What does a compresser actually do? I'm kinda new to electric effects

A compressor compresses sound so that it never gets too loud or soft, it just kind ot keeps the same level. And a Phaser makes that constant shift in tone like a wah pedal that is always going. And in case you didn't know what a Wha pedal was, it changes the tone when you rock it back and forth with your foot. Back for low tones, and front for high tones. Hope this helps! Any more questions, don't be afraid to ask!
