  • i have a 96 explorer too it is the best truck they last forever if you take care of it with maintenance.

  • Tensioner pully or water pump needs to be replaced most likely

  • Change your belt

  • I don't know what the Serpentine belt is, but from my experience whenever there is a sound like that i was told its the belt.

  • Like a puma.

  • serpentine belt!! yes, i have the 94 eddie bauer edition explorer and after i replaced the belt......WOW........it was gone ;) the belt is the easiest thing to remove as far as vital engine components goes. after you remove the belt, check to see if the tensioner pulley is loose or feels like it wants to "fall off" in your hand, that could be a culprit as well.

    good luck.

  • Accepted Solution:

    Camshaft Position Sensor shaft worn.

  • Change your belt.

  • It,s the starter hanging up or staying engaged breifly upon start up...Mine did the same thing and I got under it and coated it up with wd40 and never heard it again...

  • Fender?

  • I have the same problem when its cold with my 98 explorer. Its done the same on my motorcycle I took the starter apart and cleaned it works fine now.

  • Notice it happens right as you start it...starter

  • It,s absolutly the starter...mine does the same thing especially in cold weather...

  • It,s absolutly the starter...mine does the samr thing especially in cold weather...

  • sounds like it could be a loose belt or vaccuum leak. just a personal theory

  • Change your exhaust bearing.

  • I'm going to agree with everyone who says it's the serpantine belt. In Explorers that is an easy fix. On a seperate note it looks like you also have a leak near the front of driver side. You might want to do something about that, a car without fluids is going to fail very fast and have more problems.

  • serpentine belt, or possibly water pump bearings

  • i think your turning signal fluid is low .

  • @lilwiseman lol... that sounds about rite

  • i think your pissing off the squirrels in your engine bay... :/

  • @turbo2449 lmao! awwww man

  • Replace your serpentine belt.

  • Loose Fanbelt?

  • i had the same problem , spray some wd40 or some type of oil on the alternator pulley, then just run it for a min , ittl stop

  • @dodge69874 the awd explorer V8's can have a manual 4x4 transfercase swapped into them from a 97-2001 or so F150

96-97 should use 97-98 F150 transfercases as you'd need the geared speed reader, 98+ dont need it and can use any, but I recommend 99+ F150 as the tone ring in them can be used for the rear ABS/speedometer sensor if you swap for a 9" or 1 ton axles full articles on this at explorerforum

  • its idle pulley bearings, those are known to go bad on explorers

  • fanbelt

  • It's obviously something in your belt system. It could be a few things. A/C pump, Alternator, water pump. Just check and see. Are you losing power to your electronics, it'll be your alternator.

Are you losing cold air or none at all, probably your A/C pump.

Vehicle over heating, probably your water pump.

  • its a fanblet

  • It's a Ford. They all make that noise. Get ready for the engine and tranny to explode. Make sure not to get towed by a Toyota with a sticky throttle though.

  • @assphincter actually the 4.0 OHV engine he has is pretty stout if under powered for the weight of this vehicle. the transmissions are known to go bad on both versions of the 4.0 in the explorer and ranger, but as long as fluids are changed and you dont give it too hard of a life, it will go over 150K before trouble starts.

the V8's have known to go well over 250K in comparison

  • if it is a 4.0 ohv I would it might be a bad synchronizer

  • Idler pully or tensioner, pretty common explorer thing, I have 3 of them and all have had that problem

  • Its def ur starter. same thing was goin on wit mine but it stopped after while. its the starter

  • yea it your starter not disengaging fast enoff same problem on my 4.6

  • no no no they are all wrong dont listen too any of them......it definetly sounds like ur cuhnoooooder valve

  • yeah its your belt. just take some soap and be careful when doin this take it while the truck is running and press the soap against the belt and underneath it. let it pretty much lube it. thats what i do

  • needs new belts or belts need retentsioning!

  • belt tensioner, mines doin it too

  • it's your belt

  • U just killed a Squirrel with your fan belt LOL . jk :P

Nice Ex man, im getting one to a 1997 Limited 5.0L

  • Get one with 4x4 or AWD.

  • whats the difference??

  • As opposed to RWD or the difference between the two? The difference between the two is that AWD is like full time 4WD only that you can't switch between 2WD, 4WD LO, and 4WD HI. With 4x4 you can switch between all three.

  • yeah my dad has the eddie baur AWD and i have the XLS RWD, i like the 4x4 but not when its all the time

  • Yeah, I wish I had one with 4x4. Maybe I'll get a 2005 F150 with 4x4 soon. That would be nice.

  • i want a 2003 subaru impreza WRX, there AWD and basically a rally car haha

  • lol. That's cool. But I need a truck for boat hauling duty.

  • what kind of oil you putin it

  • sounds like your started is not returning fast and hitting the flywheel, or your serp belt tensioner

  • check ur auto belt tensioner mine did that to me one day two days later the auto belt tensioner bearing broke and the belt snapped had to have it towed from way farther then i wanted to and cost me like 600 to fix it it's a cheap fix if u catch it in time like 150 but between towing cost and part and labor it came around 600

  • on the top pulley, (wheel with the belt running across it) behind the fan, there should be a knob-looking thing on it, between it and the fan. Facing your truck, give it about 1/4 spin to the right. start it see if it squeals, keep trying until it does not anymore. It could just be not enough tension on your belt.

  • sounds like one of your belt pulley's it might the one right there in the middle on the top

  • so badass :D
