It's been faintly hinted that Sly faked the amnesia so he could get Carmelita and himself out of the cave before it crashed down on them and Dr. M. So maybe he dropped it off at the entrance of the vault with it open, you know?

My idea for Sly 4 is that Dr.M survived the collapsed on the cooper vault and he goes into the future with the cooper gang and he tells Sly that he was the one who created Clockwerk. Now that will be awesome!
