This song has been on my mind the last few days when I awake in the morning. I had to find it and listen to it...thank God you posted it...seems this is the only one that is posted...thanks for bringing back such great memories.
This is the version of this song that I remember. It's one of Johnny's best, should have made #1 on the charts but rock and roll was taking over the charts.
Johnny, I remember, was a great showman as well as singer. At the height of his popularity in my formative years, I loved hearing his songs on the "wireless".
That's Al Caiola on guitar - you bet it's great, SirBB! The arranger/conductor on this was also named Ray. But, you'll have to see my comment to angel to find out more since you don't like french horns.
I like french horns, angelofbebop, but there's only one in this, but here's what else is in this: 3 violins, a viola, 5 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 3 guitars, and a harp at the very end. And human voices sounding like instruments. Your 'heavenly' arrangement here was conducted by Ray Conniff only months before he released the first album of his own music.
You can hear the trademark Conniff sound in the first 11 seconds of this upload at the intro. Ray was the best arranger ever ! !
Thanks for posting this I had it in my favorites but it was removed so please dont remove yours I think it was one of Jonnies best I was 16 years old when it came out thanks again
There have been many versions of this song over the years but Johnnys rides high above all others like the Monarchs and the Fortunes.

Brings back a lot of memories for me when I was a kid, I use to play this all the time on my little portable record player. Wow, great song.

Notice, the wonderful climax Johnnie always produced, like Frankie Laine, that made you punch the sky and exclaim "yes!"

What's a 'precurser?'
How can he go 'homeward' if her arms are empty?
I don't understand none of this...
Thank you.
