  • their next video will be,"how to use your hand while writing"...

  • Awsome ending...

  • I don't care what anyone thinks, this guy is good! He may not articulate what he's implying very well sometimes, but that is a small thing. Search the Tube for his performances and you'll see what I mean. He is very talented at not only the guitar, but bass, drums and keyboards. He does each one like it's his specialty, and that is a rare thing these days. These Expertvillage videos are just 101 level stuff for entry level people, and no more. He explains it so it can be understood.

  • Wanna see instant differents? 1:05

  • thank you!

  • Actually Overdrive is a better term then distortion... Distortion comes from a pedal.. but your best metal tones are going to come from pushing an overdriven amp (5150 or a Mesa) With a Tube Screamer.. Oh baby :)

  • @rockme1337 The Tube Screamer is, in fact, a transistor distortion pedal. So, if you're pushing an overdriven amp with a tube screamer, it's distorted before it even gets to the amp input.

And technically speaking, overdrive IS distortion. :P

  • @MehrozeGillani Btw, it's a Fender Standard Strat. BEAT THAT.

  • tnx, its great...

  • What guitar is this? Somebody which has knowledge on guitars please.

  • @Zam0rak41 im pretty sure its a fender strat, really popular. i just bought one

  • @pecky115 this is yamaha

  • Why can you hear the snares on some guitars? Even though they're like pretty good guitars? How do make your guitar sound out of the amp really clear? Thanks.

  • How do you get distortion? Is it like on an amp or... Do you have to buy it?

  • @Zam0rak41 yeah on most amps you can get distorition pedals as well

  • @slashman5 How do you mean that? Explain a lil bit if you would, please (: Thanks.

  • @Zam0rak41 ok so on an amp there is like a little button that you push and boom you have distorition but you can get a guitar pedal there are tons like metal zone grunge a normal boss distorition pedal what kind of amp do you have?

  • @Zam0rak41 it depends on what amp you have. but most will say gain or distortion. im guessing your pretty new to playing guitar, so if you want a good distortion amp to begin with for a while id say look into Line 6 spider iv's. i have the 75 watt. its really good sound especially for a digital amp and lots of good presets. they last a while too.

  • cool video, bro. But... where is "heavy metal guitar playing"?

  • i thought that he's gonna give us tips on settings.......

  • if you want to play metal and you dont know what distortion is, then just put down your guitar and take up competitive knitting

  • @Crouton2008 you have a point there....

  • amazing..

  • distortion makes everything better

  • This guy is good. If you don't see it, then your no good. Simple as that.

  • if ur amp doesnt have distortion or overdrive just go out and buy stompboxes. i got a multifx pedal made by boss for 300 and it has 42 effects on it and it souds great since my amp (peavy vypyr) doesnt have so great distortion

  • @rockndude87 yeah..

  • whats the different between amp and distortion? can't you make this sound with your amp?

  • @GeorgeChucher distortion is a spinoff of overdrive and overdrive tries to copy the sound when u turn ur valve amp too high. Distortion is overdrive but a bit modified so u can get overdrive out of a valve amp, but not really distortion unless urs has a distortion setting

  • everytime i sub i have to sub again on the next vid any ideas its on the same channel?

  • Hey! i have a question, Do i need a pedal to turn the distortion on?

  • DISTORTION! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 x INFINITY!

  • @0458FEO carvin is american not british..

  • you have no any imperfection to hide,

    good job dude

  • woah!! how many guitars do you have?

  • @thepicklezebra distortion means the same as gain. Loook for a knob that reads "GAIN"

  • what amplifier do you use?

  • DUDE WHAT IMPERFECTIONS

  • is that a fender squire?

  • @howler344 i would assume its just a normal stratocaster. Hes too good and has too much junk to be playing a squire

  • @jmcmanj That is definitely not a normal strat, it has 2 humbuckers instead of 3 single coils. But I do agree there is no way that is a squire. Probably a Double Fat or Big Apple...or custom of course.

  • @syntar77 hmm how did i not notice that?? it doesnt have a tremolo in it so either he took it off or he got a custom

  • @jmcmanj you can SEE that those are not single coils ;) if the guitar had single coils, the left pickup would be more diagonal and not straight. further the pu's are to thick for sc's. and last but not least: if you look very closely you can see the typical structure of humbuckers (looks like two sc's next to each other)

  • @JayDi3005 haha i know i can see that they are humbuckers, i just didnt notice that the first time i watched the video.

  • @TheOchocinco55 i wouldnt say that... i was watching these videos long before i bought my first guitar just to see what all you could do

  • hes the only usable man on expertvillage. :D

i mean, listen to his interpretations of the different styles of guitar!

    amazing O_O

  • @richman117 distortion make the sound powerful so you can listen things that you cant listen without distortion

  • @DaPetorian1 He said it CAN cover up mistakes, and not that it is used strictly for covering mistakes up.

  • Just push the distortion button :D

  • Lol, he said if your a sloppy player, distortion will hide imperfections, he didn't say use it to cover imperfections.

  • you can never have too much distortion

  • is it distortion or just a lot of overdrive................a truck load of overdrive sounds better than distortion....this sounds like overdrive............americans seem to call this distortion too for some strange reason.

  • one you this guy looks like seth green! two i have no idea how i got from a vid of an absolute master i.e alexi laiho to this guy! three seems like you have a few other effects in play here so why not just call this vid guitar effects and save on the lies!!

  • @TheRavensBane im sure there is delay there too

  • very bluesy ...

  • @851852093114208513 But does it go to 11?

  • @67uh67 only if your not doing it wrong

  • Best teacher ever!

  • @todeswalzer123 I have head plenty of Distortions that sound like that at the end of the video

  • Wich pedal are you using?

    ( ;

  • @CesarDApolo that looked like a Behringer V-Amp Multieffects pedal.

  • wooohoooo they added a skip option to the start of the vid

  • i only use any type of distortion on stage, i don't practice with it, i don't even rehearse with it. its for the better. im a clean player

  • his amp has so much saturation , unless your rich or have an amazing effects pedal you could never get that sound

  • lol "if you're a sloppy player like me..." you're far from sloppy, too sick

  • @MONSTA01

It definitely helps hide the mistakes you might make. Such as hitting a string/fret you shouldn't be hitting at a certain point.

  • Ok, im not going to say im a huge fan but you need to realize "heavy metal" isn't going to teach you some insane Necrophagist riffage. This guy isn't going to play chunky gallopy string skipping Squealy riffs. Hes going to play chord based slower older style more mainstream music. You cant hate for him not playing or showing something that the video doesn't say he will show you. Heavy metal is Alice Cooper or Kiss, even Zep and Hendrix, although many genres are "sub" to Metal and Heavy metal.

  • @marcblaak i do them on a slant, so my thumb knuckle hits the string, i think it's easier.

  • @Jaydude172

I use the part of my thumb that's just to the left of my thumbnail. Works fine.

  • Distortion should not be used to mask imperfections. Thumbs down on this video.

  • @PowerofJohras and thumbs UP on this comment! ;D

  • whats the best pedal if you like to play music like

    A Day To Remember

    August Burns Red

    For Today

    and etc

  • @thebrianel115 A pink one

  • @thebrianel115

Ummmmm never heard of that music before. But if you get yourself a Roland Cube 80 amp, it'll play anything you need it to.

  • what about pre amp?

  • was that a line 6 pod you used for the distortion?

  • @chickenleg2 i think he's using its counterpart; behringer v-amp 2 lol

  • i thought this video was called "how to play metal guitar", not, "look, i can play cool stuff and not teach you anything at all"

  • @IronMaiden6226 and get away with it

  • 0:26 Omfg that sounds exactly like the intro of Be Yourself by Audio Slave!

  • Is that POD?!

  • can put up a video on how to do that thing you did @ 1:21

  • dont forget about vibrato. most important yet overlooked lead tecnique amongst guitar n00bs

  • I have a question, amplifiers doesnt come with a distortion button?

  • @kakones Most amps have "Gain", which is a distortion... and a lot of amps come with different "channels", like a clean channel and an overdrive (distortion) channel. But lots of people turn to effects pedals and stuff to get the good sound they're looking for, especially if their amps are nothin special.

  • What equipment is he using?! He gets such GOOD tone!!

  • What kind of distortion box are y ou using,, its sounds tight bro?

  • i sware he said ballsy chunky at 0:43

  • @gesiz22 That's exactly what he said.

  • @gesiz22 yea ;D

  • This guy should be a funk, blues, jazz and country teacher, not a metal teacher..

  • Subtitles are pretty pointless for this video but if there was a good deaf guitarist that'd be pretty sweet.

  • @PrototypeC4 i agree and even if he was being a poser, he is clearly talented so let him! :)

  • Distortion shows more mistakes than clean does.

  • @imadey0utube Not really. You can hide a slip-up in distortion, because the echo, scratchy sound overlaps over it.

  • @TheDawg412 small amounts of distortion and your right. but extreme high gain distortion and you realize that your putting a lot more effort into trying to quiet the strings that your getting feedback off of than actually playing. it makes sweep picking and just all solos in general harder because as soon as you take your finger/hand off a string, you get that "scratchy" sound that creates an overwhelming amount of eedback ( at least with my distortion pedal ( boss mt-2 ))

  • @dburn42 you can tyr a noise gate i think it helps me.But i used it by guitar rig program i dont know how it does in real

  • @GostBoo I always thought that noise gates helped get rid of the noise and feedback you get from the amplifier but will it help your soloing techniques

  • @VesperViper i dont think it will help your solo techniques it only gets rid of the sound you dont want.Maybe you can play more free and dont waste time or energy quiet the guitar.maybe it can help that way.I'm faster with noise gate but i use it so less that i dont get used to it.i think if i get used to it i'll play worse without it.that's just a personal opinion you should try and see for yourself.I'm just a newbie at guitar .3 months :D

  • does anyone know a good distortion pedal that can play softer rock and hard or punk rock

  • @derian967 try the blackstar ht-drive, real valve tone and its got a good price for what it is. or just get a valve amp!

  • ROFL if this guy thinks he is sloppy then i would love to hear who he thinks isn't!

  • He uses the same thing for like 3 videos. Does anyone know what that device is. Or whatever. That blue pedal or whatever it is.

  • @deftones133 i think its a line 6 pod

  • @deftones133 its not a line 6, its a beringer V-amp

  • This is probably the only video he does'nt sound like crap

  • hhey what make is ur guitar?

  • What equipment is he using to get that distortion?

  • @417active v-amp

  • LOL THIS GUY LOVES FUNK ALOT.

if you watch his other videos he mentions funk alot lol

  • The funny thing is that if you're playing really sloppy, distortion will actually accentuate a lot of that. In the words of my favorite guitar teacher: 'If you play bad, then turn it up, it just sounds worse.'

  • @kokipWnZ are you using a pedal

  • is he in a band? I see tons of guitarists on here that are good, i gotta wonder

  • cool pinch harmonics bro

  • I think this guy is my doppelganger. WEIRD.We must never meet each other or we will perish. Strangely, I play guitar too.

  • 0:44 The subtitles hide the fact he just said Ballsy... Wow...

  • how about overdriven

  • @TheAAMJR Is more for harder blues and jazz, and lots of over drive is for rock. with an overdrive you can play metal, Distortion and Overdrive over lap alot

  • so what is the best

  • @TheAAMJR for metal a more heavy distortion

  • Nice

  • hey could you make a video using a digitech rp355 please i have one but i dont now how to get a distortion like that you use. 5 stars!!!!!!!! very good video! =)

  • good.............very gud..thankz

  • Are you using V-Amp?

  • yeah, i WISH that's the guitar tone producers put into their radio songs...

  • do you have to use distortion to have that sound effect?

  • had some delay effect in there too

  • yeah, as good as he is, and as sick as the last lick was...... this video really didn't do anything for me. this is more for a brand new guitar player who -might- not know what distortion is.....

  • Metal riffs sounds so stupid without distortion^^

  • @4ntiIvIon

not all of them do actually. some are still nice only you aren't used to it. is a different matter haha

  • @4ntiIvIon kinda..bluesy?

  • @4ntiIvIon Yea, some do but at the same time some metal sounds like classical or flamenco music too!!! Beauty is in the eye,(ear) of the beholder.

  • @4ntiIvIon just change the pcking style and theyll sound good:)

  • @HateCrewGuitarKid Stratocaster

  • depends on what distortion you're using, if youre using like a mesa boogie mark 5 then you have to play clean since every note shines on the distortion, same with other amps. but if you're using a muddy distortion it should mask it.

  • @Overture2152

Yeah, if the distortion has enough bass and decently low treble it'll hide it, but that's just not the style I use. I like clear notes, maybe 'cus I'm more into the solo-ish aspects of metal.

  • well not entirely i've played on a mesa mark V with with Bass and Treble all the way and Mids at about 1 oclock. and i could still hear everything I played. So it also has to do with what amp you're using too.

  • No, I'm a pretty good guitar player.

If you accidentally hit a distorted note, it can make an obnoxious sound, for example, a natural harmonic that you wont get when you're clean.

But I'm also talking about heavy metal distortion, not rock distortion like this video.

  • ok thanks. (Is heavy metal distortion just "more" distortion? Do you just turn the gain up more or is there more to it?

  • Yup, helluva lot more bass and gain. It's also the guitar though, some metal guitars (like mine, Ibanez ADX120) have really sensitive pickups that distortion makes worse.

  • @HateCrewGuitarKid it's a HH Strat, you can get Strats in SSS (which is the most popular), HSS, and HH

  • the distortion handle on electric guitars turn it ON or OFF yeah? If yes then why do we have distortion boxes?

  • its obviously a strat. It might be a jaguar but i idoubt it.

  • clearly shows metal is the best form of music

  • Behringer v-amp pedal

  • He doesn't tell you how to get distortion, but he tells you what its about.

  • what pedal do you use?

  • I think he uses an V-amp 2, I also got it :)

It's more like an Fx box

  • he just uses guitar port...(i also got it)

    funny face -> @(°._.°)@

  • I love your tone. I love you.

  • @jessbpowers Noh, you can play basically anything with distortionamp and it will sound good, that´s kinda what he ment.

  • @Zotz90 but unfortunatly to some kids who may not be very good yet, who dont kno much, it will influence them to try to hide and cover up their mistakes, instead of practicing and fixing them

  • people can use their brain to think for themselves and if they are stupid enough to be influenced in that way its their own fault

  • i think thats the guitar i have to with that whammy bar can you use it like the others videos you have plz reply

  • Depends, theres two types, a normal whammy bar and a tremelo. If you have a normal bar you won't be able to press it down or pull it out like a tremelo. Hope this helps.

  • show he can play to show he knows what hes on about.

  • nahh you dont need an ibanez or esp to play metal, you can do it on any guitar, i play hardcore music with a fener tele, its the player and how he finds his/her tone

  • yeh, you can play metal on every guitar. But you should always have a nice amp too, or pedal. And it's all about what kind of distortion you like

  • @Simon048 you should have at least 1 humbucker for playin metal..high gain on singlecoils(as long as they´re not hum cancelling), will sound grose

  • @Krakthor yeh i've got a humbucker, playing it on single coils sounds bad :/ like there's something stopping the sound

  • this guy is good

  • Btw when he says distortion will mask the imperfections, that doesnt mean that sloppy playing sounds as good as articulate playing... regardless of if you have distortion or not. nothing against Gary Schutt though hes a good guy ha

  • strats can be used for metal. just look at bands like iron maiden

  • What settings is it he got on the v-amp2 ?? someone wich might know?

  • so true

  • what about jimmi hendrix...... -_-

  • he was rock. not metal. he was amazing though./

  • umm its a guitar shape

  • i hate these videos... they make me jealous of their awsome skillz!

  • a strat with 2 humbuckers!!!

  • by the way, I used to use a Zoom GFX-5 as my main mfx pedal. Now thinking of upgrading to a G7.1.. Any advice? Anyone with experience playing both?

Or should I save up the money for G9? I am looking for a Steve Vai "For the Love of God" tone and GFX 5 is too outdated to give me that brilliant tone.

  • i have the g7.1 and i love it there is just so many sound you can make

  • What is the purpose of this video??

All i got from this was " you no longer need to play well.. use distortion to cover up your sloppy playing"

  • being a guitarist is not cheap man ;p

  • i wish could have some kind of a gadget...

its kinda freakin me out to have one of those...

  • is that a line 6 pod he used to change the sound

  • where can i learn the song on 1:08 ?

  • not at all, body shape changes feel and even sound in minor ways. Such as the "thickness" of sound would differ from les paul or strat for example. I prefer the strat shape with humbuckers in it simply because to me it doesnt sound as bottom endy as a LP

  • ok but how do you distort the sound?

can you do it on the amp or do you need pedals??
