I've never shot a civilian but i had a buddy who did by accident. when your going through a city with expected hostiles everyone's a possible target. you're jumpy, the lady raised a stick to point at something and she was shot. civilian casualties are a part of war, it happens. i've never known anyone who wanted to kill much less a civilian, i've served with lots of men too.

The video is based on a specificity, not exclusively what the song means. Those who say the actions described in this song are cruel have never seen war: this is just how it is. It doesn't mean any one military is cruel for it, war is ruthless, if it were humane it wouldn't exist It's about all the things that soldiers aren't necessarily proud of but do nonetheless because that's what is required, hero of war is not a word it's what other people see, but not all of them see themselves as.

This song doesnt tell the story of a hero, it tells the story of a man that when given the opportunity to do the right thing-he chose to join in. The song should not be confused with Heroes of War, but rather thugs of war, and the artist should be ashamed for disgracing the 99.9999% of the US men and women who "do the right thing" for our country all the time, every time.

Trust me when I say I get it. I am a literary genius plus I have a comprehensive understanding as to why we capture these terrorist scum in the dark of night.

I can interpret line for line what the song actually says regardless of the intent, justification, or conversations that the song writer had with actual soldiers.

If these events really happened, I hope that some day the soldiers who brought these stories together to the artist reports it and explains what happened appropriately.

I actually kind of like the upside down flag in the video, I think it represents how the American values are lost in times of war. Thats not neccessarily a bad thing, just an ironic thing. A soldier surrenders his liberty in order to defend it, faces moral danger in order to protect morality, its a neccessary contradiction, and in a way the upside down flag represents that, rather than being disrespectful.
