You must be young. Before 1958 there were only 48 states. Then Alaska was added Jan. 3, 1959 and then Hawaii was added Aug. 21, 1959. My father was killed after Alaska was admitted and before Hawaii was admitted as a state. It's rare only because it was only months apart form the two joining. Now we have 50 states.
