I believe it was Neon Philarmonic . At least they were the band that I heard singing it first. Their version is vastly different to this version as it sounds like it has a synthesiser as backing. It was in the late 60's that the song came out and the synthesiser was a big deal then.

Had the Lettermen Capitol LP for long long time.., don't seem to find it now. This is the best track. Perfect vocal and romantic lyrics. Think Jim Pike is solo. @musicluver1958 Sorry to break the bad news, but it IS a competition. Woman are the majority in most colleges, with that education comes high-paying jobs and power. I no longer offer seats on a bus to a woman, who may be earning twice as much as me, or competing with me for my next promotion. I'm not bitter, just a realist that the power balance may be shifting in favor of women. Take off the rose-colored glasses that never looked good on anyone anyway.

I have this by the Neon Philharmonic on the original 45RPM record. I've always just loved it. Never knew there were any other versions of it recorded.

The original 1968 version was a hit and is still the most perfect version ever recorded: Fresh, but mature lyrics, to go along with a fine melody and perfect rhythm. Not overproduced. Can't we do better than the Lettermen and Shaun Cassidy?

I would have to respectfully disagree..I always liked it a lot-I loved the sentiment in the lyrics, which the Lettermen version captures so perfectly. The Neon Philharmonic version, while very good, was produced to be a pop hit.
