and use a external OS like Ubuntu pen drive then use your backup medium and search threw your hard disk safely . and another thing reformatting your harddisk wont fix everything, did you know theres a file called .recycled? you didnt?, ok let me tell you, Microsoft uses this file to keep the shit you delete and use it against u so when you reformat guess what? the viruses and infected .EXE`s are stored and pop right back up in the new host installation.
huh this is funny you say you cant guarantee anti virus software will get rid of all tha viruses i can guarantee you you cant get rid of the viruses by re-formating the Harddisk!, in fact SOME viruses SAVE THEMSELVES IN EXTERNAL DRIVES so, what your really doing is saying HEY virus infect my harddrive so WHEN i reinstall windows XP and try and Restore my data the virus says WHATS UP BITCH!,
