  • his expressions look way better

  • imagine if yoda had a ninja fight during sw 4,5 or 6. imagine how difficult that would have been!

  • 0:27 and 0:58 for freeze comparison

  • CGI Yoda looks okay, and the transition was kind of necessary considering the fight scenes involving Yoda in Ep. 2 & 3.

  • they both suck

  • CGi looks better.

  • It was a myth that the prequel trilogy has virtually zero changes for the blu-ray release, but the fact is it has undergone some several changes to make it better, including replacing the puppet version of Yoda with a CGI one.

  • The Yoda puppet in Ep. I was made to appear younger than his OT counterpart, and while he did look a bit awkward, I much prefer the puppet to the computer generated character. The CGI Lucas used was not top notch, and while the CG characters are more detailed, they appear cartooney (like Ang Lee's Hulk) and were less convincing than the practical effects. The films would've benefitted had CGI been used only for action scenes (and puppets for close ups), or if they'd used better CGI altogether.

  • I don't understand how people can say/believe that a puppet, a practical effect, looks "fake" compared to CGI. I can understand in some instances where CGI might be more "lifelike," but certainly not more "real" than a puppet.

  • Lucas did the right thing here. That puppet just looked goofy.

  • the blu ray one looks more real

  • The one good change george lucas has made

  • What about Yaddle?

  • CG Yoda looks pretty good, but the facial expression didn't match the dialogue as much IMO.

  • In the web documentaries included on the episode II DVD they brought up a good point about the Phantom Menace Yoda puppet: it is too articulate! The original puppet was very much about performance on the part of the puppeteers because it's range of movement was so limited and as a result the key to expressing the character was in subtle but deliberate manipulation. The one in PM was so advanced and had such a broad range of movement and emotion built into the technology that it always came off

  • The lighting is crap on the cgi yoda.

  • i like the cg version better cuz it makes yoda look younger than original yoda wich he is in episode 1

  • I don't mind the CGI Yoda, just as long as they don't mess up anything. And in this case, they did mess up one thing...THE LIP SYNC.

  • Adding in the CGI Yoda to Episode I is a change I'm all right with for the sake of consistency, but I will admit that there's a certain charm out of him still being a puppet.

  • and this is why george lucas is shit.

  • I'm surprised they used a puppet in the original. He was like the only unrealistic-looking thing in the movie. All the rest looked beautiful. Glad they changed it! But they should've made his mouth move more

  • 1:25 some quite differences

  • Comment removed

  • I'm glad they changed this.

  • The puppet version in The Phantom Menace looks horrible. The CGI version is a bit better but the lip movement is messed up. The best Yoda is the puppet version in the original trilogy! Thumbs up if you agree!

  • @TheThingKing Frank Oz should've re-dubbed all of Yoda's parts.

  • I prefer the puppet version, maybe its the nostalgia talking.

  • first time i watched the phantom menace on dvd i was thinking about throwing it from a cliff; he looked way better in the original series than in that god damn movie. thank god they replaced for the cgi. :D

  • Prefer the puppet. It reminds ms yoda is playful and even though wise he has a naivety about him, in episode V when he meets Luke after he crashes he is adorable.

  • Prefer the cgi but the shadow of the ears is better for the puppet is better because its real - lazy cgi guys - lucas should fire them and redo it again :-)

  • Yoda always looked ugly in TPM.

Question is, which one is the ugliest?

  • I totally forgot about the puppet in Phantom menace!! Geez, this brings back memories, I haven't seen Phantom Menace since it was in theaters probably, so I was about 4 or 5 when I saw it. Damn that puppet looks bad. If you ask me they need to have Steven Spielberg direct a new 4,5, and 6. But I don't think that will happen any time soon so they need to fix it up as much as possible and make Yoda CG in that trilogy as well and get rid of the CG sarlacc beak.

  • i think the cgi version looks better in phantom menace because it looks more realistic and and not as crazy looking like the puppet. this is my opinion no offense

  • The puppet looks better, in my opinion. It makes a connection with the original movies.

  • The puppet looks like a puppet - CGI looks like CGI..... You choose... I choose something which actually looks as if it exists in real life so that I'm not constantly telling myself "this looks like CGI". Puppets can look amazing - check out the 'Vogons' from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie

  • the voice dosen't really match up int he CGI version

  • I'd really hate to be the guy to say anything positive about the new version, but I will admit that the new version does have improved lighting overall.

Color and lighting face lifts are pretty much the only CGI thing I support, unless the whole movie is a digital film (Toy Story, etc).

  • Tricky. The puppet looks real. But it doesn't look anywhere near as much as Yoda as the CGI does.

So my vote goes to the OT puppet.

  • @PeGeProd My vote to.

  • @PeGeProd The puppet in epidode one looked retarded, looks like Yoda's malformed cousin. The CGI makes him look like in the other prequels, which I think is awesome.

  • I can only say that the puppet looks like a puppet and the CGI looks like a CGI. You can call it perfect when Yoda looks like a real living person, like the other jedis in the room.

  • @lightsidemaster lol The Jedi are the only thing in the whole shot that looks real.

  • why do people care about the worst in the series being edited to look better?

  • why does yoda always look angry as cgi?

  • The cgi blu ray version looks way better. The original puppet in the movie looked fake and not real. Plus the cgi matches with epi 2 and 3 of yoda. I thought the movie was better with the cgi yoda.

  • @PusherInc I actually like the puppet better especially during the parade scene where he looks happy. The CGI Yoda during that scene just looks depressed. Like some one below me said, I also think the puppet had a certain charm here that the CGI look just didn't fit and worked better for Episodes II and III.

  • Good changes for the hated Prequel trilogy.

Bad changes for the beloved Original trilogy.

    Lucas...you crafty BASTARD!!

  • For that scene, Yoda showed more emotion as a Muppet.

  • the puppet looks like a muppet

  • @MrMonaco911

The puppeteer is Frank Oz, who did some of the Muppets and also some of the Sesame Street characters.

That said, I prefer the CGI one if only because it looks more humanoid, as opposed to the puppet which looks...well, like a puppet.

  • I'm a fan of the Original Yoda from Episode 5.

The way he looks and acts, i prefer him to be a puppet like the original.

But in Episode 1 i must say the CGI works much better since the Puppet in Ep 1 really just looked ugly, it was not Yoda...:-( So kind of a good change...

The other canges i don't know about, the newly added NOOOO! was not a smart move, and the Ewoks can now blink? I liked it when they could not. made them special!

  • Normally I'd say puppet, but fuck, that is one ugly ass puppet.

  • The only reason they needed to CG Yoda in Ep II and III was because he was flipping around with a lightsaber. I preffered him as a puppet in Ep I cuz he didn't fight. It was refresing to see a younger puppet version!

  • The Blu-ray version definitely looks better. The puppet's eyes just look freaky. It's like he's stoned

  • Muppet anytime. Reminds me of Jim Henson.

  • Blu Ray looks better, i have the Saga and it looks incredible and possibly the best Blu ray available yet!, i hardly care about the CGI. But of course itll piss uber fans off since Star wars is treasured by them more so than Lucas. Fans should check out a film called Fan boys btw, fricken awesome!

  • @SharnOfTheDEAD You know one thing I really liked about Fanboys? When you watch it with the cast commentary playing, right when the end credits start they all admit to really liking The Phantom Menace. This was especially satisfying to me as I very much enjoyed it myself, and find it to be underrated

  • It looks like they copied Yoda from episode three and pasted into this scene.

The puppet actually has emotion on its face. The CGI one may look less weird, but he looks bored and disinterested.

  • It did need to make Yoda look a little younger.

  • @TheCaptainAlmight131 I don't know man, +/- 50 years for Yoda is not that big of a difference

  • 1:02 Whatchu talkin' bout Willis?

  • This video could have just started at 1:05.

  • As long as they don't add a CGI Yoda to the original series, awesome. It makes senseto add a CGI to the 2000 series though, because otherwise you have weird shifting styles throughout the three movies.

  • @Klokinator

    1999

  • @Usul573

    = practically 2000.

  • @Klokinator

But not, it was filmed in the summer of 1997 and released in May 1999.

Words and numbers yes, but if we do those wrong we can't communicate at all.

Maybe I'm just cranky, don't mind me.

  • @Klokinator they did edit 4 5 6 yodas too for blu ray

  • @Klokinator and the puppet looks terrible

  • only good change ever

  • So the kid is the puppet?

  • It makes no difference, I will never buy the Phantom Menace.

  • They both don't move properly to suggest they're speaking... shit all around.

  • the muppet looks a little retarded, no wait a lot retarded!

  • @TheRyanmscott75

He looks awesome and he's funny as hell. Retarded doesn't even work as a description.

  • he seems to be too bright or something, almost green screen looking

  • CG looks really awkward to me.

  • I never realized how much grover comes through

  • This is deffo a good change in my opinion. The puppet works great in the originals but in episode 1 Yoda looks too rubbery.

  • Please, everyone, we've all shelled out so much money on different versions of these movies. Do not fork over any more money to Lucasfilm for these movies. Download the hell out of them, share them with your friends and family, burn them onto Blu-Ray, save digital copies. Do everything you can to undermine a successful release of these films.

  • @pizzamakerILOVEIT Howabout you go fuck yourself with a cactus.

  • The puppet like better I do

  • CGI Yoda looks MILES better.

    Stevie Wonder can see that.

  • Omg I am now a believer... Cgi all the way.

Deep down frank oz probably agrees as he he also a director who would see the bigger picture and much wider scope than just his part.

Ep5 yoda: do not touch w cgi, dagobah yoda is the holy grail

  • I have to agree this CGI Yoda is really nice.

  • The CGI version looks so much better, I always thought that the Yodi in Episode 1 looked terrible and never actually looked like Yoda, while I am not a big fan of Lucas continually changing the movies this one is actually a really great change.

  • Puppet in Ep.1 is badly lit, plus sitting down doesn't help, body moves like the muppet show - Puppet in original trilogy is lit to disguise the "puppetness" :)

  • The puppet actually looks more realistic

  • Nah, the CGI is way better.

  • Both the muppet and the CG version in this movie sucks compared to the original trilogy muppet.

  • @charvelgtrs The puppet thez used for Episode I is actually exactly the same one they used in the original trilogy.

  • @Spongesponger

No it's not. It's a totally different puppet.

  • i always thought that the phantom menace yoda looked shit. I'm glad it was fixed

  • On the dvd version his left eye is making him a total derp lol.

  • ah... as much as I LOVE the original trilogy and the use of puppets and animatronics instead of fucking CGI, I must admit this change seems a little necessary. am I the only one who thinks yoda actually looks OLDER as a puppet in episode 1 then he did in episode 5?

  • @NEScRETRO similar to The Time Lords and Merlin, Yoda ages backwards...

  • @viksox13

well you're certainly wrong there, considering how brittle he looked when he died... unless you're joking, which you must be

  • Aww, I kinda miss Boggly-Eyed Yoda...

  • The CGI one is way better, but in the end, neither have much emotion going on at all when they talk.

  • both look like shit

  • this looks ok and it is the only change that I really like because the CGI yoda is the yoda for the prequels. Puppet Yoda is for the original epical trilogy

  • How all you need to do lucas is get steven blum to voice jar jar binks and i'll be happy xD

  • Now if they only could replace Jake Lloyd with CGI also.

  • @Hefa75 I though he was CG already?

  • Much much better.

  • CGI Yoda looks fucking awesome don't know why you would complain about this one.

  • This was a necessary change. NOW JUST STOP DOING STUPID STUFF LIKE MAKING GREEDO SHOOT FIRST!!! OR OBIWAN DOING THE MOST INSANELY MENTAL SCREAM EVER TO SCARE THE TUSCAN RAIDERS!!!!

    HAN SHOT FIRST!!!!!!!

  • I have to say the new Yoda looks more like Yoda from ESB & ROTJ than the puppet in TPM. Something's just off on the face of the puppet. The puppet looks like Yoda's older brother, Shmoda.

  • I have to say the new Yoda looks more like Yoda from ESB & ROTJ than the puppet in TPM. Something's just off on the face of the puppet.

  • I think that the cgi version suits better with the prequels. they should also fix Yoda in attack of the clones because he seems quite fat

  • kinda disappointed he replaced Yoda with CG instead of Jake Lloyd

  • But will it blend?

  • I. like the muppet better

  • Okay. This change I like. Looks much better and fits well with the other films. I always thought this puppet Yoda was kind of silly for Phantom Menace. But this looks way better.

  • @10191927 CG Yoda looks even sillier when he's in a lightsaber duel.

  • @KenoshiAkai I think a puppet dueling yoda would be far, far worse.

  • @10191927 Having Yoda duel with a lightsaber at all looks ridiculous. He should be at a level of mastery that he shouldn't have to use a lightsaber. In the original trilogy neither he nor the Emperor bothered with them.

  • Yoda Looks like he been smoking some pot

  • Replacing yoda with CGI yoda was a good move.

  • miss piggy with a cold i sound like, mmmmm

  • Hold the front page. George Lucas actually makes a good change to his movies.

  • HOLY FUCKING CGI!!

  • this was the only good change

  • This is the one change of the bunch that I consider an improvement. There was something that always threw me off about the puppet they used for Yoda in TPM. It just didn't look like him at all. I still remember seeing it for the first time on a clip during Leno, Letterman, Conan or something like that before the movie actually released. Looking at it, all I could think was "that's not Yoda". I think that this change was necessary so that Yoda would have a consistent look throughout the films.

  • @taterboob I feel the same way! Still, why couldn't they have just used the original yoda puppet in the first place. George Lucas makes thing way too complicated.

  • Respond to this video...All these changes are so hard to keep up with, and quite frankly they cause me stress. Not a good thing.

  • The puppet yoda in this film looked horrible anyways. Looking nothing like the yoda puppets in the original trilogy.I realize that the Star Wars franchise is Georges bread and butter, but if he wants to continue to profit from the original Star Wars trilogy he needs to stop messing with the films. The originals that came out in theaters were great pieces of art. I only had a chance to see the original films on cable TV in the 90's.

  • Just as long as Lucas doesn't TOUCH Yoda in "The Empire Strikes Back". He does that and I get my torch and pitchfork.

  • @samsullithegenius What of Yoda in Jedi?

  • It's an improvement.

  • Beer leads to Anger, Anger leads to Fish Bait, and Fish Bait... leads to pulling the ears off a Gundar!

  • Looks good. So Lucas was 1 for 30 in his changes in the Blu-Ray release.

  • Don't let blu-ray cloud your vision, yoda is still yoda, Blu-ray or not... you feel yourself slipping towards the dark side... these assholes are ripping you off your hard earned cash for a minuscule change in quality

  • whatever version you watch, the freak on the left of Yoda looks like shit....messed up eyebrows :-)

  • I liked yoda better when he looked completely stoned... hopefully they don't change him in the original trilogy.

  • in this vision mace windu uses a 9mill and smokes weed, also he hates the cops

  • How is it that the puppet is more emotive than the CGI!?

  • GATT

  • definite improvement. in particular eye movement was missing on the puppet i think.

  • Normally I'd go for the puppet Yoda as I'm not that big of a fan of CGI, but this change was better. The puppet Yoda looks weird, I think it's the eyes, the CGI one looks less scary.

  • @Yabuturtle Puppet!Yoda looks like he belongs in the Ninja Turtles. o_o;

  • puppet yoda looks like his totally baked XD!! lol

  • The History of Movies are already fucked up. Why would he change it? It's better as it is George Lucas! Stick to the original and take the dick out of your asshole and redo the Blu-Ray. Just change the color contrast and make it clear. How easy is that! I ain't buying it, even though I've waited 6 fucking years EVER since Blu-Ray existed. I will buy the movie IF it's $10 under.

  • Yoda looks like a stoner on the DVD

  • yea the cgi yoda is better gj george.

    never liked the puppet.

  • I always thought the puppet Yoda looked "Crazier Then Hell"

  • Isn't that the CGI one from A Musical Journey?

  • Unnecessary changes...I say if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

  • The puppet Yoda looks like he's on something, and the CGI Yoda looks like fake and poorly lip synced.

  • I actually agree with the new Yoda. That puppet looked like crap. You can't tell me Yoda changed that much in 10 years.

  • ugh. even more destruction of classic SFX footage. Classic Jim Henson work replaces with shoddy CGI. Though I suppose the Yoda in EP1 didnt look as good as the older ones.

  • That yoda was a puppet, not cgi lol.

  • I like the CGI Yoda in the blu-ray better than the puppet. Puppet Yoda looked like he was stoned through out the whole movie

  • This was the only nessicary change

  • I like this change. But, it would have been better to use a REAL puppet like in Empire.

  • Cool. Maybe next he can replace that shitty kid actor with some more realistic CGI.

  • Hmmm like it you will!

  • how would i sum up everything about george lucas in 3 words, jar jar binks.

    I rest my case.

  • The CG Yoda is much better.

But the original trilogy was perfect the way it was first released.

  • Why did they make the Phantom Menace puppet look so much different than the Empire one?!

  • @PatTheNESpunk my guess would be they wanted yoda to look slightly younger than in number 5

  • @frootofaloom The puppet looks totally different, not just a few years younger. Ah well, just another prequel screw-up.
