Thanks for the translation although I am quite familiar with it. We all get so caught up in the beautiful music and the performances. Unfortunately we forget to give proper credit to the Lyricist, Luigi Illica.
These words are his. He was a great writer and poet who wrote lyrics (librettos) for Puccini , Giordano and others. If one knows Italian and takes the time you find some pretty amazing and beautiful lyrics in some of his opera collaborations
It is so incredible that Tosca was never one of Madam Callas' favorite roles. Yet Maria Callas makes Tosca come alive throughout her performance. It is chilling to hear Callas voice as she denouces Scarpia while he slowly dies. Thank you for including the English translation throughout the various scenes.
I am quite serious, and you appear to be a condescending young person who has yet to earn such sententious grandiosity. You do understand it's pathologically grandiose to insist you're right, when it means so very many others must be wrong? But maybe I'm wrong -- tell me what experience or training puts you in the position to make such judgements and flippant insults -- complete with outworn and cliched metaphors like tarnished pennies and gold coins -- other than your own subjective tastes.
@manthasagittarius - Unfortunately you have made this personal - I was giving an opinion concerning

The whole exchange is personal to you. To quote your last post:
"If you prefer a tarnished penny who is to say you are mistaken it's your sense of value" -- a transparent personal crack behind the disingenuous platitude of "each to his own." So don't whinge when someone sees past your supercilious critique and reads you for what you are -- one of those who derides what's beyond him for the chance to play at having superior judgement.
critics have put this recording of this popular opera as the best ever recorded.Of course look at the cast, but a lot of credit went to De Sabsta,Story has it he was not happy with Callas Vissi d'arte at first and had her in tears until she sang what you hear here,Now we are in tears when we hear it!!!
46 years ago, on the 5th July 1965, La Divina gave her farewell presentation in Covent Garden. She sang "Tosca". This is the first opera she sang at the beginning of her career in Athens in August 1942. She will remain unforgotten.
CubanReal- She was famous enough for the average Joe to know of her because of the off stage shenanigans -love affair - firing etc. not her singing . She was
undeniably a "personality "It is stupid to think a difference of opinion must be born
of bitterness when it is but an observation different than yours . Again try Podles and Souzay and come back to tell anyone that Callas remotely can enter their world of singing and artistry . People must have mirror image heros .
@dziady1 This is not a very sensible opposition to set up, and I think you're the one who is mistaken. Some great artists are also celebrities, with flamboyant personal lives, and some are not. Would you make the same facile judgement about Bernstein? He was no less a character than Callas was. We have what they left behind for us -- recordings of their gifts.
As to Souzay -- whose singing I love -- I would rather hear what he himself would say of her. I think it would be admiration.
@manthasagittarius you're not serious =Souzay was a great artist serving the music -Callas was
all about serving Callas - she could play "diva angst " as no other -all that fake passion and angst ,one would
have to have a heart of stone not to laugh. She was always Callas in any role she did, only the clothes changed .Comparing Callas to Bernstein - is comparing a tarnished penny to a gold coin . If you prefer a tarnished penny
who is to say you are mistaken it's your sense of value .
@dziady1 important enough to have Tyne Daly play her in a Broadway musical about her life! important enough to be a recognisable name even to someone who is not knowledgeable about Opera. And to attempt to belittle her "audience" with a reference to Judy Garland falls flat (pun intended) - Judy garners the love/respect of many people in the United States and the world and her career speaks for itself. Now take that bitterness elsewhere...
This is absolutely gorgeous I like the 1958 version too. But this is it for me.. The decrescendo on the A flat and G is not done by another singer who sings this. But Maria.
Anyone knows where I can buy a video of the whole opera. I mean, this specific version.
Aloha

First -she is not important enough to hate
for any reason .2nd. old enough to have heard her-there are many superior singers
one still singing in the twilight of a career "from 1970s Ewa Podles "- talk about
the greatest singer !!!!!Callas cleverly
engaged the public imagination & at one time had a fairly passable voice which fell apart early on ,then she became a "drama
queen "with an opera audience similar to
the Judy Garland crowd .All amusing . Try
Podles and Souzay for great singing .

@dziady1
First of all, how old are you? second of all, who do you think is a superior singer than Callas?
Your hatred for Callas, the most influential classical singer of all time and the only true Assoluta voice of the last 100 years, is ridiculous.
