Ginger root, taro root, lotus root... I'm Canadian and recognize all of that stuff. It's not weird or gross. You can find it all in grocery stores here too (same with fish heads).

By the way, horse meat is ****ing delicious. Its 10x better and richer than beef. Seriously, don't be afraid of it, its INCREDIBLE. I had it in Spain and I've been trying to find it in Arizona for years.
I believe that thing you held up was a root of some sort and I also think that the white stringy stuff comes from a root. But please correct me if I'm wrong.
