They both were the protectors of their teams and they were both great at it.Playfair was probaly one of the toughest enforcers ever but you have to know that O'Reilly was one of the ultimate courageous warriors of all time.
@DontTaseM3Bro playfair is widely reguarded as one of the toughest players ever buuuuuut i don't think he's ever been considered a very dirty guy. He played about as tough and mean as any defenseman back in those days. Don't think he has any suspensions or anything.
No, actually, I didn't even think about the videos and how they figured into the equation, but rather I just grabbed the numbers. There was nothing underhanded about it ... just an honest error on my part, which I successfully corrected.
Removing my original, inaccurate calculations in an effort to minimize confusion, and thus preventing me from receiving reply after reply by those who overlooked the revised numbers.
A preemptive headache reducer of sorts -- yes, I'd say that was a very smart move on my part ;o)
O'Reilly didn't lose many fights; an occasional loss is understandable. Terry fought like a back alley brawler that collected PIM. Once Derek's switch was flipped, just break away and hide -- you'd have been better off. Derek was tough and big ... double trouble. Bobby was one tough customer ... quiet and quick. Pick on the rookie turned out to be not such a fun game. Bobby and Derek were tough; Terry was a lunatic ;o)
@KarmicOmen where r u gettn' ur stats from? I go to dropyourgloves, com (which is extremely unbiased and reliable) They have o'reilley with 52w 26l and 30draws (for all fights on tape). Do u have a site where the fights not shown there are on tape cause i find it very convenient that ur stats have o'reilly winning every fight that isn't on tape (could be a boston based website). Just saying.
So change the fight total and give him 52 + 26 losses = 78 fights.
With wins, losses and draws all being separate integers:
52/78 = 66.7% win ratio
26/78 = 33.3% loss ratio
30/78 = 38.5% draw ratio
All stats recalculated, Terry still doesn't come out as losing "all the time", as you put it,; therefore, that was still a very inaccurate misrepresentation on your part
@KarmicOmen out of 108 taped fights he won 52. Either way, that's hardly "losing the occasional fight". That was my only point.......where did u get ur original stats?
@KarmicOmen yea you're still not telling me where u got ur originaly stats from (go figure). 52-26-30 gives him a 54% win ration for all of his fights. So yea, he won a little over every other fight. In my opinion, that's losing all the time. IF that's not your opinion i'm perfectly fine with that. Then instead of him "losing all the time" he just "lost a lot of fights". Better?
Hey, I'm just using your numbers. The 54% listed at dropyourgloves ... perhaps that is an average % of all win ratio % for all seasons combined; vs a variance % strictly by numbers.
My figures are accurate based on the numbers, and stats and numbers are what I do for a living. Gee, fight stats are far less complex than projecting revenues and gross profit analysis ;o)
@KarmicOmen well u said I had a very "innacurate misrepresentation on my part". I'm simply proving that i don't. If anything, your "O'Reilley lost the occasional fight" is the very inaccurate misrepresentation. Obviously.
Actually, in the end I used YOUR numbers to derive a result -- lest you forget. Look, open Excel and do the math yourself. I will even provide you with the mathematical formulas to run a calculation.
that's what a real enforcer used to be. You wanna stir up shit with smaller players you had to deal with Larry Playfair and get pounded. The game was great when the players like this kept the peace. Now the incompetent Bettman and the corrupt Colin Campbell have made the NHL a laughing stock. Now Playfair would be in the box 17 minutes instead of 5, and opposition players would be stirring up more crap and throwing headshots because nobody knows how to bodycheck cleanly today. Crappy NHL
@mooseman1231 LOL ..... oh, thank you -- I haven't laughed like that in quite a while! Playfair is top 5 all-time with Wilson, Gillies, Brown, and Brashear -- at least in the era of 1980 - 2000. O'Reilly is....... not
now your making me laugh because O'reilly was credited as one of the most effective enforcers of his time and made the top 3 so i laugh at your bullshit
@mooseman1231 made the top 3 of what? Recipient of the most shitkickings? I give him credit for having as many lives as a cat, though, because Dave Richter, Clark Gillies and Behn Wilson actually killed him in fights. No human could take those kind of vicious beatings and live
actually he made the top 3 in fighters of his time on a couple lists and on another few he was in the top 10 second he won a majority of his fights and beat clark gillies 4 out of 5 fights so i dont know what your talking about. and again is credited as being one of the most effective enforcers in history so you are obviously just jealous of him because he didnt start trouble but he sure did handle it well good day. :)
@mooseman1231 not in the playoff series I watched. Gillies repeatedly pounded O'Reilly and that helped the Isles roll through the Bruins on their way to the next round. Nobody had a winning record against Gillies other than Behn Wilson.
then you need to watch the ones i saw this guy has posts on youtube and it goes from round 1-5 O'reilly took the first 3 fights, gillies took the 4th, and then O'reilly took the 5th
@mooseman1231 If ur talking about a list of enforcers who could actually play the game, then yes O'reilly would be high on that list. In terms of pure fighting, O'reilly is not better than playfair. If playfair lost, it was big news. O'reilly took a ton of beatings. Not saying he wasn't tough but Playfair is probably top 5 ever. O'reilly is nowhere near that.
@khav11 they were both defencemen and very seldom met up. Wilson didn't fight any more often than he had to, and guys didn't go looking for him unless they wanted a beating. Playfair was a stay-at-home defenceman and policeman more than someone who went looking for trouble. I'm sure they'd have had some great fights -- I'd favour Wilson because he had a better chin, but since Wilson is #1 all-time you can pretty much favour him over anybody of this era in their prime -- maybe even Dave Brown
@justice008a dave brown was a savage pure a-1 specie and was bigger than wilson/stronger but wilson is
was simply the holocaust of the nhl in the low 80s. both in my top3 with playfair who was a meatgrinder for sure as shown here he kicked oreilly sorrys ass couple of times
@justice008a Behn Wilson didnt loss so many bouts, its his biggest plus IMO.
Wilson had a draws with Probert, Jonathan, Gillies( both dude scored one victory over each other as their Round2 goes narrowly to Gillies for landing best punches)and i think Wilson got Pletts, Clarks, Howatts, Frasers, O'Reillys, McSorleys, Semenkos and he lost to Fotiu, Wensink ...no many losses.
larry was a bad dude, he loved kicking bostons ass
