Does anyone else think they seem to look an awful lot like the Power Rangers. It's like when making the team, they followed the same formula: "Hmm, we need a black guy, an Asian girl, a white girl, the leader has to be a white guy." Although Captain Planet was a little more diverse than the original (American) Power Rangers. Everyone in CP was from a different continent (the white girl was Eastern European, and the 3rd guy was Latino instead of white).

In episode 1, the Heart ring allow Ma-ti to read thoughts and feeling of humans as well, or anything sentient. Gaia herself said the ring was the most powerful of them all.
For some reason people never understand the power of communication. All societies are possible precisely because there's communication. Ma-Ti's ring is the bridge to all empathy and social gaps, how could it not be powerful?

MY main problem is that it's not badass enough. You can't save the planet from supervillains without being a badass or one of those cartoon babies that hits all the right switches as they wander aimlessly around the lair.
According to some cultures, Heart/Soul/Life (as in self awareness, conscious, and/or empathy) IS the fifth element, represents the existence of sentient beings and identity amongst natural phenomenons.
Ma-Ti's power CAN be very destructive, if that's your definition of badass. He can destroy a country by summoning animals/locusts to eat away all food sources, use telepathy to steal top secrets, or motivate an otherwise scattered group of criminals/heroes to work together. Hell, if he wants to kill someone, all he has to do is hint the person's dog to go for the throat. Ask a rat to chew away some wires at night and you'll wake up in heaven, charred.

However, if you've watched the show then you'd know that the rings are fully capable of doing what I mentioned. I'm sure you know very well that a forest/building fire is often caused by a spark... and it only take a bowl of liquid to drown a person? It's not that Planeteers can't, is that they wouldn't. Magnitude of power is hardly the limitation of what one could do, it's HOW.
As I made abundantly clear before, I am well aware of the show being an educational program. I was merely pointing out the potential power and danger inherited in the power of those rings. I appreciate that the producers didn't expand on these possibilities. Most people don't seem to comprehend the potential of Ma-Ti's ring, so I made it clear.

The result as you pointed out can vary depends on the target. There's more to telepathy than domination like Professor X can. He can control animals and sense sentient intent, both he did in the show and both are examples of telepathy/empathy.
@teslagod2003 With that said, Ma-ti could certainly motive people to do things if he allow the emotions to flow (motivate, not control). He had used animals to defend himself before also. Nothing I mentioned goes beyond what he had demonstrated in the show. Again, the examples I mentioned are based on what we see in the show under the restriction of it being an educational program that could be expanded. If Fire ring can burn a hole in the ground, it can certainly burn another person's eye out.
@teslagod2003 I think Ma-ti not using his power on villains serves two folds: 1) The show is about realistically saving the environment through 'actions', and 2) No point having the show if Ma-ti can influence villains. However, in the show we saw many examples of how he had read/send thoughts/feelings, influencing animals, which would all accomplish the deeds I listed in earlier posts.

Does anyone else think they seem to look an awful lot like the Power Rangers. It's like when making the team, they followed the same formula: "Hmm, we need a black guy, an Asian girl, a white girl, the leader has to be a white guy." Although Captain Planet was a little more diverse than the original (American) Power Rangers. Everyone in CP was from a different continent (the white girl was Eastern European, and the 3rd guy was Latino instead of white).

this is kind of funny but ma-ti's power really was telepathy. Probably not as powerful as Prof. Xavier's telepathy but that's a pretty cool power. Although I wonder why replace heart with fire. Why not use lightning?

In episode 1, the Heart ring allow Ma-ti to read thoughts and feeling of humans as well, or anything sentient. Gaia herself said the ring was the most powerful of them all.
For some reason people never understand the power of communication. All societies are possible precisely because there's communication. Ma-Ti's ring is the bridge to all empathy and social gaps, how could it not be powerful?

MY main problem is that it's not badass enough. You can't save the planet from supervillains without being a badass or one of those cartoon babies that hits all the right switches as they wander aimlessly around the lair.

Ma-Ti's power CAN be very destructive, if that's your definition of badass. He can destroy a country by summoning animals/locusts to eat away all food sources, use telepathy to steal top secrets, or motivate an otherwise scattered group of criminals/heroes to work together. Hell, if he wants to kill someone, all he has to do is hint the person's dog to go for the throat. Ask a rat to chew away some wires at night and you'll wake up in heaven, charred.

@Cyberium uhm,their power doesnt have huge potential,it's just a fraction of what captain planet can do,and their powers isnt meant for destruction,but if you have watched the part where zarm gave them metalic gloves that has far more potential,power and destruction.if their powers are really as strong as you said,they wont need captain planet.their rings has very limited capabilities,meant to help and aid those are in need,like a first aid or a nurse abilities...

@teslagod2003 I'm well aware that their rings are not meant to be used for destruction, even if the show allows it. However, if you've watched the show then you'd know that the rings are fully capable of doing what I mentioned. I'm sure you know very well that a forest/building fire is often caused by a spark... and it only take a bowl of liquid to drown a person? It's not that Planeteers can't, is that they wouldn't. Magnitude of power is hardly the limitation of what one could do, it's HOW.

As I made abundantly clear before, I am well aware of the show being an educational program. I was merely pointing out the potential power and danger inherited in the power of those rings. I appreciate that the producers didn't expand on these possibilities. Most people don't seem to comprehend the potential of Ma-Ti's ring, so I made it clear.

@teslagod2003 Power of feeling and sharing emotions is that of an Empath, which is also a form of telepathy. Which is why it doesn't work on machine as you put it, but certainly not as useless as many had claimed.

@teslagod2003 I don't believe I ever said Ma-ti can mind-control people. I did point out that he could influence people's feelings via sharing emotions. The result as you pointed out can vary depends on the target. There's more to telepathy than domination like Professor X can. He can control animals and sense sentient intent, both he did in the show and both are examples of telepathy/empathy.

@teslagod2003 With that said, Ma-ti could certainly motive people to do things if he allow the emotions to flow (motivate, not control). He had used animals to defend himself before also. Nothing I mentioned goes beyond what he had demonstrated in the show. Again, the examples I mentioned are based on what we see in the show under the restriction of it being an educational program that could be expanded. If Fire ring can burn a hole in the ground, it can certainly burn another person's eye out.

@teslagod2003 I think Ma-ti not using his power on villains serves two folds: 1) The show is about realistically saving the environment through 'actions', and 2) No point having the show if Ma-ti can influence villains. However, in the show we saw many examples of how he had read/send thoughts/feelings, influencing animals, which would all accomplish the deeds I listed in earlier posts.

Heart sucked. No matter how useful you say it is, it sucked. "It's like Mind Control"! Well he certainly never used it as such. "He can talk to animals!" So can the Dog Whisperer. "But it's the embodiment of compassion! Without it, C.Planet would be a monster!" So it's a chick flick in a ring? Awesome. Even if heart were all these things, Mai-Tai certainly knew how to make it suck. And don't give me that "it's needed to summon Captain" crap. All that means is that it's oblagitory, not awesome.
