Sorry, but anyone who thinks this sounds like early DM or early Dave is quite simply … well … delusional, really! ;-) Wrong drum machine sounds, and also not a preset pattern, wrong synth sounds that doesn't match DM or 1980 well, and way too high pitched and far too detailed vocals for Dave back then. It's a definite no go.
@tie32101 As I've said before the title is mine as there was in fact no title provided. It said on the cassette Depeche Mode 1980 Demo. The cassette was not a DM tape either, it was a compilation of various bands from the late 80s or early 90s. some bootlegged, some 12" remixes etc. Personally I do not believe this is DM..
Yeah. Not Dave singing. Not sure who this is. First clue: this dude is a tenor. Dave is a bass/barratone. It's cool though. Think I'll go listen to some Pulp now. :)
No way is this DM. No chance in hell. Anyone who can't tell, don't know DM. There's plenty of early stuff to compare it to, and neither music, lyrics, sound, production style or vocals match in the slightest.
@choralone Fucking Crap?? This is the best song ever written and it probably is DM and OMD and John Foxx all playing together in a synthesized orgy of 1980s bliss......ye big bollix!
@choralone I agree, this is not Depeche Mode. The vocalist is atleast 1 octave below Dave Gahan (then 1 octave above). The production and soft feel is definatley early 80's. You have to remember the limited ammount of sequencers on the market back then made most band sound a little similar. It was bands like Depeche Mode, Yazoo and OMD that reallY personalized those sequencers and produced music of huge importance.
Well...it doesn't sound like Dave Gahan or Martin Gore with what I know of their range and capacities, especially when it gets to the higher parts, BUT maybe? It is a cool sounding song that had more potential than was allowed--since it didn't seem to make it to the radio waves...but how cool that you have this. If you can identify who it is, you could check with their agent to see if they even know someone has it and if they would be interested in releasing it?... :)
@MrSmartgirl06 Ah it could be anyone. I'm not going to take the name off it now as eventually someone will identify it. I actually like the tune myself but I was never convinced it was DM per se. I thought maybe it could be related to them somehow but all the hardcore fans are giving me loads of stick and saying its definitely not them. I agree with them now. The original tape was a mix tape with loads of other acts on it and some other demos from the Bad Seeds and Julian Cope etc..
@Zelwoldemar I haven't a clue at this stage. It was given to me years ago and it was listed as an unreleased DM demo from 1980 on the tape. There was no song title though, I assumed it was called What Do I Get? I think it sounds very Vince Clark-esque
it's not john foxx and you'd know if you'd heard him singing. sounds like some of the newer "tribute to" bands that cover dm songs. this is definitely not a dm demo, the vocal range it totally different from Dave's voice. But, it's a nice song anyway...
this was way so long ago...before they made it big....Im sure once they got signed on...things changed fast....Ive loved them since 1981 :)

I am sure it is David Gahan with Dm. The lyrics and the sound is completely fit to the world of Depeche Mode. So it is a real surprise. THX a lot.

@ANGELS79500 No one told me..
BaronVonPenguin 1 month ago
I don't think it's Dave Gahan's voice even if it looks like a little (Dave sings a lower tone).
It could be the voice of Jarvis Cocker... Why not an early Pulp song?
But what a beautiful song! Thanks! :D
