  • Well done.... very nice. Great work

  • @singmysong4444 I appreciate your comment.

  • This is amazing man its def similar to herbie but you also put ur own style into it which is great. Please make more like this

  • @infestedduke Thanks.

  • Since you going to the v zone, what happened to volvoxburger. He had a vid of Bedtime Story I put in favs and notice it's gone and he shut down his page. Love his playing and style as well.

If you get a chance could you do one on Tell Me A Bedtime Story?

  • I'm way late on see this one. Looove it.

  • @jazzyat Better late than never. ;-)

    Thanks.

  • "Just" = what an understatement - unless you mean "Just perfect."

  • @Halunlimited I appreciate your comment - thanks.

  • Cool, but that delay effect was a bit over the top

  • Great stuff! thanks

I'm just about to get this vst - Lounge Lizard ep3 through Applied Acoustics.

  • @dwellceller Yeah, Lounge Lizard is great.

  • is that a real rhodes you are playing. looks like it but how are you showing what you are playing? computer program?

  • @tyleryesta1 It's a Roland FP-4 with Lounge Lizard Rhodes emulation. I used a picture of Volvoxburger's Rhodes top and superimposed it on this video. ;-)

  • More Herbie! Could you possibly do some Chick Corea? You've done your homework; I have probably over 100 albums of Hancock (or with him playing) and I can tell you this is dead on.

  • @JetForceF22 I appreciate your comment, thanks.

  • That's great man... thumbs up

  • @EmanuilPenev I appreciate your comment.

  • that s great impro with simple herbie chords

  • @calignula I appreciate your comment.

  • definitely..gorgeous. I love your chops. Finally a tutor-style video to do Herbie justice.

  • @rayboludo Thanks for your comment.

  • oh this is great man

  • @Berkeleyloops I appreciate your comment.

  • Very nice!

Did you make the backing track yourself?

  • @KilroyWasHere11 Yes, the backing track is available on my website. See description of video for info.

  • Amazing...it's like going back to 1972 or something...Rhodes Piano, Echoplex, Satellite Speaker package, bell bottom jeans, Afro haircuts, Nixon, Viet Nam war, Mile's "Bitches Brew", Watergate, Dirty Harry....amazing amalgam...even if you didn't know it!

  • Thanks Marius! Yes, I did have a Rhodes suitcase and an Echoplex back in the '70's....

  • Very nicely done. I've got to put something up like this for Lennie Tristano's and Martial Solal's styles.

  • Thanks for your comment. Yes, by all means, post it.

  • relax song!!!!

    excellent!!

    5 stars

  • ...Outstanding!...

    Sincerely,

    Bill McBirnie

  • I appreciate your comment Bill.

  • oops...forgot about the 11th

  • Have a book with transcribed Herbie Hancock solos. There's this one left hand chord was wondering what it is. Seems like a Dm with an altered 6th

    A, Bb, D, F, G

  • This is fantastic, first chord gave me shivers! :) Thanks for awesome playing & video :)

  • Thanks for your comment.

  • supercool,5*

  • Very good technique and phrases..!!!

  • 1:51 - 1:56 What was that? How'd you do it? Awesome stuff, thanks!

  • another great lesson thank you sooooooooooooooooMuch

  • I like this

  • Great playing!

  • Thanks for the comment.

  • Very nice Roger. Great stuff to watch and listen. Keep it up. Much appreciated.

  • Thanks Steve. I greatly appreciate the comment.

  • It's great to learning!

    Many thanks!!!

    Beautiful playing!

  • as you say its herbies style but it takes style to emulate it! excellent sound!

  • amazing!!! i love it

  • Thanks for your comment.

  • i've been playing the piano since i was 9, i found myself during may yrs to practice off and on vetween the ages of 9 and 30 ,since i turn 31 in march i plan to finally take a deep breath and take my piano playing serious by by hitting the wood shed, if you had to give me one simple advice that would change my playing forever what would it be.

  • I love the sound of the Rhodes...smooth....smooth stuff...very, very nice.

  • Sapce ...Cosmos and LSD...consciousness...magic Sex

    excelent!!!

  • COSMIC!

  • o yes those chords melt me

  • man, I wish I could play like that....

  • Come on, you're just as good as the v-burger! Great video, and please keep them coming (with the midi keys - this is how I learn!).

People actually requested seeing facial contortions!? That's so bizarre if that's true.

Either way, I think the facial contortion cam is great. I can't tell if you're playing the keyboard or having an orgasm.

    ;)

  • Thank's Roger, you put air and oxygene in your music.Could you explain me how to do it?

Basicaly your left hand vocing is F Ab Gb and your melody line is based on a Dm blues scale but I' like to know what is the bass line, because my olds ears can't hear it !!!

  • Thanks. The bass is super simple: D to F that's it!

  • Volvoxburger is a great inspirator and so are YOU!

  • ...in other words... long live music....R

  • in other words...pretty funky shit l.t.l. R

  • hey lot to learn...thanks for this...it's stuff i can do but i didnt realise i could...u have the right feel...and...ok....i wish i wuz herbie...but some of his stuff was shit...and u r the enabler and he is not..so in many ways ur better...so that's important shit..viva music teach'...i'm off to have fun with these chords..R

  • I've played the tenor all my life. Took up the keys 8 years ago. Horn solos have always been easy to transcribe. It's those darn piano solos that rack my brain. Thanks for the insite.

  • Very nice playing. 2:09 thru 2:30 is favorite.

  • Thanks. Yeah that section has some classic Herbie lines. ;-)

  • What's it like to fly ?

  • Thanks for listening.

  • Hey sir! great stuff as usual!:) im trying to get into this kinda groovy stuff as well!

Is their anyway i can buy/download this backing track? its awesome to groove and dream on!

    Thx in advance!

  • Muy bien senor .....me gustaria tocar asi ...

  • Awesome! You do justice to those 12 notes. Really appreciate your sharing so generously, your practice technique videos in the styles of McCoy and Hancock - two of my three favourite top keyboard players.

Has opened new doors, for me, toward the correct pathway of jazz, which has not only helped me a great deal, in improving my style/practice regimen, but, I am now, beginning to understand better, what I'm doing while improvising.

  • Thanks for the comment dude. ;-)

  • You're welcome... ;>

judging from all the posts, here, I take it, you've been playing professionally on the jazz/funk mainstream since the 70s?

I've noticed, you've also got an Ensonic TS 12 - tried that one out, a couple of times, and, fell in love with it's hammer action, as compared to most of the newer weighted synths. Cheers ;>

  • I love it all...but the dissonant chromatic upper and lower neighbor ideas were my favorites.

  • Really love the sound and am trying hard to replicate it! Peace

  • i have a request for hiromi uehara's song called sakura sukara

  • Smooooooooothhh Jaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Thank you so much for these videos. I just got a Rhodes and these videos are very instructive and help alot in discovering all the hip voicings of jazz piano. Not only that but you're playing is really fantastic!

  • are you serious?

    lucky ass.

how much did you pay?, what model?

  • did you used a tap tempo to set the delay at the end?

  • The delay was set in the Lounge Lizard Rhodes emulator at the start of the piece.

    - L2L

  • This is a HUGE help to me as a self taught musician trying to learn more jazz skills so I can say a bit more on any instrument, piano included. Really like the style and I am also a rhodes player (on my Nord stage). What really helps is the added 'visual' bar illustrating where exactly your fingers are going. Amazing stuff. It means I can pause the vid and write down what notes you are playing, then work out the chord. Thank you so much for this, Please post more

  • Thanks SO much for this. This is giving me a lot of insights into the Herbie style of Rhodes playing. If you ever want to hear a really spacey, atmospheric Rhodes record that takes cues from Herbie's playing but is something of its own animal as well: Marc Cary- "Rhodes Ahead." One of the best Rhodes recordings in recent years.

  • Great thing.

    I like it!

    Nice ideas!

Dont know what more to say!

  • Thank you, Igor.

  • Is that a rhodes keyboard? What "tone" or setting is that on (i.e. electric piano 1? etc)

  • cool

  • Super!

Is it possible to see a slower version to see what you are doing?

  • Being able to play like this is a real gift..., thanks for shareing these clips and for the teaching.

    Take care.

  • Hi!! L2L!!THanks for sharing your knowledge, I would like to know what chords are you playing in this video! Thank you very much!!

    Mariano

  • Funny thing is I was groovin to this piece. Looked to see who posted it, Lot2learn...Just had to shake my head. Herbie Hancock is a favorite of mine and you nailed it!

  • Thanks Aaron!

    - L2L

  • My praise You know, . . 5*, so I go right to my question - Is Adobe Premiere allowing 4 cams even or more

    -

I allways thought you needed special hardware for that.

  • Once Again, thanks for so generously posting this and sharing all the other wonderful videos you have done. You and Volvoxburger are the best teachers I've ever had.

  • can you enlighten me on what's goin' on??.. i'm tryin' to understand scales with key changes and can't find any info online about it.. the first half has the same notes as an E minor pentatonic blues scale (also works with A natural minor).. and the second part has the same notes as a C minor pentatonic and F minor pentatonic put together and i don't understand how the E and A scales go with the D bassline.. as well as why the C scale works with the F bassline. some help would be appreciated..

  • its says on the side that the bass is goin from D to F.. the chords look like Dminor9 to Fminor9 with and occasional Eflat minor 9.. and if i play the D and F on the bass with the left hand it didn't seem to totally agree to me at first when i tried to do runs on the scales.. because i usually play in minor pentatonics..

..i'm tryin' to train my ear because i really dig the sound you're workin' with.. being insipired is sometimes not enough to fully understand it..

  • Too awesome, I simply love your playing!

  • you're with no doubt the best fenderrhodes-pianist on youtube! This is incredible! Can't stop listening to this;

  • Thanks Joel!

    - L2L

  • where are you based? Do you teach?! I wanna learn jazz piano and jazz theory from you!

  • Really sweet, sounding very Herbie like here. Great use of the stereo, and that Rhodes sample sounds almost like the real thing. Love that delay effect. Great playing as well.

  • Thanks Dave!

  • simpy beautiful... very soft and fits perfectly in a piano bar session.

  • Hmm I guess applying the same effects over Scarbee samples would probably get you a much better sound for the rhodes...If I had a machine to run it on I'd buy Scarbee's rhode samples in a flash.

  • 1:36 to 1:50 I swear VB possessed your fingers slightly!LOL! Very refreshing abd enjoyable piece of playing. Alas the Rhodes tone cannot match VB's classic kit!!

  • i would've just liked to hear ur playing and not the screeches and bloops and drum machine, which didn't really jibe went with ur fantastic playing

  • Hi great lines.

What is the program above that shows the note you are playing. How does it work?

  • I am finding it very hard to believe that you have "lots 2 learn." I find it easier to believe you are a top pro who has either earned or is earning lots of money and is very successful. The very best to you. :-)

  • You are so funny Mr. Vibeman! Of course you know that there's no money in jazz! Thanks for listening.

  • Now why did I know you would say that about money in jazz...:-)

Man, you are great anyway! And how are you doing those vids with three windows????

  • A program called Adobe Premiere Elements 3 lets me layer the videos. ;-)

  • ur playing sounds a bit like george duke too. awesome song.

  • Hey Roge, you actually had a rhodes and echoplex? I didn't know you were THAT old! :-)

  • Ha, ha! Thanks Menno. ;-)

  • Another very different Lot2Learn on this one. Reminds me of the Herbie Hancock demos of Fender Rhodes pianos I heard in the 70's - I think it was with something called an 'echoplex' - one of those tape loop machines that created interesting echo effects - I remember it sounded amazing at the time to my pre digital effects ears.

    Great stuff Roger

  • Thanks Doug. I did in fact have a Fender Rhodes and an Echoplex back in the '70's. Those were the days. ;-)

  • I like it! Well done, yet again! :)

  • Super.. thanks for posting !

  • I'll second that.

Fantastic. Really enjoyed the sweet improve.

The facial expressions are a definite plus. Especially at the end. LOL!

    Nice.

This is an Overall Phat track and video!

  • Thanks AG!

    - L2L

  • Hehe it's great seeing this humor amongst y'all :)

Great flight into the zone, Roger!

    ♪♪♪♪♪

  • Interesting approach, nice idea. This time is sound like fresh new air :-)

    * * * * *

  • Nice ... that's really terrific playing.

Where did you get that rhodes sound anyway??

  • It's called Lounge Lizard Electric Piano, a software emulator.

  • You're really pushing into new territory, Now this sounds like you got into a time machine and went back to the late 70's, channeling HH, you are! Roger. It's a fearless performance with no self conciousness at all. *****

  • One of these days I'll have to try me some of that midi...

Pretty great tune (don't expect me to follow suit and do a face cam though).

OK kids, the secret's out--it's all about the yellow patch cord.

  • Please please do the face cam. Please?

  • wow that sounds really good
