George VI was the best English monarch in recent history, in my opinion. He led his nation through WW2, with all the treachery of his brother's intrigues and the hardships of that war. It took a toll on his health, which was fragile to begin with.

But he was the man his elder brother was not, and he had a backbone. His reign saw the establishment of the Commonwealth and the end of Britain's colonial period, and he lent grace and dignity to that historical process.
