  • I just ordered this tool. I ordered it because its big and heavy. I have a knockoff and it sucks. None of the blades lock, I feel like I'm going to cut my finger when i try to use the blades. Good review, it helped me make my decision on which leatherman to get.

  • I'm getting this for free from Club Bing (:

  • Good Review packrat556.

  • your sound is a bit low. i am thinking about buying the surge. what people don't realize is that the surge is a heavy duty class multi tool as is the crunch, core, and super tools.

  • Yesterday, I bought this tool for $ 200. Arkhangelsk, Russia =)

  • @MrRubix29 200$ for 100$ tool? Did it was smuggled through a communist controlled border? LOL.

When local price are that much inflated it worth order it online. You could have save lot of money.

  • @newtubetubetube we have a very bad mail, cannot come. in Moscow, on the central mail can substitute for the parcel. Weight is the same, but inside the brick-=)

  • Just went to eBay and ordered one ,can't wait , I payed $91 and it comes w the bit set

  • Thank You for not doing a rambling review. Well done! I own the leatherman mut and now I want the surge.... Just wish the wire cutter was replaceable.

  • Hi where did you get that for 40

  • o.0 40$?!

  • Whered u get it for $40?

  • 40$???...netherlands..132 euros.

  • i think it will become my work edc blade...love the fact it has 2 sharp blades and a saw...i used the saw yesterday...worked great on a 2 inch limb...i am waiting for the new sidekick to come out ..it looks like a great edc ...and has a pocket clip

  • I just got home with my new surge.. What a beautifull tool . Time will tell if it replaces my spyderco endura..probley not but it will be a great edc for work

  • just broke my leatherman fuse

    eyeing up the surge now

i cant live without a leatherman so i need to get it quick!!

  • @miniman631 doesn't it comes with 25 years warranty ?

u may claim for it maybe..

  • Ya where did you buy yours?

I also want to get one

  • great vid im thinking of buying one and where did u get one for 40$?

  • 40 $ ...!??!?

this price you can get the micra here in germany.. if you are very lucky.

  • Where did you pay 40 bucks for it?

  • Nice video, to get the proper measurements with the ruler you can just squeeze the two sides of the ruler together

  • $40? I just bought one, on sale in black oxide for $109.... wow man

  • I think the weight issue has to be tempered with the value of the tool in different situations. This is my EDC Leatherman and I have used it everyday in the near four years I have owned it. The saw, fine edge and scissors are perfect for outdoors use which is why I always call it my "outdoorsmans'" Leatherman. The Wave is great for EDC and I love it too but I carry this for the outside accesability of the saw and scissors.

  • He's not saying it is heavy to him, He is stating that SOME people may find it heavy WHEN COMPARED to Other Lighter / Standard weight Multi-tools. And he is correct, some people may find it "heavy".

I myself think it is perfect, especially if you have big hands like I do. Makes it much easier to work with rather than some of the small tools. Plus it packs more tools, larger blade size, And it is much stronger built construction.

  • Hey Great Review PackRat, thanks for all the info. You got a heck of a deal with that price! I just ordered my Surge as no store carries any in-stock here where I live for some reason. Only one store had a display model, which I would have bought but they lost the additional blades & drivers, and they still wanted double what you paid! I think it will be a great survival tool.

  • It seems like a great tool! I have one question: is the blade exchanger sturdy?

Because the file and the saw are tools I use mostly, and with no finesse. So can the blade exchanger take the daily "abuse"?

  • That was a great review. I bought the Surge because of the strength it has for working ,if I need it in my back pack or Bug out bag. Thanks for the good work on this video!

  • Its not heavy! Grow some muscle!

  • Yeah... I was looking at this one, but didn't realize it was 12 (twelve!) ounces. That's a LOT if you aren't used to something that big. I would recommend most people look at something like the Wave model instead which is ~8oz. Actually they have ones that are closer to 6oz that probably perform 90% of the tasks as the bigger models. Really consider what you would ever need or want to use it for. If you have a lot of money then their really large models would be great for a car or something.

  • this tool has spent 5 years on my belt its used daily and well ive even 4got it was there and went to the airport with it WONT DO THAT AGAIN not fun but i feel naked wen i have to take it off and have even used it to break a window on a car that was flipped on the high way

  • it sucks balls, good idea but worse assembly ever, rattles and leatherman service sucks, they say it's "normal", i will never again buy a leatherman and i'd rather chew through wood with my teeth than using my piece of crap surge

  • did you realize that the can opener has a wire stripper in it...usefull implement

  • What the hell is a "multay tool"? Did he mean "multi-tool"?

  • this is full mettal for a multy tool it is heavy but the built in screwdrivers break easy

  • @jackhillbilly Odd, I've had the Surge for years and never had any problems with the screwdrivers.

  • @Chefblackstock one of the really small ones just snaped of ang the the one u can change the piece that holds it in got bent somehown and wouldnt hold it in but other than that its goo

  • where did u find the knife for tht price

  • I ordered a black oxide Surge, can't wait to get it! I compared it to the Wave and Super 300, but the Surge is better for my needs.

  • THANK YOU i watched every vid in ur channel they are amazing spectacular im shocked from all the things you taught me

  • Two questions, please. Where did you buy this for $40? Since Leatherman comes out with new versions of their multi-tools, is this one the latest model of the Surge and if so, what is the model #? Thx.

  • Love the American accent. Great review!

  • Blade looks beautiful but I think its just over 3 Inches so Illegal in England =(

Really annoying because I love the look of this multitool (Probably wont stop be buying it thought)

  • WHERE DID U GET IT!!!

  • When I saw the bit exchanger, I was like, Oh, man. A true multitool. I really like this model.

  • should i get the surge or super tool 300

  • is the supertool 300 better than the surge?

  • In person is this really shiny like the pics in the website?

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting this video. This looks like it will hold up and be useful in a welding environment. My previous multitool, a Gerber, was destroyed by a powerful magnet.

  • love your videos, i know you dont mind constructive comments so heres a thought..if you do a product review and want a good refrence for displaying sizes of objects other than your hand, try a dollar bill, i learnd that in crime scene photography. everyday object that all can identify with.

  • awsome vid man i have a review watch it its new so please say what you feel

  • that's really cheap to compared what they ask for a multi-tool here i currently own a Gerber tool and have been thinking of replacing it and i will certainly keep an eye out for a leatherman surge and chek it out thx for the informational video

    and keep them coming ^^

  • LOL 40 dollars, here in the netherlands at the cheapest place it's 178 dollars!

  • i have an original leatherman, and apart from the design, and the new locking mechanism, the tools haven't really changed that much...

  • i have one of these. its great.

  • where did you find it at that price?

  • Well those people are at fault for ordering something they didn't thoroughly research. I bought a Gerber Diesel and every review I saw for it was outstanding but the knife blade on it is extremely sharp but very narrow and pointed first time using it the tip of the blade snapped off was very disappointed. I do think I will be purchasing one of these Leatherman Surges. I also like that it comes with a leather sheath.

  • what is better to own this or a swiss army knife

  • @20GATE91 Swiss army knives seem to be somewhat smaller but I think multi-tools like leathermans are easier to use and have pliers though they are kind of bulkier.

My opinion on what to get is obvious though based on the fact that I have 3 leathermans (my favorite is the wave) and gave away all my swiss army knives.

  • the next week i gete this babe!

  • should i get the charge tti or the surge? money is not that much of an issue, im just not sure which is better. im looking to get one pretty soon so anyones answer will be apreciated :) good review btw

  • Why can't you say "Multi" properly? and the Surge is not heavy!

  • $40 bucks? STEAL

  • Loving your videos!

  • Most excellent review!! I use to carry the Surge and love it. Only problem is that it was too uncomfortable when using the the outside blades so I got a Charge ALX. If Leatherman would put titanium or aluminum scales on the outside of the Surge it would be the ultimate multi tool.

  • Which are the best / differences among Leatherman

    Wave

    Charge AL

    Charge ALX

    Charge TTI

    ???

  • the differences are like this:

steel on the main blades goes up from wave to TTi. AL and ALX fall in the middle with the same steel.

ALX and TTi have a gut hook, although many ppl see them as useless, also both have the wire crimper.

ALX also doesn't have the scissors and the large flathead screwdriver, but has one more large bit driver.

Wave comes with fewer included bits from the start and doesn't have the removable pocket clip.

  • one more thing that is maybe a typo is that when it comes to weight the wave is the heaviest and the TTi is the lightest, with AL and ALX being in the middle. but the difference is 0.2 oz or 10 grams so it's really not a really huge thing.

Considering all these factors Charge AL would probably be the best buy, especially if you're not set on having that gut hook.

Now all of this info was taken from leatherman's official site.

    hope this helps.

  • @urkingod the only differences are the handle materials. al=aluminum =alx aluminum oxide tti=titanium

  • The Charge are all the same in quality its just the tools and handle scales change with model along with better steel with the blade compared to the wave. So If you have the money go with the charge if not go with the wave.

  • $40 damit is that a typo on that price tag

  • i also have the surge, and have had it for little over a year now. i love it. it's too big to carry in a pocket, but its great because i can put it in a tackle box, take it to a gun range, or anything else i need it for.

  • I need some advice ?! Wave or surge ? witch one should i buy ? is the surge really that heavy and bulky ? is it a big difference in quality between surge and wave? im stuck and i dont know witch one im going to pick so pleace help me ?? I love fishing and bushcrafting so i need a good multitool ..

    Peace!

  • @markeii check out the charge. it's basically a middle between the 2. surge is heavy and can really handle a lot of things, but most ppl consider it inferior to the core or supertool 300.

the quality is, or should be exactly the same, only the tools are different

  • oh and if you don't need the one hand opening blades, and other tools that are on the outside you should check these models since they basically are a more classic replacement for these:

fuse is classic, while wave is one hand

blast is classic, while charge is one hand

supertool 300 is classic, while suge is one hand.

note that actually core would be the classic equivalent of surge but it's discontinued and now it's supertool 300 in that class.

the classics are cheaper than one hand openers

  • Thank you for the info .. helped out alot ! I got my self a wave last week and it´s great !

    Peace!

  • no problem. just enjoy it

  • I have the Surge swapped around the knife and file and made the tool for a left handed. Yea its big but its like having a tool box and use almost every day. Mine was on clearance for 58 bucks should have bought both.

  • Thanks for the review.. Just picked one and noticed that the scissors are loose!

Any one had the same problem!

  • @nroc13, the "best" multittol to own, is the one that fits your personal needs the best. If you need a diverse, rugged multitool, the Surge is, in my opinion, the best. and it can be purchased for under $70 if you look around. If you don't need everything under the sun but don't want to settle for a mini/keychain tool, the Leatherman skeletool is a really cool choice. i do prefer Leatherman by far when it comes to multitools, but there are offerings from Gerber and such that are good too.

  • $40 damn you :P I watched this video to try to find out where the Wire Stripper and Lanyard rind is. The diagram shows it inside the handle.

  • I just found it in the directions but what about the wire strippers?

  • I just found that too it is on the Can Opener/Bottle Opener.

  • Nice review Packrat. Does the surge have a concealed keyring in one of the ends as well like the wave? Cutlerylover showed in one of his vids it had a hidden keyhole on his wave. thanks.

  • Yes it does.

  • Hey great review, I'm sure you've figured it out by now but for the ruler part of the tool you can actually close the pliers and the two sides of the ruler fit snugley together. I got the wave myself and I'm wishing I would have gotten the surge.

What do you think of the Maxpedition Vulture 2 I have that as well. Would love to see you do a review on it if you could.

    Thanks,

  • Leatherman is a wonderful brand, I've used it myself, but I'd pefer a victorinox multi tool over it, I don't mean to offend any leatherman fanboys out there

  • ebay i got a $80 wave for $48

  • what is the seraations (spelling) for?

  • i love my surge i got it today i dont know why people say its too big? to me its just heavy enough to know its there witch to me is a good thing because i dont want to lose it

  • NIce vid; where did you buy it?

  • lol that stinks

  • Its used thats why he got it so cheap...

  • hi. hi have a surge but while using it at work, i accidentally dropped it.. then i noticed that the scissors lost its "spring back action"... what should i do to repair my leatherman surge? thanks

  • what store did u get it from!!! 40 bucks?? good deal!

  • I bought mine for 45 dollars on sale at Wal-Mart. That's where the red tag on the box is from. I'm a Leatherman loyalist and this is the best one I have ever owned.

  • After using it for some time now since making this video, I can honestly say that I like the size and weight. For me, I prefer a tool that is comfortable in my hand and has the girth to work with. I like things that are built solid like this tool. Thanks for commenting!

  • what in the world i put the surge in my pocket and forget about it it dosent weigh that much.

  • I guess it just depends on individual preference. I am glad I chose this model b/c I agree, it is just right for my purpose. Thanks for watching!

  • @PackRat556 is the weight really that substantial? I carry the wave currently but need to upgrade for the blade exchanger. Others have warned that it was just toooooo heavy to carry as an everyday carried knife. really need your opinions on the leatherman surge.

  • This is the best one from leatherman pliers, in my opinion.

  • I have become quite fond of this tool as well. Thank you for sharing your opinion. I appreciate your interest!

  • I use the original Leatherman on a daily basis and I can't say enough about it. Just from watching the video I can see they vastly improved the original design. Its especially evident in how they rounded the edges so it doesn't dig into your hand when you use the pliers. The scissors look fantastic too - I know exactly what you mean about the crappy small scissors that come with most multi-tools (and my leatherman is no exception.)

Thanks for the informative video, PackRat!

  • Absolutely! I am happy to share. when I am going to invest in new gear, I always like to research it so that I purchase the right things. I appreciate others who share their information and opinions as well. This helps us all out. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • The Surge Rocketh. Rather ironic, I think I have used the can opener more than any other attachment, and threw out my rotary can opener in preference of the Surge, its that good.

  • Interesting! I can't say I have used my can opener at all yet. However, I am glad that I have one because sooner or later, I know I will need it. Thanks for watching!

  • things are 120$ in canada :/ can't decide between the surge or the wave(99$), I like the fact that it comes with detatchable saw/file, if it comes with the file too, you could take it out and sharpen the blade with it which would be a huge bonus.

  • If you needed too, that's true. I think both the "wave" and the "surge" are excellent tools and you would be pleased with either. Hold them and pick the one that feels best. It should last you a lifetime!

  • $40 is an insanely good value

  • I agree! Thanks for watching!

  • were did you find that for $40?

  • A while back Wal-Mart redesigned their knife counter and when they did they discontinued certain items, this was one of them. They liquidated these at very low prices. I was just lucky to spot it at the time I guess. I was very thankful!

  • i want to get a leatherman multi-tool for EDC but i am not sure of which to get. I have checked out the Wave, the surge and the juice ....... i just can't make up my mind . Could you help me ???

  • I can't say much on the Wave or Juice, but I carry the Surge and I love it. There are great features and its easy to use. The one negative on the tool I will say is its weight. The weight is noticable on my belt. Deal breaker? Depends what you normally carry.

  • thanks for the reply,

i was wondering though, which would be the best to carry in your pocket ????

  • For the pocket the Juice. Thats a good one as well.

  • Comment removed

  • Great choice imho.

I do use a gerber suspension sometimes that is pretty light but well constructed and pretty useful.

  • I agree, I have a Gerber ripstop which is very similar to the suspension and I like it. It has been a great tool and other than a small blade, I have no complaints with it. Thanks for watching!

  • you should get a wave not to big not to small

  • I have looked at the wave and was considering purchasing it but when I saw this for 40 bucks, I couldn't resist. Thanks for watching!

  • damn $40?! wish I could find it for that price :)

I EDC a Leatherman Skeletool, but have been thinking about picking up a Surge for camping, hiking, ect. Good review.

  • I got lucky! You will enjoy it if you do get one, I think it's an excellent tool, I have used it quite a bit with no complaints since making this video!

  • Thanks for the review!

Just thought I'd mention that there is a little hidden lanyard ring on the surge hidden inside the well for the saw/file. To get it out you need to open the saw/file and push it straight out from inside with something like a key until it pokes out the rear of the handle.

  • Thanks! I forgot to mention that in the video! I appreciate you watching and posting!

  • I've had a surge for over a year now and I have two things to offer. One is, the spring for the scissors broke. it just popped one day i guess to fatigue. I didn't really use them that much. but it's not really a big deal. And two, the large bit changer spring fatigued as I used it and eventually the bit just fell out and I lost it. I still have the small. Other than that it's alright. I don't think I would buy another one. but now it's my real true abuse multi for camping.

  • Thanks for sharing your experience with the Surge. Sounds like you have used it quite a bit. If you did buy another tool, would it be another model leatherman or another brand altogether?

  • i've had gerber and leatherman multis. I have broke them all. haha I honestly don't think i've been that hard on them. i try to be careful. But I'm curious about the SOG multis. I think i am going to order one of them sometime. I still use my Surge even though it's missing some pieces but I want to try a SOG next. I just haven't brought myself to by another multi yet.

  • hey dude where did you pick this one up? how come it was that cheap?? i want one!

  • This one came from Wal-Mart when they had a huge clearance on their knives. It was just luck that I got it at the right time.

  • Thanks, I was originally shopping for the WAVE. I just got a deal too good to pass up. I'm a collector, so I may get a wave at some point too. I agree with you on the exchanger. I have done a single exchange yet, because I have not needed the file so far. I would like it to be attached already, but I guess that would add even more weight and bulk to the tool. Thanks for watching and for the great rating!

  • The surge review was awesome. I bought my surge at wal-mart for 48 dollars as opposed to 74 dollars at gander mountain sporting goods. I like the surges weight, size and tools offered. I don't find it heavy at all and always wear it on my side. If i need a tool its there. One of my best investments.

    great job

  • Thank You! I too have found that for me personally, the weight or size of the SURGE is not a big deal. I guess everyone is different, but I enjoy and feel safer working with a full size tool. It fits my hand better and therefor, I feel I have a better and more secure grip on it. Thank you for watching and commenting!

  • Does your Surge's pliers stick when closed? On mine, the wire cutters are very tight to each other, and the pliers almost "lock" closed every time. Is that normal? My Wave doesn't have that problem.

  • Hmm, Mine do not really do this, they are easy to use. I wonder if you could lubricate them at the joint and work them a bit to loosen them up??? Just an idea, let me know if this helps.

  • hey thanks. I actually sent mine back. It was defective. My new one is still being shipped.

  • look the surge in NOWHERE near $70.00- $100.00. if i could sudgest a knife to you it would be either the squirt p4 or the wave or the cherge tti. that knife is crazy heavy. even for a edc.

  • Good walkthrough of the tool packrat! Ive been considering getting a surge to throw in my backpack.

Ive heard that alot of the Surge's have rattling issues, not all but some. Its nothing that has an impact on its perfomance its just annoying. Does your surge rattle or feel loose in any way?

  • I have also heard other people say this as well but that is not my experience with this tool. Mine does not rattle and feels very secure and well put together. If I find any problems like this or any others, I will definitely post an update but so far, I have had no problems of any kind with this. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • That' sad! I would hate to know I had lost $100 tool! I guess you can look at it as you probably made some other person's day, whoever may find it. Mine came from Wal-Mart. They recently changed over their knife display and stopped carrying this model. Therefor, they liquidated them. Take Care.

  • I paid almost 100 dollars for my surge and loved it to pieces... I lost it in the woods somewhere and you know the end of that story. I would like to get another one but I'm afraid to lose it again since I use it so damn much. Where did you find it for 40 dollars? I would have bought two!

  • Excellent Review, I'm of down my local store to check them out, thank you.

  • Thanks for watching, and good luck. All the Leatherman tools I have looked at were great quality, so you can't lose!

  • To be honest, I looked at the WAVE, and it is the standard that all others are measured by. If I would have found it for around the same price I got this SURGE, I probably would have bought it instead. I do however like my large scissors:) Thanks for commenting!

  • the surge is great its the one I use, but I carry the skeletool for my edc.

  • I am sure that skeletool is much more comfortable to carry on you than the Surge! I have been carrying mine in my daypack (EDC bag) so far. It doesn't seem to bother me being a bit heaver and larger in there. On my belt though, I might not enjoy it as much. Thanks for watching!

  • Nice leatherman, I have the leatherman blast.

  • Also a good tool, probably the size and weight of yours is better for daily carry than mine is.

  • thank for the review..:)

  • Sure, I am happy to have the opportunity to share this with you! Thanks for all your support.

  • Great Video Review. I have the Wave as an EDC and after this I will be getting the surge for my pack.

  • You will be very satisfied I think. Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks for watching Nightblade!

  • Great review. I have been carrying my Wave for years. You might want to look into the Eagle Industries folding knife sheath if you plan to carry on your belt. That sheath allows you to carry horizontally and makes sense with a multitool of this size.

  • Thanks! I will look into it, I like the sheath that comes with it but horizontal carry does make more sense. Is it nylon or leather or something else?

  • I have the Leatherman Blast use it everyday, One thing i found is on the sheath where the side elastic is the elastic on both sides open so i put my fire steel in there and use the back of my saw blade to strike throws a lot of sparks.

  • Good idea! Thanks for sharing.

  • i have that one, and i really like it, good to have when i working :) 5/5

  • It is definitely made to work! Thanks for the great rating!
