There might be some mistakes that the referee had made but I am sure he had no intention to deliberately disadvantage Italy or to advantage korea . By the way I had watched the whole match and idn get the impression that the referee is biased to one side.

Finally, I'd like to say that given my generally negative comments towards the 2002 cup:
1. I blame the refs and not the Korean players. They played how they played, who knows what did or didn't go on behind the scenes.
2. I thought S. Korea played great in 2010. Fun to watch, good football, didn't flop nearly as much as other teams. I liked them a lot.

@ogurantz ye, it had nothing to do with the players, whether they plan cleanly or dive like crazy, its up to the referees to keep order in a match. and the 2002 Korean team could not have advanced through the group stage and eventually gotten to the semi finals without the help of tipped off faulty refereeing.

This video "Why Korea shouldn't have reached the 2002 WC 4th place" is obviously REALLY biased in the other direction, but gives some flavor of the fouls that S. Korea would commit and the ref would just play on - again, not just against Italy. From watching those matches in 2002, this is where lots of the frustration of the opposing side would come from.

My bias: I thought S. Korea consistently got calls throughout the 2002 WC. One, they got the cheap penalty against the US, played against 9 man Portugal, (I didn't see the Poland game), and the last game against Spain was by far the most egregious.
What this video omits is the biggest issue, all the times S.Kor players fouled throughout their matches and didn't get called. This frustrated their opponents, which is some of the reason for the violent backlash and frustration from their opponents.

@prismflash Disagree. I think people tend to focus on the controversy they just saw, but when I was watching these matches in 2002 they were the worst I've ever seen. For example, other than the Argentina bad offsides call I thought the game was officiated fine. In 2002, I thought the officiating was horrendous throughout, and I would argue that determining who goes into the semis (as Spain/Korea did) is more important than any of the games today.
