Several of the founding fathers Jefferson Adams Franklin James Madison and others were NOT Christian, they were Deist or influenced heavy by Deist thought. This is why we have a first amendment or a Jefferson called it a "Wall between church and state." I have no problem with unabashed Christians holding office, however when they allow their religion to run the government, even if it means stepping all over civil rights and other supposedly protected freedoms of ALL the people, it's a problem
@WRCis Let's follow your intellectually lame logic: The bible says murder and stealing are wrong. Therefore, if you are a Christian and are elected you should resist the impulse to fortify these values (commandments) in your initiatives, because you have no business bringing your religious views into government. Read Rehnquists statements on the mythological "Wall". The constitution guarantees freedom OF religio--not freedom FROM religion.
I think I agree with McDonnell and then again I do not. I think marriage in the context of religion is definitely between a man and woman, but at the same time, I think marriage in the context of the state is very different. It is a matter of rights such as insurance, finances, and many other things. I think that there should be a separation of the two. So I guess I agree and disagree, but in the end I think I would vote against the bill.
@t0nyc0nde Well, McDonnell's fiscal restraint has just turned a massive deficit into a $220 million dollar surplus....not unlike the Republican Congress that took Control and balanced the budget after Clinton went insane....I wonder what "galling" principles they share. Whatdaya think sport? Don't spend what doesn't belong to you? Delay gratification? Teach people to work?
