@ScriptWorker I agree. Même quand sa composition est modeste, Morricone reste un génie assez indépassable de l' orchestration. Ce n' est pas John Zorn qui dira le contraire.
It's actually your regular standard Morricone western theme, but once again it's so rich in arrangement, and it's lively and funny and exciting. And never forget; this was made over 40 years ago. It still rocks.
Also listen to Cavalcata per Elise (The Genius), March of the beggars (Duck You Sucker), the titoli of Che C'Entriamo Noi Con La Rivoluzione and the hauntingly beautiful love theme from Faccia a Faccia, all can be found on YouTube.
Arguably, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly rates as one of his biggest and definitely his most popular soundtrack. To me, his saddest music has always been the title theme from Orca, Killer Whale. If ever there was a sound to portray the plight of the whale, this is it!! His most haunting music to me is the title themes from Death Rides A Horse and The Big Silence. The track An Indian Story from Navajo Joe portrays the plight of the red indian like no other. What sadness this man can create.
A now-cloassic, cult film; I saw it, & I'd love to have it. Peter Graves was The Dutchman, & he was soo cool. should have been much, much bigger. Wolfsky9
As Quentin Tarantino has said; "The greatest ammalgamation, or should I say perfect marriage of direction and score ever in the history of cinema, must be that of Leone and Morricone". I wholly totally agree with that statement. Oh by the way, those of you looking for the soundtrack to the "Five Man Army", try out Amazon or Ebay. I have seen copies of the soundtrack at these sites.
Decent movie, prevented from being good-great by some poor casting in places (*cough* Dutchman). Tetsuro Tamba's fall from the train and the five minutes of scenary shots in which he attempts to make it back on are, strangely, the only vivid memory I have of this film.
I used to be little boy in Kuwait in the 90's, and used to watch Five Man Army like 100,000 times for the train sequence and this soundtrack. Kudo's to whoever put it up here ! Now its with us forever !!
brilliant!

What a great sound: that is Morricone's specialty, of course. It changes about every two bars.

This reminds me of some Kill Bill themes. Tarantino didn't make too much for distinguish himself from Leone and Morricone.

@54gfan Indeed. This is one of the master's great tunes, despite being a bit obscure like the film (which was great and well-written) itself.

OK film, great soundtrack. It could have benefitted from a bigger budget a different director & a better screen play. It's worth a watch tho.
Sort of a poor man's 'Dirty Dozen (minus 7) cum Von Ryan's Express' set in Mexico if that makes sense.
