  • @grovestreetgman, your right, 7337 is ex-Conrail. The K5HR24 however was added by CSX. It most likely originally had an RS3L.

  • Do you have a video is CSX #4? Love that K5LA!

  • gotta love the horn on those YN3 & YN2 ac4400cw's!!

  • i like 7697's horn. beautiful

  • the K5HR24 is ex-conrail (i think), since 7337 is an ex-conrail C40-8W (high-mounted lights give it away)

  • csx and there horns are gifts from the gods!!!!!!

  • was 5412 at greenwitch

  • Yes

  • i like the horn on csx#4 it sounds like an amtrak horn

  • I love the horn on 616 and 7708

  • Nice catch of CSX 4. Cute to see a class 1 with a single-digit loco number.

  • good shit!

  • I think CSX has some of the best K5LA's!!

  • I may not be a big fan of CSX but you do have to respect them for how vintage they can be.

  • is CSX 616 a AC6000CW? nice squeal there on the horn

  • Yes it is.

  • you can actually tell CSX AC6000s by their paint schemes. that paint scheme on 616 and 682 with the grey background and yellow CSX lettering was applied exclusively to AC6000s. and most of them remain in that scheme. however a handful have been repainted into the YN3 scheme, but not many. lets hope it stays that way, i like that scheme.

  • AC60CW's - my favorite units on the CSX roster. Many of them have been stored, but a select few are still about. You are correct - that paint scheme was unique to the AC60 series. The only YN3 AC60 is the 651. There are also three YN2 AC60's (blue letters) - numbers 633, 666 and 667. 699, 5000 and 5001 are "Diversity in Motion." 659 has a Diversity in Motion door on the engineer's side.

  • oh cool, im not surprised, but i didnt know they had any AC6000s in the regular YN2. thanks for the info on that. but as i said, i hope that grey with yellow lettering scheme sticks around for awhile, because i like it.

  • The K5HR24 horn confuses me with the horns the gevos use. Fantastic Job Richard!

  • They do have a similar sound, but the K5HL that the GEVO's use is a bit deeper, while the K5HR24 has a higher-pitch sound.

  • my favorite horns are the leslie s5t and the nathan k5lla

  • i like the natahn P5's and K3LA's

  • I just heard a reallly pretty and ghostlly sound passing my farm on the UP mainline former MKT it was a RS5T which got my attention because it sounded like the old MKT units I used to hear everyday it turned out to be a CSX unit a former Seabord unit I later found out what a sweet sound and really nestalgic

  • cool! my favorite horns are the beutiful k5la and the charming k5hr24

  • Nice choices. They're mine too!

  • really?!

  • Yes, and I also don't mind the Leslie RS3L.

  • niether do i, in fact the rs5t and s3l are my favorites as well!

  • The Leslie S3K is hated by many, but it is another one in my "I don't mind" list.

  • the s3k can be found on the shortline that runs by my house so ive grown to likeing it

  • @CSXno601 my favorite is the p3, and a good m3h

  • better get used to the Nathan K5HL, I've heard it on BNSF, CSX, NS and UP on virtually all the GEVOs

  • That is the standard horn for the GEVO units

  • these horns certainly beat the crap out of UP and BNSF horns, they sound really bad, CSX and NS have the loudest and best sounding horns

  • BNSF and UP, along with CP and CN, use the Nathan K3LA. Those horns are nice in small doses, but after hearing several in a row, they become a bit repetitious, especially since that is all you ever hear in the west.

  • yeah i dont like cn horns they sound really bad lol. but, doesnt it seem like in the east, we have much louder horns?

  • Seems to me that the Nathan K3LA horn is shrill sounding, as opposed to the softer sounding Nathan K5-series though. All in all, I think the K5's are more pleasant sounding, and echo much better, while still tackling the job well enough.

  • i hate norfolk southern and i love csx

  • yeah we usually have the better railroads anyway

  • CN's most common horn is the Nathan K3H, so it's refreshing to hear an old IC's P5 from time to time...

  • bnsf has nice k3las though

  • Can't disagree here. They especially sound good on the Z-trains at 70 per!

  • classic freight train horn sound I love the sound of these train horns

  • I love the K5HR24!

  • Norfolk Southern ALL THE WAY BABY!!!!!!!!

  • csx horns are sweet i like the CSX eng9ines, my grandparents lived behind some tracks so i hop up there 3 csx tracks shareed with amtrak and 1 ns track. ns horns scare me lol. they are by far the loudest

  • CSX horns Rock

  • Especially those rare Leslie's you get to hear every once in a while...

  • actually they blow

  • is it bad to refur to the K5LA as Airchime instead of Nathan?

Anyways, awesome vid! Pure horn music at its best! 5 stars!

  • no it isnt. nathan is a licensee of airchime, so in my opinion, either one is as good as the other.

  • I like CSX, but I agree, nice horns!! :D Thanks for the appreciation.

  • Your welcome.

  • Are you going to work for them?

  • Norfolkdash9 - if you were talking to me, I plan on working for one of the Class I roads.

  • Yes I am talking to you, and what do you mean Class I roads?

  • Class I railroads - CSX, UP, BNSF, CN, CP, NS and KCS - the largest railroad companies in North America. They are referred to as Class I railroads due to their vast selection of track miles and wide range of loads.

  • Oh ok, do you know which one?

  • Either CSX or NS since I am more familiar with their track, locomotive roster and overall operations.

  • Yeah, and I am in Eastern US where CSX and NS dominate the landscape. I'm leanin' more toward NS.

  • Comment removed

  • Why not?

  • Comment removed

  • You told me that NS is better, and i just said I'm leanin towards NS!!

  • your welcome

  • bnsf has the most K3LAS out there and there worse than csx on the safe part but bnsf is better than csx on the other hand

  • Comment removed

  • This discussion makes little to no sense, but I'll submit my two cents anyways. First off, CSX ranked third in safety and track repairs in 2005 and 2006, behind Amtrak and NS, and before UP, BNSF and KCS in the FRA records. They also ranked third in least amount of wrecks. Amtrak and NS had the least, CSX followed, and UP, BNSF and KCS had the most. Trains Magazine Forums have this information available in a thread, and specific expenses and such are shown as evidence. CSX is good!

  • Ya, but (no offense to csx or csx lovers) I wish that they wouldn't have bought out conrail, I'd come to like it, but other than that, CSX is awseome! 5/5, Great Job!

  • CSX is a good railroad, one of my favorites, but I like NS a little bit better. Here are my standings

    1. Norfolk Southern

    2. CSX

    3. Wheeling & Lake Erie

    4. Burlington Northern Santa Fe

    5. Illinois Central (even though they are now CN.)

  • mine are

    1.csx

    2.amtrak

    3.up

4.conrail cause they had damn good leslies

  • One of the few things I give CSX over NS is their locomotive roster. Sure Dash 9s are good every few trains, but NS really doesn't have much to offer. CSX has the B 30-7, the B 36-7 (my two favorite engines), and the SD 40-2. With CSX you don't know what you will find leading, and that what makes CSX fun to watch.

  • Those B-units are cool to look at, but if you've ever had to work a 12-hour shift in one, you'd change your tune pretty quick!

Check out the video showing the inside of the B36-7 to see what I mean!

  • great job man you did a great job making this video

  • i have the biggest question what does CSX stand for my whole railfanning life i have wanted to know

  • I have heard CSX stands for 'C'hessie System, 'S'eaboard Coast Line and e'X'tras for all other railroads merged into the organization This is according to a CSX employee. If he is right or wrong - I have no idea.

  • but the thing is if it is from Seaboard Coastline that would give you 2 of the letters and the letters are C & S but what about the X. Me and my folks have always thought that it was something like " Central State Express except without the e in front but i am with you here i dont know what it would stand for either

  • Seaboard Coast Line having the 'C' and 'S' does not matter. Chessie System is still included in the name anyhow. As for the 'X', nobody really knows what that means. I believe my understanding of the letter is correct, but not 100% sure. Definitely not 'Central State eXpress." Sorry. :)

  • yea i figured that i it was just a random guess but i starting to thing that the X on CSX means nothing but was put there to make the logo but im not sure as well

  • wait the x on freight cars means its a leased car do you think that the x stands for leasing its possible and csx does partner ship with a lot of shortlines and industries so its possible

  • There is actually a "T" prefix at the end of the CSX designation, signifying it as a railroad, and not a leasing organization.

  • I knew it!!

  • To many of them

  • To many what? Clips? The idea of the video was to have alot of clips.

  • Hate CSX

  • the only thing i hate about them is the damn gevos

  • To each his own. :)

  • Not a single Leslie horn? Boooooo. Awesome video though.

  • agreed wheres conrail when you need it

  • Sorry, didn't have any Leslie horns worth while to put up. I only put up ones that are somehow appealing, and I had no Leslie horns that were somehow special or appealing. I do like Leslie horns though, I LOVE the Conrail ones, in case you thought I dislike Leslie. :)

  • Long live CSX! Let's hear it for the largest railroad company on the east coast!! Great vid...gets me pumped up for my next layout :) Sound and pics are awesome. Thanks! 5/5

  • These recordings are amazing! What recording device did you use?

  • i know of a vid of csx 8787. it has a P3 horn which is rare for csx

  • i love gp30s

  • GP40s are cool too

  • Pengapop, one would think you like GP30 units. :)

  • yeah but dont see alot of em any more the shortline behind my house uses awful rare sw9s with unknown blat horns

  • gp30s are the best

  • I think u meant to say 4 has a k5lar24 and 5 has a regular k5la....u may know something i dont but thats just what it sounded like to me=)

  • I too am not the greatest there is at identifying horns, so I may be wrong. :)

  • lol either way awesome video

  • by the way i was talking about 585 having the regular k5la brain burp sorry haha thats a shame that i cant even pay attention to comments when i make them

  • Well, what I thought was that CSX only used Nathan K5LAR24 horns and did not use Nathan K5LA's. I thought the K5LA's were NS and Amtrak primarily.

  • well they got k5la's but theyre kind of rare...but like i said 585 did sound kind of like a regular k5la but youre right they arent as common with csx as they are with ns and amtrak

  • Thought so. :)

  • its usually easier to tell the two apart once the locomotive has gone by you and isnt coming at you

  • Doppler effect plays a role in that. :)

  • yep thats exactly right

  • i hate gevos my favorites are the gp30s

  • heck, i wouldnt care what it would be paired up with, as long as its in the lead then id be a happy railfanner! haha!

  • Some of CSX's switchers still have their single-chime 'blat' horns. Like a Leslie A-200.

  • yea, haha i know what u mean, when i went up to atlanta, i was right at underground atlanta and here came a single 6000 with a loud k5lar24 echoing, man it was so cool and he was carrying an unknown amount of doublestacks, but it looked like a lot, memory doesnt serve me very well, but once they started derating them its just not cool, but you got to love dem 6000's!

  • The AC60s are my favorite engines! I see them paired up together sometimes these days, but they are mostly paired up with GEVOs unfortunately....

  • from what i heard and ,CSX has now upgraded their AC60000CWs back to 6000hp,all but two which are still waiting for their new prime movers, and later on in the year, they're gonna "ES" them aka ES60AC

  • At 4:38 I taped an AC6000CW with that exact horn!!! Great job!!!

  • AC6000CW units rock out loud!!

  • ya they do!!

  • gp 30s are the shit!!!

  • Great job man! Whew you get a lot of dash-8's where u are huh?

  • No, actually, we get a whole lot of the new GEVO units. I personally find their horns unattractive, so I use my personal favorite locomotives, the AC6000CW, seconded by the Dash 8 series in this video. I wish we had more of them up here, though. :)

  • haha, yea its been a while since ive seen a dash 8 or a 6000, they arent too common where we are, we live in south carolina where all u see is coal trains, and sometimes we'll catch the ns chip train pass through, usually the runs are local using 2 4400s, but today was the first gevo unit ive seen since i went to savannah georgia which was about a month ago.

  • I could certainly take a break from the GEVO units. I am kind of tired of the CSX and NS ones. The KCS, BNSF and UP ones don't bother me much though. But yeah, I miss the good ole days of AC6000CWs pulling all the container trains.

  • AC6000CWs are my favorite too!!

  • Sweet dude!

  • Hey, thanks man.
