  • what mouth peace is that?

  • did u shit ur pants in the process of this cause i would

  • Is that a mellophone mouthpeice?

  • The French Horn is one of the hardest instruments. The intervals are so close together on fh unlike all the instruments your band director did that on....notice she/he didn't say band director picked up french horn and did it lol!

You so owned the band director!

  • how do you manage do play these high notes, is there a special technique? when yes, could you please let me know ;P

  • But... it's the French horn! It's easier to do that sort of thing on that instrument than it is on, say a trumpet.

  • @therandomexample do you play french horn? its not easy at all to do that, much less easier than it is on a trumpet.

  • @Levisome Yes of course I do, otherwise I wouldn't have an opinion on this. Slurring in general is the french horn incarnate. The range of a hornist is usually quite wide. While this player has quite a good deal of talent, it's not as difficult as it may seem.

  • @therandomexample i play the french horn and trust me it is just as difficult as it seems...the fact that the french horn has a large range doesnt make it easy to slur large portions of it

  • It sounds like you're kicking a puppy on the high notes.

  • sounds like a cry^^

  • How do you make a trombone sound like a french horn? Put your hand in the bell and play a bunch of wrong notes.

  • @nitetrane98 I played trombone and French Horn, and trombone can take its slide and shove it up its own bell, the french horn is wayyyy better.

  • are those high notes? or is someone just getting banged in the background?

  • wow.

  • Lol no I was being sarcastic but he is quite amazing

  • @JessicaNichole14 Ok good :) I thought I was painfully inadequate for playing clarinet for 5 years... haha

  • meh

  • baaah WOOW! baaah WOOW! baaah WOOW!

  • that was crazy man XD XD

  • Don't forget to do your vowels afterwards :P

  • Que merda è essa? Alguem pode me responder em portugues

  • Pfft. Whatever. I can do that on piano all day.

  • can't even do that on the trumpet... fail

  • i think that if i could do that i would have a heart atackk

  • HOLY CRAP!

  • Woah! That's SICK! Amazing.

  • DANG!! I would never be able to do that! But I've only been playing for 3 years.../:

  • I have the same mouthpiece,

... Its not a cheater mouthpiece

  • ...its made to have that many octaves....wahts the big deal???

  • AWESOME SIMPATIQUE!!!!!!!!TECNICAL!!!!!!AMAZING!!!

  • hoooooooooooooooly shit!

  • lol nice mouthpiece

btw it sounded like a little girl screeming on the high note!!!

  • hey what skill level do you recommend switching to a deep cup mouthpeice?

  • holly cow :o

  • What type of mouthpiece is that?

  • @iDavidC1097

Check out my video response please.

  • @iDavidC1097 This is most probably a Dennis-Wick-London 5N mouthpiece for the french horn. I'm using the same now for several years, GREAT!!

  • wow thats great but try it with another mouthpiece

  • @chichoelmaton

    The video is currently uploading.

  • I showed my band director this he picked up his trumpet and he did it took my horn did it took marching French horn (melephone) did it took trombone did it took tuba did it took sax did it took flute did it and took clarinet did it... Yes my band director is Mr. Ron Potter!! He is beast and so owned you

  • @JessicaNichole14

Sweet! I can't wait to see that video reply.

  • @JessicaNichole14 you spelled "mellophone" wrong. All basis for believing you? gone

  • @JessicaNichole14 Are you telling me your band director played four octave slurs on clarinet, flute and tuba? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the clarinet/flute/tuba don't even have a range of four octaves.

Your band director must truly be something if he can play notes that don't actually exist on these instruments!

  • @Blargio666 actually the tuba has a 6 octave range...

  • @thesousabone In practical usage, I don't know how plausible that might be.

  • @Blargio666 Talk to Prokofiev about practical uses of the extended pedal range.

  • @thesousabone What style of Tuba do you think we're talking here?

  • @Blargio666 An orchestral tuba player. From Wagner to Prokofiev to Williams film scores. the 6 octave range is used.

  • @thesousabone Makes more sense. In this instance, JessicaNichole14 and I were discussing a band director, so I assumed we were speaking of a smaller band tuba.

  • Haha. Nice ending.

  • Play, scream, play, scream, play scream.

  • 3'A. You are total crazy :D :D

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that? it is insane!!!

  • @CenterEntertainment I've only seen 1 type like that, it's the one I have. It's a Denis Wick 5N heavy top french horn mouthpiece.

  • awesome :)

  • @horn1palmer the french horn could NEVER be as obnoxious as the trumpet (although there is a place in my heart for all brass) because the horn is just too classy and beautiful.

  • Your comment inspires me to put more stuff up. Check out my other vids too.

  • Wow. I saw this and it kind of inspired me. I was just bored looking around youtube and happen to come upon this. It inspires me to want to play my french horn better. Thanks =)

  • lame

  • i hate you and not because you suck but because im jealous. jk. honest, ive been playing f.horn for 6years now i have been in all county band for 4 years so i know that im a good player but i want to be on the collegiate level since now im a sr. i know trumpet and baritone and sax players that know how to double tongue, play two notes at one (i forgot the name of it) and other crazy stuff. all i want to know is, is that necessary for college bands symphonies etc or just bragging rights??

  • @TheBebe976100 Is what necessary? Double tonguing will be necessary and two notes at once isn't possible on the french horn, just the saxophone (and maybe the clarinet, I'm not sure). As for quad-octave slurs, there are probably only a handful of people on the planet that could pull that off, even if you were trying to get into Curtis you wouldn't need to be able to do that.

  • @MasteringTheClassic1 -

Sorry - 4 octave slurs are used. Many 2nd horn parts in Haydn and Mozart use no less than 2.5 octave jumps inside a single beat. The opening of Ein Heldenleben spans 3 octaves. Most professional horn players are more than capable of 4 octave slurs. Also, it's entirely possible to play 2, 3 or even 4 notes on the horn at the same time. It's called multiphonics. Weber's Concertino for horn calls for 4 pitches at the same time. I would urge you to find a good teacher.

  • @HiDefSymphony There are certainly large jumps required in horn playing, but there is as much difference between a three and four octave slur as there is between a high C and the C an octave above it. I realize also that most professionals have a 4+ octave range but how many of them could sit down right now and nail a clean, 4 octave slur?

I'll look into multiphonics, it sounds cool. I also hold to my statement that you won't need a quad octave slur to get into a good college, or even Curtis.

  • @MasteringTheClassic1 -

Re: the 4 octave slurs... I can. My colleagues in my section can. In fact, almost any pro horn player I know can. It's not difficult. Once you understand the facets of your 3 embouchures (low, mid and high) and how to transition through them, you'll see that it's quite easy. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, Bill VerMuelen has his students do 4 octave glisses daily. You won't need a 4 octave slur to get in, but the ability to do them demonstrates your mastery of range.

  • @HiDefSymphony Fair enough. I'm not trying to get into Curtis, it was just the best music school I could think of.

  • @MasteringTheClassic1 -

Also, if you're bent on Curtis (which it seems like you are), you should contact Jen Montone. She's a very approachable and sweet person (& the horn instructor at Curtis & principal horn in Philly). I guarantee she (& Jeff, Shelly, Denise & the others in Philly) can do 4 octave slurs. But, on top of that, she can help you with what she wants to hear from prospective candidates. Consider Temple, Rice & Rutgers. The best horn instructors in the country are there right now!

  • Great Display of power, range, and accuracy! I read through some of the comments here and you idiots that can't play hi, but think you could if only you had his mp, need to find a teacher and a practice room! I could hold a loaded gun to 25 pro french horn players and teachers and force them to play what was played in this video and there would be 23 or 24 dead....meaning one or two could have played it....very difficult!

  • I can play four octaves but I go down further to the C below the bass staff, and only go to the C above to treble. I'm poor so I use a Farkas MDC. I've never tried the slurs though.

  • I can play four octaves but not slur them XD but I am a 6th grade horn player no kidding

  • Haha! I can't even get a high C above the staff. Kudos.

  • @peepzstar Lol that's sweet b/c I started with clarinet and I'm in 6th grade and we had try outs for like French horn, saxophone, percussion, oboe, tuba, bassoon. I tried out b/c my teacher said I'm above average, my intention to try to make was the oboe or bassoon but I tried everything except percussion and tuba and made the French horn. So the french horn is fun, but I cant make a car siren lol n_n' .

  • Any horn player could do that with the type of mouth piece you have :0 daaa?!

  • you are funny amazing:)

  • what mouthpiece is that

  • that is so cool even though the mouthpiece is strange. will have to ask my teacher about that. im a 8th grd band player. im originally a clarinet player in my second year but i also started to play the trumpet the french horn the baritone the oboe and im also going for the saxaphone.. and i know some percussion. my teacher said im better than the second year trunmpet player and im the 1st clarinet. im also can play from low C to high F an dthis is about my second week. its really fun.

  • @peepzstar

Honestly I would chose one instrument you like best then put your time towards playing that instrument. It would be better to be an expert at one instrument then above average at all of them. Also it is almost impossible to produce a good tone switching between brass instruments. I can play trumpet and baritone however I will not touch one if I have a performance coming up playing on the other. It really messes with your emboucher. Also a player matters much more then a mouthpiece.

  • nope. i use the same embouchure for them.

  • so so

  • What kind of mouthpiece do you use,i have braces and its been painful so im trying to find a different mouthpiece. I play French Horn, tuba, trumpet and pretty much the rest of the brass. ( :

  • @bayweelizzybeth

It's not really the mouthpiece. It's gonna hurt either way. I suffered through braces myself. I definitely recommend using wax on the front teeth, top and bottom. what do you currently use?

  • É incrível! Com o afinador eletrônico ligado, e depois de repetir várias vezes, registrou de Dó#1 a Fá5, mais que 4 oitavas (7ª linha acima do pentagrama em clave de Sol).

It's amazing. With eletronic tuner in on, after many repeats, he makes notes between C#1 at F5, more than 4th octaves. (7th line above staff in G clef). Congratulations!

  • great. What is exactly the name , th ind of ur mouthpiece ? pls

  • i can't do even 2 octave D:

  • Holy shit. Can't do that on a euph though

  • what it sound like on the cornet/trumpet?

  • sounds like banshee...

  • Hi. That's an impressive demo. I'd love to know how you put the embouchure mechanics in place. Andrew Joy

  • wow.....

lovin my obnoxious days too :D ripping up and down the scales and doing an incorrect vibrato just to be funny

  • It's called having good embochure muscles. This guy obviously has them too. Speaking of Farkas. Read his book on the horn. It's practically a bible and will tell you this guy obviously knows his stuff. Mouth piece helps with tone. It has nothing to do with embochure so lay off him.

  • hahaha i love those obnoxious days!! some times i get bored practicing some of the lit. i have so i just fool around with pedal tones and etc. love my Giardinelli G17

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome stuff. I might have to try one of those mouthpieces some day.

And lol @ comments. Defending the Farkas MDC are you fucking joking? I've buzzed on leadpipes that were more comfortable than that POS. If you like deep, try a Schilke 32. Your lips will thank you.

  • Sounds more like a guitar. That's awesome.

  • @InterestingFlavour I disagree with it sounding like a guitar and if it did it would not be awesome.

  • Lmao

  • There's no such thing as a 'cheater' mouthpiece...

  • The mouthpiece is irrelevant. I play horn, trumpet, Euphonium, and trombone. I can do the exact same thing with a Euphonium or trombone, and mostly the same with a trumpet. Do you think playing a shallower mouthpiece, such as the c6, which was discontinued two years ago, would make any difference to me?

  • @horn1palmer I too am a multi-brass player. Playing all or most brass teaches you the difference between truth and fiction. As I too have been saying for many years- the mouthpiece is irrelevent. You've either mastered the techique of playing or you haven't. You've obviously done the work. You don't have to defend yourself.

  • @horn1palmer hey i play trumpet and i recently purchased a French horn(not double) and a Euphonium off of ebay, Its a Olds Baritone but anyway is it possible to do this on a Single French horn

  • the mouthpiece is wierd which explains the high pitches. purchase a giardinelli c6 and try that again. that is a standard and possibly the best mouthpiece for a french horn player..

  • Thats No MouthPeice Ive Ever Seen..

  • @greekdomination2 I wasn't talking crap, I am sorry if it offended anyone. I'm just saying that it will be easier to hit higher notes on that mouthpiece than others.

  • @greekdomination2 -continued- The cup is not rounded to the sides, which enables you to blow your air with more ease. How about you think before you run your mouth.

  • @greekdomination2 look at it. It's basically a Trumpet mouthpiece. I will "run my mouth" all I want. I've played Horn for quite a while. I have also played Mellophone, a Mellophonium. and a Marching French horn as well a Trumpet for at least 6 years. I've used a Trumpet mouthpiece, same "cup" as that mouthpiece on a Mellophone, basically a marching Horn. I can hit 2 octaves higher. The Cup of the Holton Farkas enables is so sleek and People have tried to find better but have not.

  • With a autistic´s mouthpiece

  • Try doing those crazy octave jumps on a holton Farkas MDC mouthpiece not a cheater mouthpiece like that.

  • Why would I want to play such an inferior mouthpiece? It is all about tone. Yes I realize the irony of posting this comment on my own vid like this. lol

  • @horn1palmer lol, yeah good one, but the MDC has been around for years and no one has been able to beat it's design which can make a tone sound really rich and dark, but at the cost of some range due to the amazing tone. Your mouthpiece is a beginner mouthpiece, people use it transferring from trumpet to horn, just look at it It's basically a trumpet mouthpiece with a smaller shank. But I'm not trying to diss you, those jumps WERE crazy haha but try it on a real French cupped mouthpiece. ;)

  • @Linkweskerleon777 The MDC isn't really a large mouthpiece, in fact I'm pretty sure that the one he is using is larger.

  • @Deathwish42 It's more of a conical shape, meaning it's harder to hit the higher register. That is basically a trumpet mouthpiece with a smaller shank. You can play 3 octaves higher with a trumpet mouthpiece due to it's shank and cup being so narrow

  • @Linkweskerleon777 I was unaware of the different shape of the dennis wick mouthpeices, thanks for intelligently informing me as opposed to the internet standard reaction. I wouldn't call the 5n a cheater mouthpiece though, even if it is shallow for a horn mouthpiece.

  • @Deathwish42 Of course. I mean I guess it's not a cheater mouthpiece, it's just a somewhat of a beginners mouthpiece, In MY opinion of course.

  • @Linkweskerleon777

I'm uploading a video right now. I do this on a Parke DeRosa, Conn 2, mdc, dc, vdc, xdc, and a euphonium mouthpiece with a french horn shank.

  • ahahahah Cool!!=D (H)

  • @holeypants74 wrong...

  • @holeypants74 Seems like someone is a woodwind player

  • Loved the thumbs up and cheesy smile :)

    Also the jumps were mad.

  • wat type of mouth piece is that?

  • lol...."to bring the obnoxiousness of the trumpet to the French horn"

  • You are invited to join the French horns from Around the World group on this channel.

  • that does not even sound like a note

  • Comment removed

  • dear lord!! thats craziness right there i sure bet ur lip were shoot after that one...

  • Wow... you must play for money, thats some useful stuff...

  • That's impressive.

  • HA!

Thats my teacher right there, obnoxiousness to the max bro!

(By the way, I practiced "Judas Maccabeus", and its starting to work out pretty well, kinda easy actually, just gotta work on cracks and other tuba crap and then just need to memorize it for state.

You can probably guess who I am. :)

  • Oh man... I thought I was good just being able to play the four octaves.... You kind of just dominated all over everything!

  • What's that mouthpiece's deal?

  • It's a Denis Wick heavytop 5n.

It's my favorite. It does everything pretty well.

  • Woah it looks weird, I guess I just haven't seen a lot of mouthpieces before o-o

  • It does look pretty weird. You're right.

  • @horn1palmer

i love that - 'it does everything pretty well'. well, it doesn't does it?

  • @horn1palmer heck yea it does....i love denis wick!!!!!!!!!!!!even if it does look like a muffler

  • haha :) i play saxophone and he gives me lessons on baritone on mondays :p hes super good... at every brass instrument lol there you go mr. palmer, that should increase your ego :)

  • Well done :)

  • I instantly envy you.
