  • this songs makes me so sad, im really close to my dad and his dad, my ganddad, just died and i was close to him too:( i really can't bear the thought of my dad dying

  • In their later years, what i appreciate about Johnny Cash might not be his voice, but the feeling and experience he transmits through his songs, his songs and "borrowed" ones.

  • honestly, I'm a big fan of Cash and Cat Stevens... but really, this song is pretty poor. Bad lyrics and song writing IMO. I love reflection and appreciating my mortality, but there are plenty of better songs out there that do that for me. This one doesn't.

  • good version but cat stevens/yusuf islams - original is better

  • I can feel like Cash and Fiona Apple are talking to each other and narrating their problems during their duet part.

"How can I try to explain?", the son is trying to reveal his problems to the dad, but the dad keeps trying to offer unneeded advice.

"When I do he turns away", the son is frustrated that his father disregards his life problems, while the father is likewise frustrated that the son turns away from his advice.

Just a thought at the interpretation.

  • Man, now that I'm all grown up, I can really appreciate Johnny Cash on a whole new level.

And because I have 2 incredible sons, this song hits me on a level so deep I feel it in my soul.

Makes me want to be a better father... a better man.

Johnny Cash is like that. Respect!

  • @bristolcityifcation Stop shouting!

  • @auramac LOL

  • bellissimo...

  • @jewishhardboy it's cat power singing with him.

  • I cried

  • who is the woman singing with him?

  • @jewishhardboy It was his Step-daughter, Rosie Nix singing with him

  • @jewishhardboy It's Fiona Apple

  • is possible to forgive someone who just keeps hurting you. How is possible to ave self respect for youself

  • The thing i love about the American recordings is the sincerity which is being poured into the songs, especially the covers. I challenge anyone to hear Bridge Over Troubled Water, Hurt, or Danny Boy and not get goose bumps.

  • Cat Stevens does the version I prefer I gotta say. This doesnt have the soul behind it.

  • Little drop of tear, it's like my father talked to me.

  • :) Beautiful.

  • Everytime I fight or are feeling down,I listen to this song. I know I am only 15 but this song makes me feel better about my life. I wish meaning music like this was still produced. Also,I believe that Johnny Cash definately did this song justice. :)

  • i never knew my dad, so i look at johnny as a father figure, johnny, soldiers, and the worker. closest thing i ever had at having a father was a my moms old boyfriend, a veteran, a marine, a man who taught me everything i need to know. the same man who told me about johnny,

  • anyone know who the woman is singing the high harmony in the chorus?

  • @WallOfSound1990 Fiona Apple

  • @chucky507 thanks

  • Shut up, Fiona.

  • If I have a child, I will listen this song with him every birthday.

  • J.C. - Jesus Christ

    J.C. - Johnny Cash

    Coincidence? I don't think so.

  • @alisonrenan

my initials are J.C. to, for Joe Caine

    and what about June Carter?

    hmm.....nope no coincidence;)

  • A prophet amongst men ...simplistic but oh so very effective...his voice provides a untranslatable warmth...J.C..is the man.....

  • sometimes johnny just breaks your heart .

  • @bigrider2806 I couldn't have said it better - this is just how I feel. It's clear that Johnny selected the songs he sung carefully, because in every song he sings I can see The Truth clearly...

  • Melhor que a original

  • Isn't it such a comfort to hear his voice? Thank you, Johnny, for working so hard to make us happy.

  • Cash = Legend

  • I prefer Cat's voice in this song, but Johnny's voice just adds such a credibility and feeling of true meaning to the song, you'd almost think he wrote it.

  • yeh i love this guy...elvis ballads Harry chapin...and cat stevens..some singers and songs touch ya heart like no others can...

  • Hey,

This amazing comign from Johnny. Great stuff. Peace

    -MW

  • i love how in his young days he was so raw and had so much energy, and as he got older his music was darker and had deeper meanings. Cash was a true legend

  • Im 14 years old now , but i really appreciate this music , it has a message . I listen to rap/hiphop/r&b mainly but when i'm having a hard time , problems at home and shit you know , i always listen to johnny . I wish we still had musicians like this, most people listen to justin bieber and lady gaga around now . No hate for them though , it's just another kind of music , no need to hate on it . They listen to what they like to hear , i listen to what i like to hear . No need to hate .

  • @angelamogoo You're a good kid. Respect.

  • @angelamogoo You are surprisingly wise for someone your age. Keep it up, this world desperately needs people like you.

  • when i was 14 years old I listen just opera and classical music...i was an Ufo! :-) well done, angela, Johnny Cash is a great singer that make immortal songs...only for "Hearts of gold"! ;-)

  • @angelamogoo Same case here mate except im 15

  • @angelamogoo amen. glad to see such a good head in our youth. I guess we've still got a chance ;)

  • I like how his songs carry messages and I am only 16 not like stupid shit spreading the media today

  • totally beautiful

  • Someone edit that women's horrendous voice out, johnny cash was beyond amazing.

  • whoever told Fiona Apple she could sing lied to her...I've heard walrus heifers in heat bellow much more in tune than Fiona does here...Fiona...you should have stuck to being an over paid voice over for commercials.......

  • @doobeedoo58 Since Johnny Cash chose to sing with her, he probably thinks she's good. According to you, that would make him a liar.

  • Johnny Cash ran into Bruce Lee on a road. Bruce Lee said morning boss.

  • Johnny Cash is the man

  • How honoured would you be if Cash covered one of your songs?? It wouldn't be your song anymore.

  • @Jamieos1990 I'd say this is the sole exception. This and maybe Redemption Song. I adore both versions equally. Man, Apple in this is so good, though...

  • @Spike294 Yeah, I realllly like that version of redemption song though. And yeah, Cat Stevens' version takes some beating. Bridge over troubled water is a personal favourite from the American recordings.

  • @Jamieos1990 Yeah, Cash and Strummer are a fantastic pair. And that is one of my favorites as well! Okay, maybe three exceptions...

  • Wow... I am moved. I love Cat Stevens version so much... but seriously, every cover Cash does, he makes it better, especially in his old age. The most real, personal music ever is just on the American Recordings.

  • @lNameInLightsl why would Cat Stevens dislike it?

  • johnny cash is incredible, this is one of the best songs EVER, and i usually listen to hard metal

  • 4 people should be slapped for disliking this song or just have a daddy complex. Get real this song is amazing and is relative to life. R.I.P Cash! .!.. that finger is for you four!

  • we all miss you Johnny..

  • Makes me cry almost everytime I listen, something about this song just strikes a chord with me when Johnny sings it.

  • @ayatollahrocknrolla me too.. cheers from Catalonia

  • I've never seen a video with this many likes, and no dislikes - says a lot

  • such a beautiful song !

  • i dont like her voice it makes the song worse, cause she has no feeling in her voice. But at least anyone can sing to johnny and if he sigs/sang with its still a good song!

    Adorable person

  • No dislikes. That's the power of Johnny Cash.

  • @FatCaterpillar11 4 dislike it in the space of 3 months...probably cat stevens, ronan keating and boyzone people (excuse my spelling)

  • probably my favorite song of all time... and im a hardcore punk rocker.

  • Johnny is more popular than ever. RIP Your music will live on forever. Your voice is and always will be country music

Johnny, you are the Father of country/gospel music....

    RIP

  • Johnny RIP

  • I'm in the minority but I like Fiona Apple's part.

  • @kmacmuzikmafia27 I'm with you. Fiona Apple is an amazing singer, writer, and performer.

  • @MegaWhiner

    Definitely :)

  • I love Cash as an artist, but that chick killed the song

  • Comment removed

  • Now I know where the Flaming Lips got "Fight Test" from.

  • I love Cash .. No I really Love him. But damn I think i woulda preferred Rhonan Keating to this awful Fiona chick.

  • Great cover, great voices! thank you for upload

  • voice of josephine xD

  • Thank you for this Video - Guys, check my Profile

  • i like what she does with the last chorus. its a shame it wasnt asgood throughout. i wouldnt say she ruined it jus it would be nice if there was a version without her on maybe lol

  • This song is totally killed with Fiona Apple... I'll stick with the original Cat Stevens.

  • Cat Stevens is okee, but what Mr. Cash does with this song is beyond everything. So much feeling that it makes me cry and wish that my father was still around.

  • Imagine if Johnny wasn't old when he recorded this.

  • his voice just got better with age, in my opinion

  • @TotallyAwesomeSocks like fine wine!!

    lol

  • I love them both!

  • On the deathbed was Cash still better than everyone else.

  • It takes some time for the truth to sink in.

  • @GreenGreenGrasOfHome

Simply put, you are right on. Johnny Cash will forever be remembered as one of the few musicians in our time who connected with ANY generation. How many musicians can you say that about?

  • @GreenGreenGrasOfHome of course he was...hes always da best :)

  • @GreenGreenGrasOfHome Dead hes still better then everyone.

  • @GreenGreenGrasOfHome No, he knew he wasn't. That's why we know he was.

  • It was a great cover but I can't help but feel it would have been better without Fiona Apple in it. Her part just seemed out of place.

  • I agree, especially since she seems to switch back and forth from half a beat behind him to half a beat ahead.

  • Thanks so much for uploading this! Best version ever!
