My personal favourite interpretation of this piece so far. Smooth, emotional, accented where it should be... simply flawless. Especially in 2:52 , where other violinists tend to make the sound as quiet as possible (to have time to get the tune properly?), he attacks it with confidence. Incredible! Simply splendid!
I don't really people who write "don't like",what they wont to listening from an musician,he has all ,beautiful musicality ,great sound, fantastic technical parts. If was Vengerov was certain they put i like.Bravo maestro!
to the two top comments... 1st most concertos are actually improvised by the soloist. the backing orchestra isn't but when it comes to the section for the soloist then everything he does is off his head. and 2nd... pretty sure the best musician there is a man... so yeah
The audio quality of this video leaves something to be desired, unfortunately. That doesn't mean that this isn't a great song, it just means the audio is lacking.
@cellosnake From what I understand about Asian culture a dude as a professional musician is somewhat of a joke. (unless you're completely amazing or in a leadership position like the conductor here). I know this is at least true in Taiwan, not sure how it translates to Korea though.
@Will61421 It is funny that now I recall all the piano teachers that I had lessons with and knew of were all female. I never realized that until it is pointed out here.
what a genious. one of my friends had his former teacher, and his teacher said that stefan jackiw is truly a genious and that she had never seen a more gifted violinist. my orchestra teacher also used to be in the same orchestra as him, and she said his paganini concerto was fantastic, and extremely unbelievable considering he was only fourteen years old...playing paganini. wow.
There is a video of Frank-Peter Zimmermann which made me feel very much at home so to say listening to his sound as this indeed sounded very 'German' to me, like the sound I've heard so many times in German music schools, utterly familiar, maybe not always elegant but good craftsmanship, maybe very sober but very deep and - most important in my opinion - a sense of how demanding and rewarding it is and not how passionate and flawless and perfect it can be. I don't want to sound pro-German btw.
Ok, second attempt (no, I can't give scientific proof :) : if someone grows up in a kindergarden in Germany, every now and then singing German folksongs - for popular collection check "Mundorgel" - together with more or less relaxed teachers, typical German mood or temper, together with a few other mostly shy boys and girls, growing up in an environment where music is regarded as something very personal, more intimate than competitive, the approach to music might sound different.
Listened to it again now after months and indeed it is a flawless performance very light and poetic. Apart from this it's unfair to judge someone by a video, anyway.
Personally, I believe the orchestra slowed him down. I can feel the performer wanting to increase the tempo towards the end, but the orchestra (in particular, the winds) held him back. Other than that, I love his tone.
It's brilliant technique, but to me sounds like passion by design, well planned and practised but I'm not getting kind of linked to the performer when listening to this. It sounds nervous and stressed to me, some Europeans might say it sounds Asian, maybe. To me it does as well but in fact this doesn't matter at all. Music sounds different in different places somehow. Thanks for posting it's an awful lot of work to work on this.
There is a certain temper or way of learning technique and a certain approach to music which I can't really describe for now but I can say for sure that picking 5 students from music schools (not universities) in Germany and picking the same number of students from a music school in Asia it is not very unlikely to hear a difference between the two groups. There are subtle differences, it might sound absurd but quite a few musicians would recognise it every now and then.
ok. not a very scientific explanation though. also, your theory only holds true if the (asian) student in question is trained in an asian institution? what if like stefan jackqiw, he/she is asian but trained in a western/european institution?
He's amazing, I've seen him in concert. He just plays so passionately, it's really inspiring to watch him perform. Not to mention his technique is nearly flawless...
Ok, this is a sleeper. I've heard of this kid but not much. The first minute or so of this piece is right on the top level for me- with Stern, Chang and Perlman.

As a violinist...This is a perfect rendition.....
As you plainly see he is at one with his instrument...note his body language also.
Joshua Bell has the same intercourse with the instument and their technical abilility that produces parfection.

doesn't require, but if Jackiw wants to express his emotion this way, then it is doubtful that you're in a position to criticize.
