expecting to see credible evidence, the 1st time I saw it I saw planes. Not difficult either. Angle is deceptive, but as the 1st passes it is far enough in front of the storm to be a commercial jet. More compelling are the small planes at low altitude right in front of the storm (2:11). Who does that? Your tax $ used to supress storms. Hense no rain or high winds in Phx, yet an odd cascade of dust for hours???

I have seen these craft up close. If you look at about :53 you will be able to see it fairly clearly right before it goes out of frame.

At :28 an object pops in. I hope no sane pilot would venture into a sandstorm on purpose. If it were an accident, that's almost as bad. Also, wouldn't sand have a tendency to take out a helicopter?

I've only seen the footage on my phone, so it's hard to tell. Looks like the helicopter shooting it flies right over Tempe Town Lake right after the object passes, and is pointing the camera eastward. That puts it in the approach path for Sky Harbor. Which would explain the landing lights, which probably drowned out the navigation lights.

@yirizavic, I tracked down the original footage @ CNN's site for max clarity... it's a small plane that turns its wingtip lights on just as it goes off screen. Slight clarity loss in the second-generation copy obscures its wings so that they seem to emerge at the last instant, giving a morphing impression.
