  • That's my girlfriends grannie right there... Bloody brilliant, her voice - just as her grand daughter - is amazingly beautiful

  • My condolences, indeed! . . . I can honestly say that touching the hem of this great woman's robe was an integral part of my career in theatre. I know her spirit inspired many. How wonderful that we passed through this world at the same time as this great lady.

  • wonderful indeed ! I have worked with her and it is no exaggeration to say she is the greatest singer-actress in our time, -- an d a wonderful shining person.

What does that comment mean " she has gone" ? has she died ? When ?

  • I made this film with Elisabeth in 1983 - it was a coproduction between Channel 4 in the UK and SVT2 in Sweden.

I haven't watched it for years and looking at it just now reminded me what a supreme communicator she was . And also a delight to know.

The film took about a year to plan, shoot and edit - a year to remember...

  • @tellyprod9

    Great film!

  • @rui04

    Thank you.

  • Thirteen years on this earth, and I haven't seen this until now.

The woman you're watching is my grandmother, and she was exactly what this portrait says she was. I remember the songs she used to sing to me when I had a hard time sleeping... I can't believe she's gone. She's in a better place now.

  • joolo9--Thank You for sharing her with us.

  • My sympathy to you! We are fortunate to remember your Grandmother as a great artist. However, your memories are even more precious; and they will always be with you.

  • @joolo9 Rather, WE are in a better place now because she was here. Lucky you!

  • @joolo9

i heard your grandmother sing live in australia in the mid 1980s - it is a performance that i remember still vividly after all these years - it was an enthralling recital - and i remember the beautiful voice as well as a wonderful connection with the aduience. i remember fondly the nursery songs of mussourzky - an amazing woman - i am so glad her performances live on here on youtube

  • RIP. Elisabeth Söderström (7 May 1927 - 20 November 2009)

  • What a delightful portrait!

  • We saw her last performance of Rosenkavalier at The Met in New York, and she was just wonderful. In a later performance at Alice Tully Hall, she sang a Swedish lullaby, and nearly put half the audience to sleep, such was her effectiveness!

  • A very charming lady with a great voice.

  • My IDOL. She told a lot of funny stories. These are my favourites: she sang with Birgit Nilsson in Der Rosenkavalier. (Elisabeth was Octavian. A young nobleman.) When she embraced Birgit very passionately in the first act Birgit whispered "Don't make me pregnant!"

The other one: she was singing in France for the first time. She wanted to impress. How about saying something deeply philosophical? "Les extremités se touchent!" (which is of course also true.)

  • what a lady! thanks! and, if possible, more of her, thank you: Capriccio? Rosenkavalier? Makropoulos? please...

  • How natural she is - as well as beautiful and charming. Hats off to the BBC for another beautifully presented programme in tribute to a great singer.

  • So charming!! Thank you:) She speaks English like a native - should come as no surprise, I suppose. Still amazing ... charming & a gorgeous voice. Thanks again!

  • More! More! Thank you for this clip. I'm certain many admirers of this great artist would like to see more of this documentary. Elizabeth Söderström, brava!

  • I agree. It would be wonderful to have more of this interview. She is such a great spirit as well as an excellent singer.
