lol we use to have beach day with our great dane club. jacksonville greatdaneclub. com i am the co-president we have about 60 great danes. imagine all of them in one back yard running in circles. its AWESOME! i highly suggest all dane owners get in a great dane club.

My Moonie Dog had a blast on the beach but being only 5 months old at the time, he was too frightened by the water to go in. Instead he was more happy going about saying hi to all the beach combers and running himself ragged. LOL - He slept the entire 4 hour trip home!

Of course. If Dane got a hold of it then yes. The problem is Danes aren't terribly fast so He/She would need to get a lucky bite to get hold of the lion.

I never take my Dane off the leash,the people that live around me let their dogs run around causing havoc and fighting with other dogs. I dontlive in a bad neighborhood its just the people here dont take responsibility for their dogs, I even have to put a muzzle on mine because of the other dogs.

Well, you have to look at it this way: You may have trained your dog very well, but you have not trained him/her in case those loose dogs get too aggressive with him/her and THAT reaction from your Dane is something to look for, however, I just think it's because of its size that you are forced to muzzle it. It's like a doberman. A doberman could be fearless but playful with other dogs, but people only see the reputation of the dog in general - not the dog itself. Doggy discrimination - lol.

Our harlequin acts just like this at the lake shore. He loves to chase other dogs in and out of the water. When he was a puppy, he had a bad habit of repeatedly dunking smaller dogs under him, so we'd have to intervene to keep him from accidentally drowning another dog. He won't swim at all, though!

An exBrit I have had Danes for years, still have one Mantle. So nice to see so many uncropped Danes. It's so barbaric to crop their sensitive ears. They are the true gentle giants.

There are dogs and then there are Great Danes. I'll never have one -- I'm a single woman, turning 60, it's not gonna happen -- but God I love looking at them. And there's nothing cuter than a Great Dane puppy. OMG!!

A pup can cost up to and even more than $2000. But if you're really serious about getting a Dane, you should look for a Great Dane rescue society in your area, and try to rescue one. I have two Danes, both rescues, and they kick ass!

@marinero5 A dane that cost 200$ has back yard breeder written all over it. AKC papers don't account for any health issues that come from the parents and the rest of the lines. AKC papers just mean you have a pure bred dane. Papers are probably one of the least important things on your list when it comes to chosing a dane pup. So the money you saved is not something to be proud of.

@Nessasbeach I have 1 great dane and 1 APBT. Great danes cost about double the cost of keeping a medium sized dog. More dog food (we go thru 50lbs every 2 weeks), higher vet bills (frontline alone is nearly $120 for Emma, our great dane). Shots are basically the same, maybe a little extra. Spaying/nuetering is RIDICULOUS! $250 to spay Emma (most of that was the anestesia). Plus you have to consider how quickly they grow out of colors (we went thru 5 the first year). But totally worth it! :)

@Nessasbeach Adopt one. Do. You will be definitely be a happier person. We adopted one, she is just amazing, giving sooo much fun and love. All dogs are great I think, but Danes are special. The costs are higher, but it should be okay if you keep her in good shape. Forget all the very expensive dog-food, you don't need that. Inform yourself well in advance. But do yourself a huge favour and adopt a Great Dane! Let us know. Hi from France

please check the local human society first. its like 50 bucks most of the time, and if the dog has problems that you didn't know about, they usually take care of the cost. alot of great danes wind up without homes because people don't think that they'll get as big as they do. so it wont be 8 weeks old and cute, but if thats why you really want a dog, then you shouldn't have one any way.

It's a lot of fun to have a bunch of Danes playing. I used to belong to a group of Dane owners who'd get together for outings like this. We'd have up to 40 or more Danes playing at once. Funny enough, sometimes Dane owners would coincidentally wind up at the same off-leash park at the same time, too. The most I've ever ran into was 8. Two of mine + another person with two, and the rest from only-Dane homes.
