Its not really fake. A Sami person made the song up. Unless shes just singing in gibberish & hitting that drum randomly, then it might be considered fake, but even still a Sami person is singing and hitting the drum so in my mind it is a Sami song. :)
Yes, she's singing in Finnish and the joik is a joke! ;)
The drum is in fact a slightly poor replica from Finland made for tourists who can buy these in miniature, small, medium (shown here) or large versions in various tourist traps.
I know because I got the medium drum as a present some years ago. It's missing a true drum-hammer and some decorations, and is made from machined and glued together wood.
The title Saami song is, IMHO, totally misleading.
To me, as a Finn, this sounds Finnish and seems a mock show. Could this clip be retitled if not removed? Seeing this kind of performances makes me ashamed of us Finns. Even without this kind of fooling around we owe so much to the Sami peoples...
I understand that this is meant to be just a fun part of exchange students' party but I think it is not for us Finns to decide if we turn Sami tradition into jokes.
I really wouldn't make fun of your culture! Really, I've been international student in Finland and I liked so much. I posted this video because, like you guessed, it was part of a trip in Lappland and we liked it a lot, of course understanding that it was only some kind of little and not, for sure, original saami song.
After this, I can't ignore all yours comments to this video, about his not truly song, but i would like to keep this video aviable from youtube, so I decided to rename the video writing what it really is: a fake. It won't to be an insult to Sami tradiction but, only a small memory of my experience in Finland. I hope this solution can meet your approval.
I am mixed blood and diasporic. A video about my culture would likely confuse you if you are looking for a neat little time capsule with sharp edges. You will not find an obedient book store wooden indian saami here.
vitun saamelaiset reservaattiin! ja nuoli kaikille päähän. xanoreita hassista ja hei!

So fake it makes me want to cry. You can tell she's even afraid to use her voice. :(

Well, she is singing in Finnish, not in any of the Sami languages.
The so called Yoik part is not technically Yoik, but just usual singing repetitively loillako-loillako-loillako-loiilaa.
To me it seems the person is a Finn wearing traditional Samish costume.
As far as the drum is concerned, either sound quality is really really bad or it is just a toy drum used with poor technique.
But if you enjoy it, the clip is useful in that way!

Hello skaggio85!
Thank you so much for renaming!
And please let me explain that it is the rights of the Samish that are endangered here, not those of us mainstream Finns.
You know, like if I present Saarioinen 'pizza' as the pearl of Italian food; it is not an insult to my heritage but an Italian might disapprove.
Thank you once again. I hope you return here one day!
