hi i'm matt and i started my garden this year but i have some insects like ants and i dont know what to do about them if you have any ideas or solutions i would love to know. thank you love the gardens by the way very nice.
I really enjoy your videos. hubby & i started sfg last year. he was laid off from warehouse position in construction job Dec 2008. We learned so much about sfg in 2009. learned how to can. hubby still hasn't found full time work so we've decided he will go into semi retirement, work part time, work the sfg and babysit our 2 granddaughters. I work full time., but we enjoy spending time together canning produce.
It's been great fun watching your videos...Composting is a great idea...A combination of compost and worm castings keeps my SFG happy and productive. But yours are WAY prettier :) Looking forward to season 2!
Hi Donna! I love all your videos! I have probably watched each of them 3 times! I just built my first square foot garden this weekend and can't wait to get started - I have learned so much from your videos and hope to make some of my own! Thank you for being such a great SFG resource - it helps a lot to watch someone elses experience. I can't wait to see all your videos this year!
Nice video series. I thought about trying some vids with my garden experiments. I'm so far behind with my gardening tasks though, I'm afraid to spend the extra time on vids.
Hi Donna, Love all the videos. I have the best composting method for you.WORMS!They turn your kitchen waste into the best compost ever and quickly!Can-O_Worms is the worm bin I have and love(it was a gift) but you can make your own(with rubbermaid containers stacked ontop of eachother). Tons of info on the internet..a good book I can suggest is "Worms eat my trash" Thanks for inspiring me to get back into my garden SWFlorida gardening is tough!I'm used to Ky gardening.Hugs to the family! Lynn
Thanks for sharing your videos, I have really learned a lot from them. I am starting a garden this year and have been growing some plants from seed. We started our beds over Christmas and are finishing them now. I'll need to fence our garden to keep the deer and other critters out! I look forward to watching your videos this year. I have even thought that maybe I should do similar videos to yours simply because the Midwest is different and others might learn from them. Thanks!
That would be a great idea to do a regional video. My climate is soooo different from most others in the US. I am just glad to have inspired you to start your own SFG. Did you buy the book, All New Square Foot Gardening? It is excellent and I HIGHLY recommend it!
What a sweet sweet spirit you are.. thank you for allowing everyone into your life and sharing this gardening experience.. We had our first SFG the season before last. It was great! We loved blue lake green pole beans YUMMO and tomatos.. MY goodness! our cukes got that SAME bug your did! You've inspired me to try again but we need new materials since ours didn't last. What kind of wood are your boxes made from? God Bless your harvest this year! ~Angel
Thanks so much for watching my videos! I used a vinyl house trim, it looks like painted wood. I was afraid to use real wood because of termites. I also did not want to use treated wood due to the chemicals. The Square Foot Gardening Foundation website sells a variety of precut boxes WITH THE GRIDS. They are also economical. Happy Gardening!
I watched all your videos from last year in preparation for my first garden that I am starting. I am in Cent Florida, zones 9a and 9b, your videos have been very helpful. Thanks! Looking forward to what you have in store for this year too.
Have you tried anything during fall and winter? I was quite successful this winter with spinach, bak choi, daikon, and broccoli (sprouting now). We only had a few nights below zero, love FL weather, but fear coming summer heat!
I am so glad my videos have been helpful! I have had good luck with kale, brocolli, red cabbage, and the spinach is doing great (now). The summer heat can be brutal...I need more shade! Never thought I would say that!! Happy Gardening and thanks for watching.
LOL...probably not a good idea for the bird bath, but I just can't resist! The old birds that bothered my garden last year were the big black birds, which completely ignored my bath. We'll see how it does this year. Also, there's not much prep work involved in a square foot garden, I just use my hands to mix in some new soil. The soil mixture is very loose (check out the book "The All New Square Foot Gardening" for step by step info!)
Great Videos!!!!! I missed seeing you hope you had a wonderful winter. Can you do a video showing what you do to prepare your garden after the winter to get ready for the Spring? i.e. Do you "roller til" your soil, what soil do you add to it, if any? Also, I see you have a bird bath....I thought we should be trying to keep birds out of the garden.
Hi! I am probably going to use a tumbler. Any suggestions? Also, I tried vermicomposting last year. It worked well for a while, and then all sorts of reptiles found it...and ate all my worms! I still may give it another try...not sure yet.
Nah no real suggestion. I do mine in a pile and use four pallets for walls to keep my dogs out of it. Having a tumbler would make turning it easier though. I've been thinking about giving the vermicomposting a try.
@dylan14570 The only thing with a tumbler is that none of the natural compost good stuffs and insects come up from the ground....but it does seem very neat and tidy :}
If you decide to try a root vegetable Sweet Potatoes are great, easy hardy and if you're a spinach lover the leaves can be used and taste like spinach and they won't bolt.
I love your outfit!! You look so adorable...

Donna, Ohio girl here, enjoying your vids. I'm about to build a few of my own.
On the tomatoes that you were cutting off, with new growth on the bottom. How did those turn out.

Hi! Thanks for watching! The tomato cutting worked great! I kept getting tomatoes after I cut off the main stem! Happy Gardening!

What method are you going to use to make your compost? A tumbler, a pile and cold or hot composting? Have you read of vermicomposting?
Thanks for the updates. I enjoy your videos.
