I was an undergraduate at Georgetown University the first time I heard this song.
I was in the basement of Healy Hall.....at that time there was a smoky student pub........times wew different then.....but I had my buzz on....and this magical music came on.........I was swept away................and ever since......when I hear the song....I'm transported once again back to Georgetown U in the summer of '76

can someone please tell me what the lyrics of this song truly mean? Anyone with any background knowledge, I want to be enlightened to its true meaning. Thanks.
Valhalla is the equivalent of heaven in Scandinavian mythology. According to the myths, half of those who die in combat go to Valhalla in the afterlife, while the remaining half of those who die in combat go to Folkvangr, which is essentially similar to Valhalla.
been a fan since 73 when i was 9 and my first album was purchased, but today is the first time listening to his first LP effort, is it only me who hear dylan echoing? thank you for uploading:)
I got this as a Vinyl LP almost perfect condition and the case fully intact for 25 cents three weeks ago. Best 25 cents I ever spent I think. :) It's so beautiful.
I love this song; I love this album. At this time Elton concentrated just on the music and didn´t give a damn if it would be a commercial success. He just sang and played what he wanted. A completeley underrated album.
@HKHK7 its underated because it was his first LP only released in the UK. Elton John was his first US release. Many of these songs he had created starting back in '65 and sooner even. Same goes for his Elton John album. :)
It was, however, released in the USA in January 1975, after he had been more well-known, with his first double-LP, late 1973's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, his biggest success in that decade.
This is where it all began. :) I love the album but it was as if Elton and Bernie were trying to figure out their songs and what direction they were going to go in.....
On the contrary. "Empty Sky" was initially release in June, 1969 probably to mediocre success, that part I'm not all that sure at that time because I was only 10 in 1969 and didn't know of EJ until '72. But I do know with Elton's rising popularity it was re-released in January, 1975 and charted on Billboard at No. 6. So yes, it was very much noticed the second time around. I remember when it came out again, I had to have a copy or bust!
There is absolutely no differences between the two versions, only different artwork. The pyramid artwork was for the 1975 American release of Empty Sky, which was released as Elton John became better-known here. The first album of Elton's to be released in the States was his self-titled album.
haha I love how there are senior dating ads on an elton john song. didn't think he was that old!

My Empty Sky LP had pyrimads on the front. I remember this one. Anyone know If there was any different tracks between the two?

In a class by itself. It's rough and raw, but still brilliant. I used to play this one over and over and over again!

Yeah - Empty sky is a somewhat underappreciated album. My two favourite songs from it are this, and Skyline Pigeon.
quarky2001 2 years ago 10
@quarky2001 It is an unappreciated album and I agree with you about the tracks, although Skyline Pigeon has the edge.
