  • This is amazing.

  • BEST.SONG.EVER!

  • This song chills me out. Good for the hard times.

  • that picture looks like a vagina.

  • @lilbluehersheykiss have you ever seen a vagina..... im gonna save you the time and say no

  • <3 Innocence.

  • Hi all! This song is beautiful, but I don't think I actually understood what's the meaning of it

    Could you make things clearer?.

  • @pinojerry Well as with most music it's quite open to interpretation, and there have been a fair few different ones posted thruout the comments here.

My personal interpretation is this is a song from a Son to his Mother expressing his love and gratitude for the things she's done for him over the years, that she'll always be in his heart, and telling her to no longer worry about him as he moves forward in his life.

  • @DarkAnxiety This is it. It'a a letter to his mother telling her about what he's been up to.

This is my favorite Iron and Wine song.

  • the picture fits the song really well

  • Beautiful.

  • I've never been in danger of blowing out my speakers from such soft music before

  • White Bi-Polar :)

  • This song always make me want to close my eyes.

It reminds me of the days where I, with my family would take a long drive in the car to this welsh mountain. And on the way, this album would always be in the CD player, and i'd just rest my head and listen to this.

Only now, when I look back do I realise how important those days were.

  • avoid wine when ironing

  • the picture is so beautiful. i like it very much!

  • @ZiNYtwentyTwo Thank you very much. = ) I've gotta say that of all the pictures i've drawn this is probably one of the only ones that actually turned out the way i wanted it too and was ultimately happy with.

  • i feel like laying in the grass under the sun while listening to Iron and Wine :3

  • My friend commit suicide two months ago now. This song popped up in my suggested videos, and I remembered how before he died he said he'd lend me all his Iron & Wine CD's since he thought I would like them. I completely forgot until now, listening for the first time, and am sitting here crying from a combination of sadness and how beautiful it is. I do like it Rob, and I miss you, and listening to this makes me feel close to you, so thank you.

    Thinking of you always... <3

  • i feel really sorry for the replay button...

  • simple picture yet so cool at the same time

  • @SideSpin11 I tell ya it wasn't simple to draw! lol Thanks tho. = )

  • AMAZING SONG ITS FEEL SO GOOD

  • bawl like im at a funeral everytime. beautiful.

  • I love the drawing

  • this reminds me of the book "my side of the mountain" my favorite book.

  • The day Sam Beam dies I will cry and cry and cry. Together lets make sure he never dies.

  • i cried at the dog giving birth in the pantry part :*D

  • Love these guys; remind me of The Offspring

  • awww ^_^ my friend showed me this song like a year ago when i was having a really bad day. It makes me happy everytime! <3

  • (sniff sniff), NO, IM NOT CRYIN!

  • this kind of makes me want to run away and start a bonfire. sounds like a lovely time.

  • I miss my mum

  • I had sex while this song was playing

  • @Smellaknee123 why would u have sex to a song about someone's mother...

  • Not long enough. This song just draws me in...

  • meraviglia

  • i dont understand why some one would have to sell a car to get shoes. mustbe really nice shoes. but this song is lovely

  • @KimbersisBark it´s a metaphor... he is telling his mother that sometimes he tries to do something to please her, but only makes things worst, kinda like buying shoes after selling the car.

  • That's a beautiful picture and the song makes it even more beautiful. :)

  • I used to play this a lot on my crappy acoustic guitar while I was pregnant. My daughter is almost three weeks old and this song always calms her down when nothing else will. She will literally go from screaming and crying to silent and calm the second I start playing this song. She may not be my son, but there is still something beautiful about looking at her, listening to this song, and seeing how peaceful it makes her.

  • This song speaks to me.

  • crying my ass off right now

  • E C G D

  • anyone know the chords to this song ??

  • @lovedaroses i searched and found some on chordie.com but it wouldn't let me post the link..they are there though if you do a search and the chords are really easy. Haven't tried it myself so it could be crap but hopefully not :)

  • @lovedaroses its em7,c,g,c(slide to)d, e/c(im guessing),c,g,a. leave the d and g string open when playing the chords because these are picked open throughout the song. the "d" chord is shaped like the "c" chord but 2 frets higher (cover the 5th fret on the A string and the 4th fret on the D), while the e/c is shaped by covering the 7th fret on the A string and the 5th fret on the D string. i wont go into the picking because thats imposible to describe over youtube, hope this helps

  • this song is LIFE!

  • Jesse Lacey did a good cover of this song.

  • sons are like birds...

  • possiblely one of my favourite songs ever :')

  • The lyrics to me speak of a man that acknowledges how well his mother raised him, and now that he's older she shouldn't worry because she did a good job. This song inspires me to raise my son with all of my heart, to do the best I can, and more (though his smile is the basis of my inspiration). This is such a beautiful song! (:

  • Wow. All I can say is that I wish I could express my emotions through music like this.. Absolutely Amazing.

  • It just doesn't make sense.. that anybody could dislike this.

  • Does anyone else feel like running away to live in the forest a top a hillside when listening to Iron and wine??

  • what album is this frooomm?

  • @DrChillex The Creek Drank the Cradle

  • @DarkAnxiety sweet thanks!

  • This one reminds me of the stuff they did w/ Calexico. Very, very nice song!

  • This song touches me on a level that I still can't understand.

  • @ex3llence That's what she said.

  • Feels like a song to listen to in my car when its frosting over at night in winter, with the one I love the most.

  • Glorious.

  • I haven't even listened to the song yet, but I've already 'liked' it! :D

  • My fiance told me to listen to this, And i didn't want to. But i'm glad I did I lost my mother when I was too young to understand it, and have been trying ever since to sort it out in my head. and this song embodies every feeling I've ever had about that loss. I don't know what the song is about, but it deeply touched me. Thank you for uploading :)

  • @seraph2123 Mothers tend to be protective and repress their sons' sexuality. A rift must be created between a son and his mother for the son to become his own man. It's a separation that is extremely subtle but also very emotionally powerful, and it takes a very mature man to maintain properly. Usually it's too big or isn't there at all. This song is about keeping the separation in balance. The son needs to directly tell the mother to stop nurturing him so he can grow up and have his own life.

  • dead of winter; late at night song....

  • dead of winter; late at night song....

  • this is the saddest song i know. not emo or dramatic or whiny....just sad with a bit of reminiscent hope... what is the saddest song you guys know?

  • You don't know it but you helped me by uploading this video.

  • accidentally learnt it so i looked up the tab and id gotten it right, made my week

  • zombie chords ....

  • song speaks to the soul... btw nice art blah blah blah ;)

  • this song is perfect for rainy days.

  • @MelinGrata and slow mornings without your sweetheart.

  • @MelinGrata This song is perfect for any day.

  • =^..^=

  • I thought maybe there was something about the mother losing a child - 'the creek drank the cradle you sang to'.

And the scene with the puppies, the 'blood on the floor', i thought might have reminded her of it, and that's why she cried til the morning.

Maybe a dark interpretation of it but.

  • @eithnekavanagh But it's your interpretation and there's nothing wrong with that. ;)

  • @eithnekavanagh its an interpretation, but i think its a child growing up and gettin independent, yes, losing a child, but not in that way i think :P i mean, im not judging ur interpretation or anything

  • @afirocks100 That's pretty much my interpretation as well, and i would go so far to say that most people probably interpret the song that way, but the wonderful thing about music is that it is what you hear it to be, and no matter how many people may interpret it one way your interpretation is the only one that can matter to you.

  • @DarkAnxiety yes! u deserve a cookie

  • is t just me or does the singer for iron and wine look like zach galifanakis?

  • Words cannot describe how incredible this song is. Thank you so much Iron & Wine.

  • no kidding when i say that I fell in love with this song at the first second of it... It's all so soothing, and the meaning.... =)

  • all of his songs are great for interpreting yourself, there full of metaphor and passion and thats whats them so brilliant and extraordinary.

  • wow if you stare into the heart in the well, it actually after a while will pulse.

  • @mexicojack1 Oh my God it does <3

  • @MrJackieryanpatton

    That's too cool

  • I dedicated this song to my mom on my 18th birthday. It's so hard for mothers to watch their kids grow independent. I love you mom, always will!!!

  • Lovely picture. Compliments the song very nicely.

  • One of the most beautiful pieces of music that will ever exist. Sam Beam is a gift to humanity. I don't believe in divinity, but Sam definitely makes me WANT to believe. If there really is a god, you are the human incarnation of him or his son, or whatever it may be. Bless you!

  • His voice is so soothing. This is music.

  • This song has so much feeling... I'm always so overwhelmed with emotion when I listen to it, but I can't stop listening.

  • Im usually not one to ever post on youtube. but my mother passed away almost 1 and a half years ago when i was 18. i never really cried as much as i did when i heared this song. it is so beautifull and when i showed to to my fiance she cried as well. she alwayse wanted my mother to be around to help her raise her kids when we decide to have them, i just wish i could play this for my mother now. to everyone who still has a mother now, no matter how hard things get, love them, they deserve it

  • The acoustics from the guitar are so warm. It's lovely.

  • Music with emotion. Rare and beautiful.

  • after listening to a few of his songs im downloading the creek drank the cradle and its one of the best albums ive heard, u dont need loads of band members and instrements to make music. he creates songs that are so much more than full bands could dream of.

  • sometimes i feel so stupid for this, but whenever i listen to this song, my heart starts to beat faster and my breathing gets heavy and it feels like my entire self is caving in. that's just what this song does to you, i guess. it makes you feel.

  • @himynamesSAVANNAH hahah you're not the only one.

  • This song made me apologize to my mother.

    Thanks man.

  • love it its my sons song to me

  • I think this is the 5th or 6th time I listened to this song. I love it. Your drawing is great too!

  • This song reminds me of my childhood. The 90's were the best times! when you had to ACTUALLY see someone to interact, rather than be on a computer...

  • well i said in a video before but thanks to Dianna Agron for showing me Iron and Wine!!!!!!!!!

  • The picture is more realistic than a real heart. The song is something big, amazing. It remembers me '90s. It's quite sad, and, at the same time, it makes me happy!

    Ty for uploading!

  • I think I may be responsible for half of your views on this one...

  • Well i feel i have to thank you all again for the great response i've gotten to my picture. You guys are making me blush so much it's any wonder how i manage not to keep fainting. ;)

  • love the picture <3

  • I love this song <3 beautiful!! :)

  • i definitely love the drawing you made.

  • Thanks a lot for uploading this. A beautiful song again. Interesting change of perspective when you listen it either from the point of view of a son or from that of a mother :).

And yes.. I like your drawing very much, it suits the song perfectly and it adorns my channel right now. Greetings from Holland.

  • This song... this song.... i don't even know. I just know I love it.

  • Wow. I think I'm in love with this song. I haven't heard much of Iron and Wine before but I think I'm on my way to becoming a fan. This is just beautiful.

  • I discovered this precious song and can't stop listening. The way the guitar and voice blend so perfectly together just renders me incapable of explaining my emotions. I feel like this is a song about a boy whose mother cared for him so much that she couldn't let go during some point in his life, thus being a "prison". My mom is everything to me. She has given me all she can, even when she had nothing. Her love was all I needed. I will always love you mom. Tu ne tomberas jamais dans l'oubli. <3

  • Can somebody help me? I'm not quite sure of the meaning to this song.

  • @krissy123123123 Well like most songs it is open to your interpretation, tho most people take it as it is intended: a song expressing the love a son has for his mother.

Within the song the son apologizes for all the mistakes he has made, acknowledges all the sacrifices she has made for him and reminisces about all the memories and experiences they have shared together.

  • @DarkAnxiety (Continued...) and insignificant-in-the-greater-scheme-of-individual-lives. (This is from the image of the mother crying about the puppies being born in the pantry). I thought the song was about how the son tried to explain this reality to the mother, although sensitively, as if regretting the fact that it is the reality.

    What do you think? Possible?

  • @allthatnow I think that's an incredibly interesting interpretation and well worth further pondering. I'm kinda jealous here that it wasn't something that i had come up with. = p

  • @DarkAnxiety Hahaha. Thanks. =)

  • @krissy123123123 Ultimately tho, and this might just be my interpretation, the son is telling his mother that tho he has grown up and she no longer has to worry about him she is still and always will be in his heart.

  • @DarkAnxiety Spot on. My interpretation too. put more succinctly than i could.

  • That picture is beautiful.

  • literally the only song that can possibly communicate the way I feel about my mother.

  • My lady just left me...her favorite artist is Sam Beam. He is one of mine as well. I can't stop listening to him no matter how bad my heart hurts right now...it seems every song explains how I love her. Also makes me understand how much I can't live without her. Damn I feel like I am in High Fidelity right now.

  • hahaha, as of June 17, this video has 1144 likes and 11 dislikes.

    114411 :)

  • Just everything about this is perfect....the picture and the song :)

  • The way the guitar and vocals get to me is truly extraordinary.

  • This is a song to listen to while driving late at night on a dusty, hot highway.

  • @ikelewis678 Or down a green, cool country road. ;)

  • @DarkAnxiety - Yeah... it is a really really versatile song. I can't even figure out whether it is a really sad song, or a really happy one.

  • @ikelewis678 It is hard to decide. I think of it just as a true love song, one that shows really well the complexity of the most powerful of our emotions.

  • So much love in such a simple song.

  • Such a great song. Wow... just... wow.

  • Saw them recently in Baltimore, a very cool show. Sam Beam has the voice of an angel and the beard of a God.

  • Saw them recently in Baltimore, a very cool show. Sam Beam has the voice of an angel and the beard of a God.

  • I love the sound of this. How it practically isn't produced at all. The sound of their first record is amazing

  • i think think the best tribute anyone could make for their mother is through art..i will honor my mom the same way one day..in a book:)

  • this song should make me cry but it just makes me think of all the great times i had with my mom. the best friend i could of ever had growing up. you are trully missed and you will never be forgotten love you mom wher ever you are.

  • Best Iron and Wine song in my opinion. In fact best album too.

  • to lose your mother is like losing the whole universe...

  • i love you, iron and wine

  • Mother I lost it, all of the fear of the Lord I was given

  • Going to the concert at millennium park! so excited!!!

  • awesome song, SO EXCITING !

  • I heard this song last year around September and it would automatically make me break down in tears, especially because my mother was suffering from cancer at the time. I even sang this song to her on the guitar a few weeks back..She passed away on Saturday... it shatters my heart into a million pieces every time I hear this song.. Iron and Wine really knows the true meaning of a mother's love.

  • I felt myself grow old as the first few lines rang out. My eyes narrowed and I grew silent. It was an odd emotion, and I smiled but felt myself choking up. I listened to this song for the first time around 4:30 AM after staying up all night because I didn't trust my subconscious to bring me a good dream. One of my friends had just killed himself earlier that week and before I was in shock, but as it hit me- I just couldn't do it to myself to sleep. Bless Iron & Wine for keeping me company. <3

  • The likes are at 999 right now... I'm about to contribute the 1000th.

  • @umphreak183 1001. :)

  • this song gives me chills for real.

  • So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten

Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I feel like these lyrics could be a message for our world. Children grow up, the world will continue, and hope lives on.

  • Fuck my acoustics final in the morning... I'm replaying this song.

  • Who has the nerve to click the dislike button 11 times...

  • I do like the picture too <3

  • Sam Beam gave me a pick at his show in Pittsburgh last week and playing this song with it gives me chills like nothing else ever could. such an amazing song.

  • this picture reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are i don't know why but i really like it

  • Thanks to everyone for their kind words about my picture. I never imagined i would have gotten such a response.

  • this song makes me want to curl up and cry... or sit in the dark with a sweet smile. Not sure which.

  • @rockxthexhouse123 I think you've put that very well. = )

  • @rockxthexhouse123 yes, thats exactly how i feel too :')

  • @rockxthexhouse123 OMG SAME.<3 hah, but i'm sure all of Iron & Wine's songs make us wanna do that.

  • gorgeous picture!

  • mother, remember the blink of an eye when i breathed through your body?

  • Very cool picture!

  • this song makes me sad, but its an amazing song :(

  • The picture you drew is very fitting...it's like the pictures my son would draw for me...he said we were "Lovey Hearts". He would have been 30 today...

  • @GracieRicker That comment made me cry. Not sure why it got to me so badly.

  • I think most miss the entire point of this song and why mood is so somber and the lyrics almost "random" . This line is why this song was "gifted" to me on the anniversary (for lack of a better term) of the drowning death of my 8 year old son: "Mother forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to...". My friend wanted to "bring hope where it once was forgotten...". Get it now?

  • this song makes me cry

  • this song paints a nice picture :)

  • Do they put their stuff out on vinyl does anyone know?

  • I miss my mom.
