For those who love Elite and would like to play it today you have several options. I have two versions installed. One is the Atari ST version running on the Steem emulator which is great fun, the other is the updated copy (remix, re-make, modern realisation) of Elite called "Oolite" which is almost identical to the original game but has much improved graphics. Both are brilliant, both are free, and both eat up huge parts of your day.
safe, bah! 'best' docking method.. race in from opposite side, screech to a halt, flip 180 and burn straight back in lining up at the last moment.. my reactions were better when I was 10 though.. As for Eve, it's ok (preferred it in the old days) but it doesn't match Elite simply cos you can't manually pilot in the same way ;<
Elite was the best no doubt. But I could never dock the fucking craft.I loved in nonetheless. Oh and another thing... Never believe what an MP says, especially if his name is Ed Balls!!! Fuck sakeeee.
Yes! I remember that. The first person to call the company (a phone number was provided) and could prove that they were Elite would win a cash prize, right?
We assumed that a code number was provided once you reached that level, or something. My friend spent hours scouring the disk with a sector editor to see if he could find what it was... what a dorkus :)
I proudly say I made the Elite status THREE times! On C-64, on Amiga and Amiga Close Encounters. Took two years of my life (total playing time), lost 2 or 3 girlfriends and barely saved my first marriage. But I've made it!
And nothing realy happend. Just one more "Right on, Commander", and in the status you see Elite. But that's not the point:
I was young then, and when I played, I WAS LIVING THERE. Lava, Zaonce, wild systems... And I kicked ass!
Thank you. But I never saw myself as a badass, just Commander Jameson settling the scores :) And you're too humble - if you made it to Dangerous, you're competent enough. The rest is just a psychosis :-)))
Hunred games here too (I'm 48). And I lived in a few of them. All of X-COM/UFO series, Hidden & Dangerous, the stunningly beautiful Homeworld... but the Elite is like a first love.
Wow, that's a pretty fast docking computer. I had the IBM/PC compatible version and docking took ages! I used to wait until it had me lined up, then disengage and power in at full speed.
I must've have left a trail of Coriolises with hull paint scraped all over them.
Head toward station until it appears, then stop. PERFECTLY center view on planet and roll ship until station is at 12 o'clock. Repeat until it's perfect. Pull up & aim for exactly halfway between station & planet. Roll so station is on left, planet on right. Speed up. Watch radar & switch to left view. Slow down near station, stop when station is centered in left view. Switch to front, roll ship and pull up so station is centered in front view. Match rotation & fly in.
*IF* you have a docking computer. If not, you need to know how to dock manually. Personally, I found it easy enough in the Amiga version, that I never bothered to buy a docking computer. :)
@lurkerrekrul Nah. Seriously safest docking method is approach front of station and positon ship directly in front of the docking port, then come to a stop. turn to face very centre of docking bay and wait till it is almost level (don't rotate), then engage full forward thrust.
Nothing worse than after an epic long trip surviving battles barely, only to crash on the station :-)
i had the C-64 version of it and man did i hate to got killed on the entrance of the station, was another hard challenge after those fights ,made it so much more worth to trade your goods and earn your credits, millions of hours of fun, frustrations and excitment
Anybody else ever bought a better weapon before a docking computer????

Thumbs up if your automated landing computer ever smashed you into the station killing you.

You are not a geek unless you've turned down sex to play Elite. It's on the purity test.

I actually prefer the C64 version to this!

The Speccy version rewarded you with a big screener saying "ELITE" in gold on the screen.
Does anybody remember the competition that was on when Elite came out, it was on a flyer in the box when you bought the game ?

Well... Ironically the competition was out of date by the time I got the money saved up to buy the game lol !!
Your friend was keen if nothing else ha ha !

Everybody has to dock without the computer in the beginning. Its not THAT hard.
securitysystem 2 years ago
The difficulty of the docking as you say isnt that hard but there was differences in the difficulty between the different versions.
For example the speccy version was easier than the electron version.

That's awesome, dude... full immersion into a game. Gaming Nirvana. I've played hundreds of games in my life, and I've only been there once or twice.
I lived there, too. But in the Elite universe, I was a non-descript upper middle class guy, and you were Donald Trump. :)

And I thought I wasted lots of time doing the speccy and amiga once ha ha !!
It's one of these games that has set the benchmark for space sims ever since in magazines when you read about them.
So If you are younger than your 30s you might have missed this game.

I think it was Lave rather than Lava.
And there was another world nearby called, errr...what was it? Reorte?
KaitainCPS 2 years ago
@KaitainCPS
They were called Diso and Leesti.
Reorte also exists but is a bit further away and a quite dangorous system.

@DoctorrDread Triple kudos on achieving Elite! One comment tho: Maybe the two or three girlfriends was what jeopardized your marriage...

@DoctorrDread It was a great game. It's what started the serious space game saga.

Did anyone actually make it to 'Elite' on this game? Did anything special happen?
I made it to 'Dangerous', but I must have killed hundreds of people beyond that and could never move up.
Elite was awesome... the first and still one of the few truly open, non-linear games.
You've all played Oolite, right? It's a remake. I'm into that right now.
Paul19807 2 years ago
I went and searched for Oolite 'cos of your comment. Thanks very much...it is damned fine...

I'm just about to get involved with this oolite that my mate has been ranting on about.
Some of the extras that was missing from the original for some reason e.g. the generation ships etc

Elite is certainly one of the greatest games ever made; you have to respect a game which has the Blue Danube as music whilst auto docking is engaged!
Drwhofan1971 3 years ago
Easy manual docking;

Or sloppily approach the station, go toward the entrance at full speed and at just the right moment, start the docking computer. Geronimooooooo! ;-)
