  • a very interesting set of videos for 8-ball. keep it going

  • Well if i were you letting any opponent to the table is a mistake. There is no easy safetys in 8 -ball. You had the right idea to take the combo then 12, then the hard shot is 14 to the 9. Once you had that the 15 was easy off the 4 in the side with some draw 8 in the side. Look for a creative out other than a predetermined 9 ball style run. If you lack the coffidence or experience for that run make one ball and safe or the term for failing the run out in 8ball is $hl#ing out.

  • If I felt cagey that night I would start off almost the same but instead of making the 9 ball in the corner i would miss it on purpose and freeze my cue ball up against the green ball or my strip in that cluster. I personally feel if you see you can't run out you should play defense quickly. Nice video again Marcus. You should do more videos with the break and let people express their ideas .. This is fun ! :)

  • With me it's my mood If I feel offensive I cut 9 with half tip right BHE right speed to tap my strip (almost split shot) should push the green ball just out of the way & my stripe should bump the 5 enough & strip would then head slowly for side pocket shot. I would cut that stripe to side Pocket & leave cue ball just a little lower than where it is on the video for the last blocked strip.Cut that with BR now lined up for combo Hit that then cut 14 cue ball rolls for position 8b in corner pocket.

  • cut the nine

  • In this case how feasible would you say it is to try and play low on that sandwiched stripe from the nine and try it to middle? The pocket is made bigger by the purple solid

  • Question: So you're saying the game of pool is not able sweeping your opponent but about playing safe and trying to win with the least risk? 'cause how I approach it is to try to run out every time but of course I haven't even done it once. I mean for snooker it's different. Snooker players aim for a higher break as a way to improve on their game, so when I run four or more balls in pool, I'm satisfied.

  • @hayato10 Everyone has a different style of play for pool. If you want to win, increase your game, and play smart, then it is important to learn how to play defensively if you cannot run out. Obviously, off of a good break you could potentially run the table depending on the layout of the balls (and, where the 8-ball is). It turns out often that even on a good break, something is tied up, but you can usually maneuver you way around shots to get a breakout. BUT BEWARE!

  • @hayato10 If you get down to 1-2 balls left, then you are leaving your opponent with an open table! They can defense you, and make the game hell! Personally, I lose these types of games about 75% of the time. The other 25%, it's up to your opponent to make a mistake. On a bad break, it is always a good plan to play cautiously. It's not always the best idea to run as many as you can.

  • @hayato10 Let your opponent break open the problem balls, unless you see a window where it is a good chance or defensive move for you to do it, while hiding the cue ball or leaving your opponent a difficult shot.

Many old school pool players never play defensively, I have won several times because they try to make unrealistic or difficult banks, instead of playing safe.

  • Just gona say how I would make this rack, there to say if you´re comfortable with long shots start with the seven down to the corner, then get the four in the center and carom the cue-ball in to the (or right in between the) 15 and 3 with rigth speed that would make you have a good angle to get to the one and two to the lower left and with a of either balls follow trough and you should have the last three balls.

  • Marcus, Very well done -- excellent!

  • @BobEnslow Thanks for the comment. Will post another tonight.

  • Great video and analysis, thanks! However, it seems I rarely get to participate in tournaments anymore in which caution ever saves my hide - it seems as if when I do not run out, my opponents inevitably will, and that it's impossible to bait them... But in theory, I agree with you.

  • yet another amazing video. I know I am starting to sound like a broken record..... But Thanks again!!!!

  • I've had a passion for pool for over 50 years. The main problem I see in my students

is they shoot too hard. I tell them make your ball or hang it up so your opponent

can't make his ball and you win the game. They can win a lot of games by using

a center hit on the cue ball and shooting a little easier. Thanks for posting.

  • i would've liked to see you attempt that rack

  • @bobalitos I was pushing my 10 minute limit.

  • @forcefollow Technically unless it's for your camera or another site, YouTube allows 15 minute videos now. Figured you knew, but maybe not.

  • @forcefollow Just thought I'd inform you that the 10-minute limit on YouTube videos have been increased to 15 minutes. :) Keep up the good work! ^^

  • Nice video mate, I play english 8 ball but always find something useful from watching your videos. I also agree with you that it's best to let the other player do the work as more often than not they don't run out.

too many times have i seen players run 7 balls and not get the black, then lose because there are easy snookering options to completely change the game

  • @jodez1966 Thanks for the comment. I really like English 8 ball. There are more and more world beaters coming out of the UK these days. The American Barbox 8 ball game is one of patience patience and more patience.

  • @jodez1966 Many players from other games don't really appreciate the strategy in UK 8-ball. Small table, cramped spaces, and lots of safety play.

  • @bearlikesbeer I have watched it and would love to play it some day.

  • Great video, thank you so much. I would love to see more videos on 8 ball, this is very helpful!

  • agree with most of what you said, however in this example, the stripe ball in the top right cluster should go easily in the middle off the solid ball, any decent position off the 9, should leave that shot, with an easy black into middle after

  • @conostar The way it was laying you would be running in to the solids where you would be depending on a good roll to be good for the 8. Also the angle to the side is really tuff. After I made the video I went back in to try to run the stripes. I got poor position on the 9 and I couldn't bust the cluster or attempt a shot in the side.

  • How about shooting the 9 first and going two rails to hopefully break open the cluster? If you do break it open - easy run out. If you do not - then you still have the cluster for your opponent and the 12 blocks the two solids.

  • @burky417 Shooting the 9 is a possibility, but its a thin cut and you would be letting the cue ball go. The control issue is what would keep me from taking the 9 as my starting shot.

  • I have lost many games this past session by playing higher ranked players who I can outshoot no problem, but I take all the risks and try to be the aggressive player. I have handed over most of my matches like this. When playing a SL3 or sometimes SL4, this is ok. Playing a SL5 or higher will most likely cost you the match. I need to go back to outsmarting my opponent, not just outshooting.

    Great analysis of the rack.

  • @krustin5501 By playing smart I have beat players that are much better than me.

  • @forcefollow A very smart statement. Thank you.

  • @krustin5501 I must agree with you. I to have lost many games by being to aggressive and/or not playing a safety or enough position play, thinking my skill can get me out of any rut. Sometime my logic works but more than likely not. Time to play smarter?

  • Nice vid. Great video quality too.

  • @nimajnebrm Thanks, they will only get better from here.
