We both agree that we need alternative engergy sources, but thats not going to happen overnight. in the meantime we should be drilling oil, at the moment thats where we're at that's what we have. I work in the pet food business, for me to keep my job, pay my bills and eat, I need there to be plenty of fuel so those pet treats get to the market, I'm sure if most people would find themselves in a similar situation if they stoped and thout about it. Oil equals employment for 99.9% of the population
Taz is exactly correct. Liberals keep squawking about researching "alternative energy sources" but guess what? THEY'VE BEEN RESEARCHED. For decades. We know lots about hydrogen, solar, electric, etc. Nothing as of yet comes close to the ability of fossil fuel to provide us the transportation we need to run our economy. I'd like to think someday electric cars will be efficient enough to compare with gasoline-powered cars, but until they do, we need to DRILL, HERE, NOW.
I think you're totally wrong. I saw a program on the Discovery Channel about the alternate sources for cars. Hydrogen and Electric power is much more promising than you think. Tesla Motors has a car out(Sure, it's over $100, a bit pricey) and it's fully electric. AND it goes faster than most street legal cars.
Hydrogen and Electric cars are not "promising" until they cost what a typical gasoline-powered car costs. The Tesla is $100K, which is out of reach for the vast majority of consumers. There are no production Hydrogen powered cars available for anyone to purchase, so one can only assume those are astronomically expensive to produce as well. If and until we have viable, affordable alternative energy sources for cars, we need to DRILL, HERE, NOW.
If the government officials allow private companies to drill for more oil, do those companies have to sell that oil to America? (NO) Do we have oil from america that is being sold to other countries right now? (YES)
I don't know about the rest of you, but caraboo and spotted owls don't but food on my table or a roof over my head. So I couldn't care less about them, These tree huggers need to get thier priorities straight, or at least get out of our way.
We all knew back in the seventies we should be doing something but everyone said they didn't care. Now it's hitting us in the face and all of the sudden, people care again. Don't expect me to care that you've totally wasted all this time driving around in an SUV. Don't expect me to run to your rescue. You and your kind got us into the problem, and now you have to suffer the consequences. Stop whining about it.
Never have driven an SUV. But even if I had what does it matter. We should have started drilling AND looking at alternative sources of engery a long time ago. But you libs just don't get it. You'd rather us live like we're in the stone age or be dependent on people who hate us for our engery supply than let the "evil" oil companies drill. You and your kind are the problem and the American people are starting to wake up and see what a load of crap the environmental movement is.
I don't want us to live in the stone age OR be dependent on others for oil. I want to research alternative fuels. It's because of conservatives we haven't been doing that and NOW we have that horrible choice.
Carter was telling us what we needed to do 30 years ago. I haven't heard anyone say anything until now, and now it's an emergency. Why is it conservatives get mad at liberals for making up issues, and 30 years later suddenly agree there's a problem?
Alternative energy sources have been researched for as long as we've been using fossil fuels. Guess what? The few alternative energy sources that exist (wind, solar, etc) ain't viable for use in cars. If they were, companies would be lining up in our capitalist system to sell alternatively-powered cars. The only thing that comes close to matching the range and efficiency of a standard internal combustion engine car is the Tesla electric roadster, which sells for over 100K. We need to DRILL.
Note the use of 'OCS' instead of 'Outer Continental Shelf' intended to distance the policy from the reality.
How about reducing consumption, instead of increasing production? Oil is a FINITE resource, whatever your thoughts about Climate Change are, and it will not last forever.
there are 5 ways to cut oil costs. 1. carpool. 2. ask the govt. to spend money on mass transit. 3. ask the govt. to expand amtrak into a national rail system. 4. as the govt. to get detroit to improve mileage standards on new u.s. cars. and 5. bring back the 55 a mile speed limit.
We need more fuel efficient cars. We need to do lots of heavy research in that direction.
I could easily see the oil companies try to block something like this behind the scenes. If we have cars that go 80 miles a gallon or that we can plug in to refuel. They wouldn't make a lot of money off of us.
Forget the line that we can't be a slave to foreign oil, we need to stop being slaves to the oil companies period!!!
I know it's a bunch of bullshit, And the drilling these stupid republicans are pushing for wont do anything for 10yrs! We need a broad spectrum of alternative fuels, more than one source!
Then stop being a slave to the Oil Companies and stop using their evil OIL!!! If every single hypocrite who consumes oil and is against Oil Drilling would just stop using oil, the oil prices would drop in no time.
It's like a coke addict, looking under his couch for a few specks of powder. He doesn't want to withdraw, because it will be painful. But he is going to withdraw if he wants it or not.
2/3 of americans say "drill away". And build more nuclear power plants. The country is going GREEN anyway. Cheaper gas and heating oil will allow more people to afford to upgrade their homes, vehicles, and businesses to energy efficient and eco friendly. And to be energy independent would mean we won't need to be in places like the middle east.
You clearly are the smart one at home . . . "Cheaper gas and heating oil will allow more people to afford to upgrade their homes, vehicles, and businesses to energy efficient and eco friendly" . . . makes a lot of sense indeed, that is, if you lack reason and common sense
I agree mccain is for corporate fascism but you guys are so asshole and have killed probably billion of people on the planet earth. so you deserve it in the ass...go start begging on the street as its your future.
The problem with that idea is you do not understand how many undereducated American there are, and how much control the corporate mediaocracy has on society. Our government will just create another False-Flag War against the list of countries to exploit. Your forgetting that the US is in collusion with the UK and all of the UK's past territories and the EU or NATO. Sooner or later there needs to be a massive artificial genocide (WAR) and you my friend will be in the media's cross-hairs.
The enemy is not the American people it is the system that manages society (Conflict Theory). Americans are programmed by right-wing DirectTV and other corporate media monopolies to believe anything in a artificial disaster such as 9/11. I'm sure the master minds at the top are already planning a second 9/11 type event in order to create the never ending war or conflict. The Vietnam War was designed to be a never ending war, and now with terrorism who really is the enemy?
Forget oil get electric cars, whats that your all too stupid, what are you going to do when the when the Arabs get tired of the Jews stealing their land and turn of the taps
So what would happen after that 10 year supply we get from drilling here? Same crisis as today............forget oil, focus our effort on an alternative
how bout we let the oil companies drill but take away their subsidies and tax breaks and force them to be responsible in case of accidents. lets see how fast (or slow) they scramble to that new oil...
I don't want more companies going around screwing our country simply because John down the street is too stupid to be paying over $100 to fill up his truck. When what he should be doing is demanding alternative technology, and fuels. And of course the American Petroleum Institute is going to make the claim that this will save all our problems. B.S.
WorldTravelTV : excellent comment. I would add to that, we need better ways of making cars. After WW2 the Europeans were making 1man cars that got 90mpg because they were so light. The advances made in computer-controlled 3D weaving of carbon fibres that Boeing used in the 787 could also be used in a new generation of highly efficient cars.
This is just a stupid reply. So yeah, let the poor suffer like usual. Hey, lets all start riding horses again. You want to see oil spills and a mess on our coastal shores? Let China go drill with Cuba! Someone will go get it, you can be sure of that. Global warming does not matter to these companies or countries, sad but true. So I'm all for the US getting to it first because of reasons I already stated.
Great lets let a bunch of folks lose their jobs because the companies they worked for can't get their product to market. This problem goes far beyond people cruising around in gas guzzling vechicles.
Listen, I am not a dem or rep. Do you want to know why they want to do this? Go do your research, ignorant sheep!, CHINA, is going to drill 60 miles off our coast with Cuba. So yeah, I want the US to get it before China starts drilling. Have you seen China's environmental record? DO YOUR RESEARCH INSTEAD OF BEING A DAMN SHEEP. I trust the US more than China's envir. record any day. GOOGLE IT! Then go type into youtube "china pollution"
My gosh, think man! Does oil stay in "one" spot. It is under there in huge pools and probably extends into our territory. We know it is there, they know it is there. I'd rather the US get it because we have strict environmental laws. My god!, China doesn't care about the enivornment one bit! Go look at the videos! I say to the US, go get it before the Chinese do..because there will be an enviro mess if they get there first!
It is another bullshit grab for support, Bush Created the Oil Problems, Bush Comes From Oil, This means when gas hits 10 bucks a gallon people should be allowed to cook their own Methinol from wood, Just like the Nazi of Bushes family tree did when we bombed their main distrubion hubs and refinerys. Hell My Grandfather ran a portible saw mill on Methinol cooked out of wood, It did not stink like deizel and for an old 2 cycle engin its still around.
Mandating cars that have smaller engines would cut total gas consumption in the US by up to 40%. The problem here is a mentality that can only EXPLOIT, not CONSERVE.
I agree, but it is so bad we're going to have to do both; at least if we don't want more economic trouble than we are already in. Maybe if we weren't at war this wouldn't be necessary, and maybe if we didn't have the housing crisis this wouldn't be necessary, and maybe if we had listened to indicators long ago, not becoming psychologically dependent on large cars, this wouldn't be necessary. We can't have our cake and eat it too, even if we never wanted cake to begin with.
Too much people consuming too much of everything.
